PART of London’s South Bank will be transformed in the next few years thanks to a huge new development taking place in the city.
Nicknamed ‘The Slab’, the site previously housed the old headquarters of ITV, but has been vacant since 2018.
Planning permission for the redevelopment of 72 Upper Ground was granted back in December.
Over the next four years, developers Mitsubishi Estate plan to transform the site into a mixed-use space, as reported by City AM.
Estimated to cost as much as £400million, images of the development show outdoor green spaces and walkways.
Another image features riverside restaurants and bars overlooking the Thames, with a rooftop restaurant also listed under the plans.
When the 2.5 acre site opens in 2029, it will be home to cafes, cultural venues and green spaces.
Other features are set to include biodiverse roofs for wildlife and outdoor terraces.
Further details, including the brands of restaurants and the type of cultural venues, have yet to be revealed.
Shinichi Kagitomi, Chief Executive of Mitsubishi Estate London, described the redevelopment as a “significant positive contribution” to London’s Southbank.
Demolition work is currently underway, after developers won a court battle last year.
Until the site opens, there are plenty of attractions to keep visitors entertained in London’s South Bank.
One of the South Bank’s most well-known attractions is the London Eye.
There’s also the Southbank Centre, which is home to the Royal Festival Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, and the Hayward Gallery.
Visitors who want to take in a show should head to either Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre or the National Theatre.
Other attractions include Skateboarding at the Undercroft, Leake Street Arches and the BFI Southbank.
Several other huge developments are also taking place across the English capital, including a huge £125million redevelopment taking place in Ealing.
The Ealing development will include a leisure centre with a 50 metre Olympic swimming pool.
Slated to open in 2027, the new London attraction will include a waterpark with slides and a lazy river.
There will also be a soft play zone, a gym, a creche for kids, and a cafe.
Outside attractions will include a skate park and a playground.
Elsewhere in London, a neighbourhood is getting a huge £10billion renovation.
The huge redevelopment includes a large kids’ playground and climbing attraction, as well as gardens, restaurants, and ‘cultural venues’.
The Sun’s Head of Travel (Digital) Caroline McGuire has named some of her favourites and why.
LONDON is chock full of fantastic pubs.
Whether you’re looking for an old man’s boozer, a gastro pub or a cosy pitstop with a roaring fire, there is the perfect pub for everyone in the capital.
My top tip? Try to avoid the ones in the tourist spots of Covent Garden, Leicester Square, and so on, unless you’ve got a recommendation. No self-respecting Londoner would be seen dead in them.
Here is a selection of our favourite London pubs, from some of the heaviest drinkers we know…

The UK’s busiest train station is also undergoing a multi-billion development.
And here’s the first look at the London skyscraper set to be one of the tallest in Europe.
A BULGARIAN man has admitted his role in smuggling over €20million worth of cocaine to Ireland from Brazil, a court heard today.
Nikola Penchev, 34, pleaded guilty before Limerick Circuit Criminal Court to one count of possession of cocaine in excess of €13,000 for sale or supply, contrary to Section 15 (A) of the Misuse of Drugs Act.
Penchev, with an address at Velicki, Preslav, Bulgaria, spoke only to confer his “guilty” plea during the brief court hearing, Thursday.
The offence carries a mandatory prescriptive minimum ten-year jail sentence unless a court finds extenuating exceptional circumstances that would allow a reduced term.
The €21.6million total cocaine haul was smuggled on board the MV Verila cargo ship, which travelled from Brazil to Canada and onto Foynes Port, Co Limerick, bringing with it a legal consignment of sugar and grain.
The drugs were discovered by Revenue Customs officers who searched the ship after it had docked at Foynes Port, on December 19, 2023.
The drugs were to be dropped overboard and collected for transportation across Ireland and the rest of Europe, but this did not happen.
After pleading guilty, Penchev was remanded in continuing custody for sentence on April 9.
A co-accused man, Kamen Petkov, also from Bulgaria, who pleaded guilty to the same offence was jailed for ten years last December.
Judge Colin Daly told Petkov’s sentencing hearing that Petkov had been in control of “such a large quantity of drugs that it was impossible not to conclude that thousands of lives would have been affected by such a volume of drugs”.
Petkov, 36, told Gardai, following his arrest, that he had agreed to smuggle the drugs for a €150,000 fee, as he had massive gambling debts.
Judge Daly said Petkov “facilitated organised crime internationally for a significant reward”.
Detective Garda Adrian Cahill, Limerick Divisional Drugs Unit, told the sentencing hearing that the cocaine found on board the vessel was “pure cocaine, with a potential value of five times that amount on the street” estimated at €105million.
A total of 12 bales of cocaine were discovered hidden in an air-conditioning room on the bulk vessel.
The Maltese registered vessel sailed on to Santos Port, Brazil, and Hamilton Port, Canada, before reaching Foynes.
