Liverpool were an inspiration for Brentford in promotion of Keith Andrews from set-piece coach to manager

BRENTFORD feel they are following in the footsteps of Liverpool’s famous boot room with their Keith Andrews gamble.

The Bees have turned to set-piece coach Andrews to succeed Thomas Frank after his impressive seven-year tenure.

Few Premier League clubs would even consider appointing from within nowadays, but Liverpool did so over 39 years.

Bob Paisley, Joe Fagan, Kenny Dalglish and Roy Evans all emerged from the inner sanctum to lead the Reds — and Brentford want to develop a similar reputation.

Ex-Ireland midfielder Andrews, 44, has no managerial experience but has been with the club for 12 months.

His first task is to deal with losing key players, with captain Christian Norgaard set to join Arsenal and top scorer Bryan Mbeumo in Manchester United talks.

While many predict Brentford’s fabled model will collapse under the pressure of a tumultuous summer, those in charge appear relaxed.

Director of football Phil Giles led the process to replace Frank, having promoted him from within to replace Dean Smith in 2018.

He said: “Liverpool used to do it for 30 years when they were the best team around and it worked for them.

“I’m not sure when it fell out of fashion. If it’s good enough for them, it’s good enough for us.

“Thomas has a phrase, ‘If you take no risk, you also take a risk’, which is completely right.

“It’s more risky to go and get a coach we don’t know from a club where the environment may be different.”

Giles all but confirmed Norgaard’s £9.3million move to the Gunners but was more bullish on hitman Mbeumo’s future — challenging Manchester United to meet their demands.

The chief has seen key figures come and go in more than a decade in the role.

Giles added: “A lot of people say it’s more worrying when there’s not interest in your players. It’s good that there’s interest.

“We’re getting a bit ahead of ourselves. We’ve only got a new head coach and a new keeper as it stands.

“It’s not like falling apart . . . There’s interest. Until that happens, it’s actually pretty stable.”

Andrews is just as relaxed as the top brass over departures.

But he said: “Ultimately, I want the best possible players in the building.

“We’ve got phenomenal players in the building that we will continue to improve and develop.”

Both Alex Jones and Roman Kemp have taken a step back from their hosting roles on the show as it takes time off-air.

The One Show will be off-air for a total of four weeks in order to accommodate sporting coverage such as Wimbledon and the Euros.

Alex confirmed they would be off-air as they hosted their last show together on Friday.

Addressing The One Show viewers, she said: “We are taking a bit of a break for the next four weeks and we’ll be back on Monday, 28th July but there’s plenty to enjoy like Wimbledon and the Euros.”

The One Show typically airs all week at 7pm with Alex and Roman often in the hosting seat.

Lauren Laverne, Ronan Keating, Clara Amfo and Alex Scott are also often seen covering hosting duties.

The One Show took a similar four-week break last year to accommodate summer sporting events.

This week, Wimbledon will begin its evening coverage at 7pm on BBC One forcing The One Show to be axed as well as flagship soap EastEnders to be moved to smaller channel, BBC Two.

Despite EastEnders usually airing Monday-Thursday at 7:30pm on the main BBC channel, fans will instead see two episodes broadcast on just Monday and Tuesday on BBC Two.

It will air a back-to-back double bill this evening.

Following tonight’s Walford action, fans will have to go a whole eight days before getting their next fix of Albert Square action.

The soap won’t air again until the 9th July.

Chinese electronics manufacturer Anker has urgently recalled five models of power banks.

Owners of the products have been told to stop using the them “immediately due to the risk of overheating, melting, smoke, or fire.”

“While the likelihood of malfunction is considered minimal, out of an abundance of caution, we have decided to initiate a voluntary global recall of several Anker power bank models,” Anker said.

Earlier this year, Anker recalled another power bank model, the A1263 PowerCore 10000.

The company cited a “potential issue” with lithium ion batteries provided by a supplier.

How To Check If You Have An Affected Power Bank

The five products affected by the new recall are as follows:

  • Anker Power Bank (model A1257 and A1647)
  • Anker MagGo Power Bank (model A1652)
  • Anker Zolo Power Bank (model A1681 and A1689)

You can identify the model you have by looking at the model number on the back or side of the device.

If you have one of the affected devices, immediately stop using it and store it in a safe location.

Anyone affected by the recall can get a free replacement power bank, or a gift card to use on the Anker website.

To claim either, simply fill out the Product Recall Submission Form on the Anker website, alongside a verified product serial number or proof of purchase.

How To Dispose Of Your Powerbank

Once you have received confirmation that your power bank qualifies for a replacement, Anker shared that you must dispose of it at a facility that accepts recalled lithium-ion batteries.

“Do not discard this recalled lithium-ion battery in the trash or general recycling streams (e.g., street-level or curbside recycling bins)”, Anker said.

Your product recall rights

Chief consumer reporter James Flanders reveals all you need to know.

Product recalls are an important means of protecting consumers from dangerous goods.

As a general rule, if a recall involves a branded product, the manufacturer would usually have lead responsibility for the recall action.

But it’s often left up to supermarkets to notify customers when products could put them at risk.

If you are concerned about the safety of a product you own, always check the manufacturer’s website to see if a safety notice has been issued.

When it comes to appliances, rather than just food items, the onus is usually on you – the customer – to register the appliance with the manufacturer as if you don’t there is no way of contacting you to tell you about a fault.

If you become aware that an item you own has been recalled or has any safety noticed issued against it, make sure you follow the instructions given to you by the manufacturer.

They should usually provide you with more information and a contact number on its safety notice.

In some cases, the manufacturer might ask you to return the item for a full refund or arrange for the faulty product to be collected.

You should not be charged for any recall work – such as a repair, replacement or collection of the recalled item

“These drop-off points are not equipped to handle recalled lithium-ion products like power banks.”

Recalled lithium-ion batteries must be handled differently from regular batteries because they pose a higher fire risk.

You can usually take lithium-ion batteries to recycling centres, which have facilities for disposing of electronic waste.

Some large supermarkets also have collection points for lithium-ion batteries and other electricals.

If you have any questions or need further assistance, please contact support@anker.com.

Please include “Anker 321 Power Bank Recall” in the subject line

The company also offers telephone support.

The 7 signs of ‘very aggressive’ cancer after rock star’s cough led to shock diagnosis

ROCK star David Roach has been diagnosed with a “very aggressive” form of cancer after symptoms of a “fever and a cough”.

The musician and his fiancée Jennifer say their world has been “shattered” by the news.

As part of a statement shared in an Instagram caption, Jennifer said: “We’re still struggling to process the news we received on Tuesday.

“After David’s ongoing fever and cough led us to the ER, we got results that have completely shattered our world.

“It’s devastating and life-altering, and we’re trying to navigate through the emotions and uncertainty that come with it.”

A photo accompanying the message shows David in a gown while lying in a hospital bed and hooked up to oxygen.

The band has launched a GoFundMe while also confirming David is “battling aggressive squamous cell carcinoma affecting his head, neck, and throat”.

This would suggest that David has head and neck cancer, of which squamous cell carcinoma is the most common type.

While coughing and fever are not specific symptoms to head and neck cancer, they are among the most common cancer signs.

Head and neck cancers can occur in more than 30 parts of head and neck, including the mouth, throat, nose, sinuses, ears and salivary glands.

They are often referred to as the type of cell they start in.

About nine out of 10 head and neck cancers start in squamous cells – cells that line the surfaces inside the head and neck, such as the mouth, nose and throat.

But many people might be more familiar with squamous cell carcinoma of the skin – one of the most common forms of skin cancer.

Dr Jonathan Kentley, an NHS dermatologist at London’s Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, told Sun Health: “The majority of SCCs occur in the skin and are usually caused by long-term sun exposure, or exposure to HPV in the genital region.

“However, SCC can also develop in other parts of that body that contain squamous cells such as the mouth and throat, lungs and cervix.

“In the mouth, throat, SCC is often caused by smoking or exposure to the HPV [human papillomavirus].”

The main risk factors for head and neck cancer are smoking and alcohol, especially when combined, Macmillan Cancer Support says.

HPV is a group of viruses affecting the skin that don’t cause problems for most people but can develop genital warts or cancer – their link to cervical cancer is well documented.

But certain high-risk strains of HPV can also cause anal, penile, vulval and vaginal cancer, as well as some types of head and neck cancer.

Head and neck cancer is also much more common in men than in women.

In the UK, almost 13,000 cases are diagnosed each year, making it the 8th most common cancer, and there are 4,143 deaths.

Cancer Research UK says that since the early 1990s, head and neck cancer incidence rates have increased by more than a third (35 per cent).

Watch out for these signs and speak to your doctor or dentist if you see them

Rates in females have increased by almost half (47 per cent), and rates in males have increased by almost a quarter (23 per cent).

A report by University of Sheffield scientists in collaboration with the Department of Health and Social Care in 2024 made the same warning, saying that the surge in these diseases was largely driven by an uptick in oropharyngeal cancer.

Figures show there were 3,834 new cases of oropharyngeal cancer in 2019, a 47 per cent increase from 2013.

“There has been an increase in the number of HPV-associated oropharyngeal cancers in the last two decades, particularly in males,” the Sheffield researchers noted.

HPV is passed on through close skin-to-skin contact during sex, as well as vaginal, anal and oral sex, the NHS says.

Ali Khurram, a professor and honorary consultant pathologist at the University of Sheffield, said: “Although head and neck cancer is one of the most common cancers in England with a significantly worse survival compared to other cancers, its awareness among the public, health professionals and funding organisations is poor.”

Symptoms to watch for

The symptoms depend on where the cancer started in the head or neck.

Dr Kentley says: “In non-skin SCC, symptoms can include pain, difficulty swallowing, a lump in the throat or bleeding when coughing. If you experience any of these symptoms it is important to see a doctor.”

Macmillan Cancer Support advises you to speak to your dentist or GP if you have any of the following symptoms:

  1. An ulcer anywhere in the mouth area, including your tongue, lasting for more than three weeks
  2. A red patch (erythroplakia) or red and white patch (erythroleukoplakia) anywhere inside the mouth
  3. A white patch on its own (leukoplakia) anywhere inside the mouth
  4. A lump in the neck that does not go away after two to three weeks
  5. A lump on the lip or anywhere inside the mouth that doesn’t go away
  6. A sore tongue that is not getting better
  7. Throat pain, persistent hoarseness and difficulty swallowing that’s not improving

Macmillan Cancer says certain symptoms will see you referred to a specialist within two weeks, such as a persistent ulcer.

Any of the symptoms can be caused by conditions other than cancer. But it’s important to seek advice about any of them. Cancer is always more easily treatable if it’s spotted early.

Skin cancer

A squamous cell carcinoma is a type of cancer that can occur in a number of parts of the body, including the skin.

Squamous cell carcinoma skin cancer is the second most common type of skin cancer in the UK.

SCC accounts for 23 per cent of all non-melanma skin cancers, which account for 90 per cent of all cancers.

Symptoms of his disease typically start on the skin, however – but can be mistaken for spots, age spots or scabs.

Dr Kentley said: “In the skin, early signs of SCC can be quite subtle such as a scaly bump or a spot that isn’t healing.

“Left unchecked the lesions can grow causing pain and bleeding, and even spread to other parts of your body causing swelling in the lymph nodes (found in the neck, armpits and groin) or even the lung which can cause breathlessness or liver which can cause stomach pain.

“For skin SCC, around 95 per cent of cases can be cured with surgery to remove the lesion, however in five per cent of cases, SCC requires other treatments such as radiotherapy, immunotherapy or chemotherapy.”

What are the symptoms of a squamous cell carcinoma originating from the skin?

Symptoms can include:

  • A firm bump on the skin, called a nodule. The nodule might be the same color as the skin, or it might look different. It can look pink, red, black or brown, depending on skin color.
  • A flat sore with a scaly crust, or a new sore or raised area on an old scar or sore.
  • A rough, scaly patch on the lip that may become an open sore, or a sore or rough patch inside the mouth.
  • A raised patch or wartlike sore on or in the anus or on the genitals.

Mayo Clinic advises people should see a doctor if a sore or scab doesn’t heal in about two months or if a flat patch of scaly skin doesn’t go away

DUBLIN is set for a week of “dull” weather with wind and rain expected to batter the capital into the weekend.

Sunshine is expected to hit today and while temperatures will remain in the low 20s, it will be more humid than warm as wet conditions linger over the city.

Today will start off “dull” with patches of drizzle and mist in 18C temperatures.

As today progresses it will turn brighter as those conditions clear allowing some sunny spells to develop.

Alan O’Reilly of Carlow Weather confirmed cloud would clear from over the east allowing some sunshine to hit Dublin.

He said: “A nice bright start in the West as forecast and cloud in the East and Southeast but it will clear later this afternoon.”

Much of the same tonight with a mix of clear spells and showers.

On Wednesday it will feel “fresher” despite temperatures reaching up to 19C.

Again another day of scattered showers and sunshine, with those showers become isolated by evening.

Wednesday night will see the start of an “unsettled” turn as rain begins to feed in across Ireland from the Atlantic.

It will turn cloudier overnight with temperatures of just 8C to 12C.

However, Dublin is set to miss most of the heavier rain tomorrow night as the west takes the brunt of the showers.

Sunshine will continue to peek through showers on Thursday as cloud clears throughout the day.

It will be mild on Thursday with temperatures much lower during the day at 16C to 20C.

Rain and cloud to make a reappearance on Thursday night with temperatures falling as low as 8C.

WEEKEND FORECAST

And Dublin is set to be caught up in the unsettled conditions expected nation wide over the first weekend of July.

Met Eireann warned for Friday the weather would take a very breezy turn despite being in the depths of summer.

They explained: “Quite windy on Friday with outbreaks of rain and drizzle spreading from the northwest through the day, in fresh to strong southwest winds. Highest temperatures of 14C to 19C.”

And unfortunately Saturday and Sunday is much the same, leading into further unsettled weather next week.

Met Eireann bosses explained: “A dull and damp day with scattered outbreaks of rain and drizzle.

“Highest temperatures of 16C to 21C in moderate west to southwest winds.

“Generally unsettled on Sunday and early next week with rain and showers.”

Europe’s best airline to launch flights from UK airport for the first time

AN airline that was named the best in Europe in this year’s Skytrax Awards has revealed plans to launch flights from a new UK airport.

Turkish Airlines was named Best Airline in Europe in what is dubbed the Oscars of Aviation.

And the airline has since confirmed new flights would launch from London Stansted for the first time.

The flights – which will connect the London airport to Istanbul – will operate 14 times a week.

The launch is due to meet the “higher demand” the airline has seen from their other UK airports.

They already operate from seven airports in the UK and Ireland.

This includes London Heathrow and London Gatwick, as well as Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh and Dublin.

The new flights will launch from London Stansted on March 18, 2026.

Turkish Airline’s general manager for London, Mehmet Gurulkan, said it would “strengthen their commitment to the UK market”.

They added: “This new service increases our total weekly UK – Istanbul frequencies, providing passengers even more choice and greater connectivity to our global network.”

And Stansted Airport’s managing director Gareth Powell said it was a “major milestone” for the airport, which currently operates to 353 destinations.

He explained how the new flights would also mean better connections across other destinations as well.

He added: “Istanbul is a fantastic destination in its own right, but this new service also opens the door to Turkish Airlines’ extensive global network, connecting London Stansted to over 353 destinations, offering passengers and businesses across our region greater choice and easier access to destinations across Asia, Africa, Australia and beyond.”

A number of new routes have already launched at London Stansted in recent months.

Another Turkish carrier, SunExpress, is launching a new route to Kayseri this month.

Transavia launched its first flights from London Stansted back in April, connecting the airport to Rotterdam.

British Airways started a new flight service to Bergerac in France last month.

And Ryanair launched routes to Munster in Germany and Clermont-Ferrand in France, earlier this year from London Stansted.

In the mean time, here is how to do a city break holiday in Istanbul.
