Cork GAA suffer late blow ahead of mouth-watering clash against Limerick as key star handed two-match suspension
DECLAN DALTON will miss Cork’s hurling league clash against Limerick after being handed a two-match suspension.
Dalton was shown a red card during the Rebels’ Division 1A opener against Wexford last weekend.

It came following an altercation with Rory O’Connor, with both players sent off and Dalton charged for “striking with the head”.
The Rebels forward appealed the decision to the Central Hearings Committee, which heard the case on Thursday.
In a statement, the CHC “found the Infraction proven” and handed down a two-match ban.
In addition to the weekend’s game at SuperValu Pairc Ui Chaoimh, he will also be absent for the following fixture against Tipperary.
Dalton has the option of bringing the case to the Central Appeals Committee.
Saturday’s game between Cork and Limerick will be a rematch of last year’s All-Ireland semi-final, which Pat Ryan’s men won.
And while it will draw a bumper crowd to Pairc Ui Chaoimh, those unable to be there in person will have the option of watching it.
On Wednesday afternoon, TG4 confirmed that it will be live streaming the game.
It will be in addition to the Division 1 football league encounter between Donegal vs Dublin, which TG4 will be covering on TV.
A statement said: “TG4 is delighted to confirm live coverage of the highly anticipated Round 2 Allianz Hurling League clash between Cork and Limerick from SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh, Cork.
“The action will be available to viewers across multiple platforms, with TG4’s live coverage beginning on the TG4 Player and TG4 App from 7:25pm on Saturday night, ahead of throw-in at 7:30pm.
“This exciting encounter will showcase two of hurling’s powerhouse counties as they battle it out under the lights in one of the standout fixtures of the Allianz Hurling League.
“For fans unable to tune in live, updates and stand-out scores will be available on @SportTG4 platforms across social media.
“The match will also be available in full on demand on the TG4 Player and App following the broadcast.
“Don’t miss this thrilling showdown – only on TG4.”
TG4 had requested permission from Croke Park to stream the game in the wake of reaction to RTE’s revealing why it would not be televising it.
In the wake of fan backlash against the broadcaster not carrying it, a statement was released claiming that it had wanted to but the counties involved “could not accommodate.”
A post on Twitter read: “RTE sought Cork-Limerick in the Allianz Hurling League as our match selection a number of months ago but the counties could not accommodate.
“RTE subsequently chose Armagh-Tyrone.”
Cork GAA responded to that assertion on Tuesday afternoon.
The county board claimed that they had been asked to hold the game at an earlier time.
However, with it therefore coming into conflict with Ireland vs England in the Six Nations, they decided to retain the original throw-in time.
Their own statement read: “Cork GAA was informed some weeks ago that Cork v Limerick was not to be the chosen game by broadcasters at the appointed time on Saturday, February 1st at 7.30pm.
“We were not in a position to meet a subsequent request to change the game to an earlier time to facilitate the broadcast, as the alternative time clashed directly with the Ireland v England Rugby game and we sought not to deprive our own supporters of seeing both games.
“We remain deeply disappointed that our fixture will not be televised at the appointed time, but look forward to another spectacle with a packed house here at SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Saturday next.”
Heartbroken girlfriend reveals ‘life on hold’ pain after partner, 20, brutally attacked by gang of 5 men in home
THE girlfriend of a young Irishman fighting for his life after a horror attack has told how “life was put on hold”.
Charlie Dooher received a brutal beating when a gang of five hooded men broke into his Donegal home last week.

Charlie and his father were “violently” beaten by the thugs in their Lifford at Coneyburrow Road, close to the border with Co Tyrone, at around 10.30am.
Charlie, aged in his 20s, was airlifted to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast for emergency surgery on a serious head injury.
His father, who is also named Charles and in his 60s, suffered less severe injuries and is getting treated at Letterkenny University Hospital.
Charlie’s girlfriend Charlotte Gallen revealed on social media how the couple’s life has been put on hold after the masked men “violently beat”, leaving him in serious condition after “shattering his skull”.
She said: “One week since life was put on hold.
“A week of sitting and talking by your bed side but you’re not talking back.
“Thank you everyone for your prayers and kind messages, keep the prayers coming they’re needed now more than ever.”
A full garda investigation has been launched into the brutal attack and cops are appealing to the public for information.
Two men, who were arrested by PSNI officers in Derry in connection to the incident, were released on bail.
Charlotte continued: “This time last year we were living in Australia sitting by the beach and today I sit by his bed side in intensive care praying for some sort of miracle to have the love of my life back with us in full health.
“Charlie has never failed to take my worries away and always fills me with a sense of peace and serenity with his kindness and big heart.
“If he could see me now he would be telling me to take a deep breath and have hope.
“His presence brought safety and I wish I could have given him that same protection from some of the evil people in this world.”
Naomh Padraig Leifear GAA are holding a 7-a-side fundraiser for the family on Sunday, February 16.
‘VITAL MEMBER’
Organisers said: “Charles is a vital member of our club and we hope he makes a full and speedy recovery and back home with his family doing what he loves best.
“Our 7-a-side (three subs) will consist of three players that are currently playing GAA for a club.
“The other members of your team have to be past players or your mother, father, granny, or granda.
“It’s a day of fun and to bring our community together for a great cause.
“All money raised will help Charles’s family with travelling up and down to Belfast.”

“Sam then came out with a knife. It was shocking. He and Zara had heard a commotion and mistook it for burglars.”
Sources said I’m A Celeb winner Sam grabbed a small knife used from an earlier meal and did not usually keep any blades in his bedroom.
The segment was filmed before Sam and Zara, 28, split in December.
The Big Show aired on January 18 with the knife drama edited out.
Instead BBC screened a version where Sam lay in bed while Zara answered the door.

He added, joking: “It’s not in the show and I probably shouldn’t be saying it but — you know, he had a weapon — I could have died that night at the hands of Sam Thompson.”
Sam has said of the segment: “Best experience ever mate, the coolest thing ever.”

‘Awful’ sudden deaths of two elderly sisters found in Belfast house being probed as community ‘very sad’ after discovery
TWO elderly sisters have been found dead in a Belfast house today.
Police discovered the bodies of the two women at a property in the Finaghy Road area of south Belfast.
Locals in the area have been left “very sad” by the shock discovery this morning.
Emergency services and PSNI officers rushed to the house at about 1.30pm after the alarm was raised.
A PSNI spokesperson said: “Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the sudden deaths of two people at a residential property in the Finaghy area of south Belfast.
“The deaths were discovered this morning, Friday 31 January.
“At this stage of our enquiries, it is not believed that the deaths are suspicious.”
Neighbours told The Belfast Telegraph how the community was left in shock.
One resident recalled how he assisted one of the sisters getting to the door.
He said: “The woman we helped was caring for her sister, who I think was aged in her 90s, but she probably needed care herself. It’s awful.”
He added: “Everyone gets on and you always have someone to take the bins in for you if you’re ever away. This is very sad.”
Another neighbour told how there have been “a lot of deaths” in the area.
He said: “One man died shortly before Christmas, and another man right beside him died on the same morning I think.
“They were both very elderly, but it’s still so sad.
“Everyone gets on well around here, there’s never any trouble.”
Separately, an elderly man was shot five times by a group of masked men who broke into his home last night.
APPEAL
Detectives are urging people to come forward with information following reports of a shooting in the Coleraine area of Derry.
Reports were made shortly after 7.50pm that a number of masked men had broken into the home of a man in his 70s.

ARM AND LEG WOUNDS
He has since been taken to hospital for treatment.
It was discovered there that he had been shot five times in the arm and legs.
The man also sustained injuries to his head and torso.
PSNI officers confirmed that his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Trainers need to move on from disruptor Peter Savill after failed TV interview boycott
RACING’S s*** stirrer-in-chief has been at it again.
The question is, why do so many trainers still listen to the one-time BHA (or BHB, as it was back in the day) chief Peter Savill?
![Head and shoulders portrait of horse trainer Dan Skelton.](https://www.thesun.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/crop-21397941.jpg?strip=all&w=960)
His track record is littered with high-profile duds, and this week’s failed media boycott is one of the most embarrassing yet.
To recap, news broke last weekend that 170 trainers, members of Savill’s new ‘pressure group’ the Professional Racing Association (PRA), were going to refuse to take TV interviews, at Sandown and for the foreseeable, unless racecourses coughed up half a million quid.
When the rancid rebellion came to light, it was not clear what Savill and his pals actually wanted to do with the money.
I think it’s a short price some of the supposed 170 PRA members — only a handful of whom have actually been identified — thought they’d end up making some cash on the side.

For all the optics of Nick Luck slipping Hendo a score after a post-race chinwag would in truth be quite amusing, it has since been clarified the cash would have gone towards paying for the PRA’s admin costs, as well as a trainer’s benevolent fund.
Either way, it was the sort of PR disaster that would have made even Liz Truss wince and the trainers who backed it came across as entitled and out of touch.
At Cheltenham last Saturday trainers donned poker faces when quizzed on their views, though Alan King let slip it would ‘rev the sport up a bit’ before Dan Skelton came out of the trenches with all guns blazing saying it was a marvellous idea.
But it was condemned by pretty much every corner of the industry and they were quickly forced into a full retreat, with the cash-for-questions rebellion ending up like a terrible remix of Craig David’s 7 Days.
Sing it with me: “Demanded 500,000 smackers on Friday, doubled down on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, U-turned on Tuesday.”
Clearly, the real aim of the PRA is to put pressure on racecourses, who rake it in through media rights payments, to be more transparent and reinvest a fair share of their revenue into prize-money.
Nobody can quibble with that, but in reality you could threaten the most tight-fisted racecourse execs with a stint in Guantanamo Bay and they still wouldn’t cough up. This tinpot uprising was doomed to fail.
And it is quite rich of Savill to be leading this charge considering that, as pointed out on the AK Bets podcast this week, he had his foot in a very different camp when at the BHB helm.
At a BHB AGM in 2004 he said regarding prize-money: “Racecourses in future will be free to decide how much of their own money they want to contribute to the prize fund rather than being mandated to contribute a certain amount to it.”
Let’s not forget, around the same time he nearly destroyed racing’s relationship with the press when trying to charge newspapers £340,000 a year to print racecards, despite the fact it was free promotion for the sport.
Of course, he backed down when editors told him to eff off.
And after a period in the wilderness, he emerged a few years ago to foist the failed ‘premierisation’ project on the BHA. Another smashing idea, big Pete.
This sport never ceases to amaze in finding new ways to load a double barrel shotgun and blow its own feet to smithereens.
The only way we are ever going to get anywhere is through serious, strong leadership (easier said than done in this game, admittedly) and for all racing’s factions to compromise and find common ground, which shouldn’t be difficult.
I’m reliably informed the way the boycott fiasco was handled went down like a lead balloon with plenty of PRA members, and Skelton won’t have been pleased about the U-turn just a few days are sticking his head above the parapet.
A handful of high-profile members are already said to have quit, including Paul Nicholls, and with Savill funding it with his own cash, I can’t imagine the PRA will be ruffling feathers for much longer.
Savill has shown over the years he has done more harm than good, so it’s time for besotted trainers to give their master the Spanish archer so we can all move on with our lives.
