I transformed my disgusting council house kitchen with cupboard paint & stick-on tiles – now it’s my favourite room
A SAVVY mum has impressed interior-lovers online with the bargain DIY hacks she used to totally transform her kitchen.
Evie Brooks documented the incredible low-cost changes that took her kitchen from ‘disgusting’ to ‘delicious’ – although she admits she made ‘one big mistake’.

Posting from her TikTok account (@evie_brooks), she titled her clip: ‘council house kitchen renovation.’
The first image shows the kitchen pre-makeover, a nice open space which Evie says is ‘not too bad’.
However she mentions the lack of white goods and appliances – with only a fridge she’d managed to nab from Facebook Marketplace.
Thanks to generosity from friends and family, she quickly managed to get this sorted – receiving a washing machine from her Nan and a coffee machine from her friends.
And after struggling with the bargain Marketplace fridge, another relative even sent her with a swish new replacement.
Next, Evie tackled the dated magnolia walls by painting them in a chic neutral colour, complimented by gorgeous floating shelves.
However there was one flaw in her plan – she’d also taken to her cupboards and cabinets with paint, which she later found out is a no-no for council homes.
“Apparently you’re not supposed to paint council house kitchen cabinets,” she wrote, “no, I didn’t know this till after I started, but I’d gone too far to stop so [I’m] just going to have to cross that bridge when we come to it.”
Although Evie had broken some rules in the process of painting her cabinets, they fitted into the kitchen space beautifully and modernised the units without having to fork out for a full refit.
She’d also set up a fancy coffee area in one corner of her worktops, complete with professional-looking hanging cups.
And the walls above her counter tops were decorated with custom tile stickers, from a brand called Tile Skinz.
And after being gifted nearly all of her appliances, Evie had some cash leftover to purchase her very own dishwasher, which was bound to help the busy mum run her household.
Adding a few potted plants and incense sticks as finishing touches, Evie’s kitchen was complete – taking her seven months in total to renovate.
How to do your council house up on the cheap
- Take inspiration from pricier shops and head to B&M, Home Bargains for interior decorations.
- Head to YouTube for easy to follow tutorials on how to decorate rather than paying for professionals.
- For a quick glow-up for your floors or anywhere with tiles, opt for stick-on vinyl to save on costs.
- A lick of paint does wonders to make a room feel brand-new.
- Switch out kitchen cupboard knobs for modern ones instead of buying brand-new cupboards.
The lengthy process was well worth it, as Evie said the kitchen was now her favourite room in the house and she plans to continue upgrading her white goods when she gets the chance.
Viewers in the comments praised her for her incredible DIY transformation.
“Love it. Who’ve [Sic] create such a gorgeous space. You go girl.”
“Well done lady, good end result, a credit to you.”
“I think you’ve done an amazing job, well done.”
People are only just realising what the circle and dot symbol means on their laundry labels – so can you figure it out?
HAVE you ever looked at a laundry label and were utterly bemused by what the symbols all mean?
While some of them are pretty self-explanatory – such as the temperature the clothing should be washed at – there are others that are more confusing.
![Laundry label symbols and duvet information.](https://www.thesun.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/078b780b-06b1-4a49-b0b2-3acbf827d9bd.jpg?strip=all&w=576)

And one woman admitted she’d been left stunned after discovering the meaning of one of the images – a square with a dot in the middle of it.
Mum-of-three Holly took to TikTok to share her revelation, as she showed the laundry label on her duvet.
She zoomed in on the symbols, before using her iPhone to look up the ‘laundry care’ pictures.
And as she did so, it was revealed that the image actually indicates the maximum temperature that an item can be tumble dried at.
“Please tell me I’m not the only one who DID NOT know this hack?” Holly wrote over the top of the TikTok video.
“Just casually asking in the group chat if I can tumble dry something and they teach me this little hack!” she captioned the clip.
“Have I been living under a rock??”
Lots of people are trying to limit the use of their tumble dryers due to the cost of living crisis.
And another assumption is that the appliances aren’t eco friendly.
But an expert from AO.com has explained that it’s not always the case.
“Older models of tumble dryers were indeed energy guzzlers yet this myth that tumble dryers can’t be energy-efficient has been blown out of the water in recent years,” Gwilym Snook, appliance expert at AO.com, said.
“Enter the heat pump tumble dryer, a specially designed appliance that recycles warm air to dry your clothes at a much cheaper rate than their older counterparts.”
While it will cost around 63p on average to run the tumble dryer for one cycle, the fee can be reduced further if you dry your clothes “between 10pm and 8am during off-peak electricity hours”.

Shocking images show the jet that plunged into Potomac River split in two.
Horror CCTV from the Kennedy Center showed the moment the aircraft burst into flames.
All 64 people onboard – 60 passengers and four crew – are feared dead.
A distressed husband, whose 26-year-old wife was on the plane said his last contact with his wife was just a few minutes before the crash.
Hamaad Raza told WUSA from near Reagan National Airport: “She texted me that they were landing in 20 minutes.”
He then showed undelivered messages on his phone saying “That’s when I realized something was up.”
He added: “I’m just praying that someone is pulling her out of the river right now. That’s all I can pray for.”
He said his wife had gone to Wichita for work but admitted she never felt comfortable flying.
The man alongside another family member are desperately waiting for updates at Terminal 2 at Reagan Airport.
The airport is set to remain closed until at least 11am.
The tragedy happened on Wednesday night when American Eagle Flight 5342 from Kansas was approaching Runway 33 at Ronald Reagan International Airport when it crashed with a US Army Black Hawk helicopter.
Horror CCTV from the Kennedy Center showed the moment the aircraft burst into flames after crashing in the air.
Officials said there are “many, many, many” people dead, but have not confirmed the tragic toll.
A law enforcement source told CBS that at least 19 bodies have been pulled from the river so far.
It comes as…
- Trump says crash ‘should have been prevented’
- All 64 on board feared dead on plane
- CCTV reveals moment of crash
- Chilling audio reveals final moments of plane
- World champion figure skaters ‘were on board’
- Husband reveals wife’s final text from doomed jet
- Rescue efforts hampered by freezing & dark conditions
Emergency services are on the scene frantically scouring for survivors in the freezing waters.
The airport’s fire chief saying the operation will last “many hours”.
Chilling audio from air traffic control has revealed the final communications between the aircraft and air traffic control.
Flight tracking data appears to show the plane was at an approximate altitude of 300ft when it crashed.
Less than 30 seconds before the crash, one controller asked the helicopter if it could see the plane.
The controller made another call to the chopper just moments later, saying: “PAT 25 pass behind the CRJ.”
But seconds later, the plane and helicopter crashed.
The doomed plane was packed with figure skaters including former champion figure skaters Yevgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov.
How common are domestic flights in the US?
by Georgie English, Foreign News Reporter
EVERY single day the Federal Aviation Administration oversees 45,000 flights with almost three million passengers on board
This covers a huge 29 million square miles of airspace from all over the US.
At peak times there can even be up to 5,400 aircraft in the sky at any moment – creating a mammoth task for aviation experts and air traffic controllers to maintain safety amongst all of them.
This means that any wrong call or misstep from either flight crew or controllers can result in a fatal tragedy.
A shortage of air traffic controllers in the past has caused delayed flights and raised a number of safety concerns.
Washington DC’s airspace in particular is extremely busy at peak times.
There have been several near-miss incidents at Reagan National Airport in recent years including a near-collision in May 2024 between an American Airlines jet and a small plane.
A similar catastrophe almost occurred a month earlier between a Southwest and JetBlue flight.
Reagan National also features a much shorter runway than many others with over 90 per cent of outgoing and in-going flights using the main one.
This makes it the busiest single runway in the US with over 800 takeoffs and landings each day – or one every minute for much of the day.
USA Figure Skating said several members of its skating community were also on board.
It said that the athletes, coaches and relatives were travelling back home from a development camp held in Wichita, Kansas.
It said: “We are devastated by this unspeakable tragedy and hold the victims’ families closely in our hearts.
“We will continue to monitor the situation and will release more information as it becomes available.”
The skaters were a part of the National Development Team and had competed at the US Figure Skating Championships that was held between January 20 to 26 in Wichita, Kansas.
Meanwhile President Trump has questioned how the smash happened on a “clear night”.
He wrote on Truth Social: “The airplane was on a perfect and routine line of approach to the airport.
“The helicopter was going straight at the airplane for an extended period of time.
“It is a CLEAR NIGHT, the lights on the plane were blazing, why didn’t the helicopter go up or down, or turn.
“Why didn’t the control tower tell the helicopter what to do instead of asking if they saw the plane.
“This is a bad situation that looks like it should have been prevented. NOT GOOD!!!”

‘This is wonderful’, people cry as cat left ‘unconscious’ by horror fire saved by new on-trial device & ‘heroes’ praised
DUBLIN firefighters have been deemed as heroes after rescuing a cat from a blaze that posed severe danger.
Firefighters from Dolphins Barn in Dublin were called out following reports of a house fire in Ballyfermot.
While dealing with the blaze, firefighters were alerted to a cat who needed to be rescued.
The cat was located by a BA crew, but was unconscious once it was found.
One firefighter placed a pet oxygen mask on the cat, whose name is Biscuit, in an effort to bring the tiny animal back to consciousness.
After only 10 minutes, Biscuit was right as rain and back snuggling into its owner.
Dublin Fire Brigade said: “Firefighters from Dolphins Barn rescued Biscuit from a house fire in Ballyfermot yesterday evening.
“The cat was located by a BA crew and was unconscious.
“Firefighter “Paw”amedic Carrick placed a pet oxygen mask on Biscuit and after 10 minutes, Biscuit was snuggling into it’s owner.”
They added that a dog and a budgie were also rescued in the fire but they didn’t require the need of extra oxygen.
They said: “A budgie and dog were also taken to safety but didn’t require oxygen therapy.”
Many took to the comments of the social media post to praise the “heroes” for their lifesaving work.
One person wrote: “Well done all. You’re an amazing bunch and I love this new initiative.
“Animals can be a great support to people who’ve gone through a devastating event such as losing their home to fire.”
Another said: “Thank you for saving Biscuit and the other animals! Firefighters are heroes.”
A third added: “This is wonderful! Thank you.”
