I’m a gardening pro – my lazy ‘no work’ £3.99 potato hack is a game changer – & will feed you all year round

FEBRUARY is a good month to start thinking about potatoes – and how you’re going to plant them.

Gone are the days when the only choice was to plonk them in the ground, earth them up and let them take over half your outside space.

You can’t beat recently forked potatoes straight to the hob.[/caption]

Now there’s all sorts of ways of growing the spuds you like – whether you garden on a balcony, pots on the patio, down your allotment or even on your windowsill.

But first, if you can chit your potatoes – then you’ve got a good head start. You can do that any time from now.

Chances are they’ll be more robust against disease and you’ll get a larger harvest that can be planted earlier and get a crop sooner.

Choosing your potatoes depends on what you want.

First earlies are ready from June to July; second earlies from July to August; early maincrops in August; and late maincrops from September onwards. To eat them all year round – try them all.

TYPES OF POTATOES

The British Garden Centre' have released a handy guide to which spuds are which..

  • First Earlies (e.g., Accord, Arran Pilot, Pentland Javelin, Red Duke of York, Orla, Rocket, and Swift) are typically planted in March and harvested from May to July)
  • Second Earlies (e.g., Charlotte, Estima, Maris Peer, Nadine, Nicola, Ratte, and Saxon) are planted in April and harvested from July to August.
  • Main Crop potatoes (e.g., Desiree, King Edward, Maris Piper, and Picasso) are also planted in April and harvested from July to October.
  • Autumn varieties (e.g., Charlotte, Desiree, Maris Peer, and Nicola) are planted in August and harvested from October to November.

Find out more by visiting British Garden Centres

Find a light room that isn’t too warm  – a windowsill is best if you’ve got space – and place your seed potatoes in an egg box, or seed tray. Then leave.

It’s as simple as that. Once the sprouts get to around 2cm, get them in the soil.

The idea is that you shouldn’t really use the supermarket potatoes that have sprouted because you didn’t cook. them quick enough.

Boffins claim that they wont be resistant to disease. But I’ve managed to get a decent crop from mine – up to you if you want to take the risk.

The traditional method is to plant them in rows or in a trench, and as the foliage grows – gradually ‘earth them up’ – which means mounding up soil around the leaves the more they grow.

It helps against blight and improves drainage.

But nowadays, it’s perfectly acceptable to grow potatoes in sacks, grow bags and buckets.

There’s all sorts of available – but you can use old compost bags and any old buckets – just make sure there’s holes for drainage  – the method is the same.

You could even make it work by getting a £3.99 bag of compost from Homebase and empty it out.

Then use that empty bag to grow them in.

Put a layer of the compost in the bottom – place five or six seed potatoes on the top, then cover with another layer of soil.

Only keep the sides rolled up as far as the top layer of compost.

And as the foliage comes up – you can add more soil – then roll them up as you need to add more soil.

Once the leaves start yellowing, then it’s time to fork them out.

Inside Chloe Ferry’s £50K surgery with bum lift, 3 nose jobs, fillers & fox eye lift as she plans to correct botched ops

OVER the years Chloe Ferry has spent a fortune on cosmetic surgery which includes a bum lift, nose jobs, fillers AND fox eye lift.

The reality TV favourite, 29, has had a string of procedures – totalling around £50K – since she first made her debut on Geordie Shore.

Chloe launched to fame aged just 19 on MTV’s Geordie Shore

As her TV persona grew, so did her love of cosmetic surgery with her admitting she was “addicted” to it in the past.

The Geordie Shore star quickly found herself following in the footsteps of Charlotte Crosby, Holly Hagan and Marnie Simpson’s when it came to plastic surgery.

The fresh faced teenager with long dark hair and natural lips soon evolved into a glamorous pin-up model.

Since then, Chloe has spent around £50K on cosmetic procedures

The reality star often shares surgeries and procedures online in her bid to get an hourglass figure.

However, in a candid new message posted on Instagram this week, Chloe admitted she has been riddled with insecurities that had left her struggling with depression and anxiety.

Here we take a look at the work she’s had done over the years:

Botox and lip filler

Joining Geordie Shore in 2015, when she was just 19 years old, she quickly shared she had started getting Botox

This was just the first of her “tweakments”, which included getting lip filler.

However, she has since had the filler dissolved.

Boob job

Despite once claiming she would never touch her boobs, she went on to have multiple procedures on her chest – which includes two boob jobs.

However in 2023, the star decided to go more au naturale and had her implants removed.

Chloe told followers at the time that the size of her chest had been giving her bad back pain, so she decided to go ahead with the op.

She said: “Hi everyone. So it’s day two of my boob reduction. I feel totally fine and they gave me the option to go back to the villa this morning but I said I’ll stay here one more night.

“Then I’m going to go back to the villa and recover properly there.”

Chloe went on to gush about how smoothly the surgery went, and added: “Honestly can’t believe how quick my recovery has been this time.

“Last time when I had my boobs done it was a lot harder than this time.”

Nose job

Chloe’s surgeries also include a painful nose job.

Before going under the knife for a £4,250 rhinoplasty, Chloe confessed: “I want to get a nose like Charlotte (Crosby), she’s nose goals!

“She looked like a parrot [before her surgery] and now she looks beautiful.”

Liposuction

The star has also had liposuction on her hips and bum to make her “look like a Kardashian”.

However, she showed off nasty bruises on her bum after she recovered from the painful surgery.

Fox eye lift

Chloe followed a trend made popular by Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner when she underwent a fox eye lift — but it left her needing hospital treatment.

Chloe told The Sun last year: “It’s probably one of the biggest mistakes I’ve ever made.

“I really regret it. I’ve had a traumatic seven months and it could’ve been avoided. I’ve been going through hell since I had it done.

“I’ve always had really good skin, I never get spots and now I have this dent on my face. It’s permanent.

“It has actually ruined my life and made me so insecure. I can’t leave the house without make-up.”

Chloe had the two-hour procedure in January 2022.

She said of the eye lift: “I don’t know why I got it done in the first place, because people kept telling me I didn’t need it — it just made me want to get it done more.

“Now I keep thinking, ‘Why have I done this to myself?’ It’s made me so self-conscious, and really affected me mentally. I’ve been botched.”

Chloe is now said to be getting her BBL reversed[/caption]

Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL)

In 2018, Chloe underwent this painful procedure to have a bigger bottom.

However, after seven years of showing off her peachy bum she has decided to get the operation reversed.

This week, The Sun revealed how she is having an operation to change back to her original shape.

Chloe Ferry - Cosmetic Procedure Timeline

As the star announces plans to reverse and correct her surgeries, here's just some of the procedures and cosmetic 'tweaks' she's had done since first appearing in the public eye.

  • Botox (starting in 2015)
  • Eyebrow lift
  • 3x Nose Jobs
  • Lip Fillers
  • Cheek fillers
  • Teeth Veneers
  • Breast implants (and later corrective surgery for scarring)
  • Breast reduction
  • Liposuction on stomach
  • Brazilian Butt Lift

In 2023, she revealed she was getting her lip filler dissolved.
