Multi-millionaire founder of iconic corner shop chain with over 1,200 branches in UK dies aged 81 as tributes pour in

TRIBUTES have been paid to the multi-millionaire co-founder of Nisa after the corner shop pioneer sadly died aged 81.

Dudley Ramsden founded D.B Ramsden & Co Ltd in Grimsby over 60 years ago.

In a statement issued by Dee Bee Wholesale, part of the Ramsden Group of Companies, Ramsden was described as a “great friend, father and grandfather.”

It is with “deep sadness” that the group had to announce the loss of the 81-year-old.

They described him as a “pioneering force” with “remarkable influence” on the independent retail industry for decades.

He was “instrumental” in establishing groups which include Nisa Retail and Today’s wholesale buying group.

The statement also described the “enduring legacy” that will continue on to support independent businesses across the UK.

Details for the funeral are expected to be shared in coming days.

Dudley’s journey began 60 years ago when he founded the Grimsby limited company.

In 1977, alongside co-founder Peter Garvin, Dudley launched what would become Nisa as it is known now.

The statement continued: “After decades of tireless service, Dudley retired as chairman of Nisa-Today’s in 2006.

“His influence was not only felt in boardrooms but also at industry events, where his larger-than-life personality and unwavering enthusiasm left a lasting impression on all who knew him. He continued to serve on the D B Ramsden board, giving wise counsel to the next generation which still runs the business.

“Dudley’s contributions to the wholesale and retail sectors cannot be overstated. He built businesses with a deep sense of purpose, always striving to serve the community and uplift those around him. His vision laid the foundation for countless successful enterprises, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations.

“His impact extends far beyond the businesses he built. His dedication, integrity and visionary leadership transformed the landscape of independent retailing.

“His sons Nick (managing director, Ramsden Group of Companies, including Dee Bee Wholesale) and Sean (CEO, Ramsden International) carry forward his legacy with the same passion and commitment and our deepest sympathies go to Nick, Sean, Louisa, Chantal and Elliot, partner Yvette and sister Pam.

“We know many will want to celebrate the life of such a respected and admired figure and details of the funeral service will be shared in the coming days.”

Don’t listen to the nonsense about Galopin Des Champs – Irish Gold Cup win shows you the public adore him

This is the tale of two such pieces of misinformation.

It sure looked like the public had taken Galopin Des Champs to heart after his third Irish Gold Cup in a row[/caption]

For some reason, over the last week or so certain publications have tried to convince you the public haven’t taken to the Willie Mullins-trained star.

The suggestion has been that, until Saturday, Galopin des Champs hasn’t been a ‘people’s horse’. But he is now.

It’s hard to know what a ‘people’s horse’ is in any case. It’s such a pointless phrase.

For instance, Dorans Pride was a legend in Ireland. But much less so in the UK.

Best Mate had a following, but I’m not sure it was a crazy one.

Kauto Star and Denman got everyone excited. But the world didn’t go bonkers.

Anyway, apparently you lot out there haven’t really taken to Galopin des Champs.

It’s just nonsense. I even read somewhere that one of the reasons was his name.

I mean, horses gallop. And Galopin des Champs has galop in his name.

Seems quite a good name to me.

Come on ‘Galopin’ or keep on ‘Galopin’ seems to have a ring to it. Clearly not for some.

Galopin des Champs is also a champion. He has champ in his name. That seems rather decent as well!

Remember in the world of horse racing there is a very small group of people who put out the message about how a lot of you feel about horses.

I personally think that when Galopin des Champs fell at Cheltenham in 2022, with the Turners Novices’ Chase at his mercy, the public took to him.

As with many horses, it’s coming back from defeat that catches the imagination.

Kauto Star was once down and out. He retuned a champion.

Every time Goshen runs the mind casts back to his Triumph mishap.

A year after that Turners fall, Galopin des Champs took his first Gold Cup.

To suggest he hasn’t been a horse who fans relish to see is, for me at least, quite ridiculous.

But it’s all a game of opinions. Many think I’m wrong.

On a much more serious note, Will Prochaska, an independent campaigner who advocates for gambling reform, spoke utter nonsense on the BBC the other day about problem bettors.

In a remark which should only be laughed at, Prochaska said: “It’s actually 14 per cent of adults who are showing signs of harm and gambling at risk.”

This went totally unchallenged.

Let’s deal with that first.

Racing recently came together well when animal activists tried to make out the sport was cruel and the people involved don’t care abut the animals.

A website – www.horsepower.co.uk – was set up with accurate statistics everyone could use.

Putting down the activists was a piece of cake for any half decent broadcaster or journalist.

My question here is why is there not something similar for gambling statistics?

Make no mistake here the sport is under attack. In a way that Jack Bauer or the Night Agent would struggle to counter.

Everyone who cares should have stats to hand to respond to misinformation.

The moment the Prochaska interview went out someone in power – whoever you may be – should have countered with an immediate salvo.

You have to remember this: For certain campaigners to stay relevant they have to create chaos in their subject.

That is what Prochaska does.

His statements are, I believe, manufactured in the most extreme ways.

He will take stats from the most unusual studies to back his point. As with all stats you can make them say what you want.

Find three people who don’t rate Galopin des Champs and you can say he’s not a people’s horse!

Let’s take gambling surveys.

The completion rate is much more likely to come from people who gamble – because it’s a gambling survey!

Therefore, they will always give an artificially high rate of gambling issues.

Gambling addiction is not a problem. Addiction is a huge problem, and that includes gambling.

Understand this, and you start to comprehend the place you need to begin with to try and help and prevent problem gamblers.

Most addicts have many issues. Gambling is a bi-product of those rather than the cause.

Racing needs to be on the front foot here.

Gambling can actually have many positives. But you never hear of any of those.

As was often said back in the day of Dastardly & Muttley, someone, somewhere “do something”.

Aidan Worden tragically died following a collision between a car and a bike on Saturday

Worden was pronounced dead at the scene despite emergency service’s efforts to save him, according to Manchester Evening News.

According to the report, local authorities have launched an investigation into the collision, and specially trained officers are supporting Worden’s family.

Coach Joe Cadwallader said Aidan was well-respected as a cyclist and mechanic.

Aidan became the 25-mile time trial UK junior champion last year.

The teen was also a mentor to others on the team, saying he would be “very much missed”.

Cadwallader added: “He never judged anyone, and always supported others.

“Aidan has been part of 360 [Cycling] for over three years.

“During that time he has developed as a person, man, and rider, to a level few of us ever achieve.

“2024 saw some amazing rides from the boy that set out a clear example of what a young person can achieve with the right determination.”

She will then play three more dates at the 62,000 seater venue.
The shows will be part of Beyonce’s Cowboy Carter Tour in support of her eighth studio album Cowboy Cater.

There will be multiple presales ahead of the general on-sale. The general on-sale will take place starting Friday, February 14 at 12pm local time at beyonce.com.

Mastercard cardholders also have special access to Presale tickets in London & Paris. Mastercard Presale starts February 12 at 12pm and ends February 13 at 11am.

This can be accessed at  priceless.com/music .

There is also a separate presale known as the BeyHive presale, which starts at February 11 at 12pm and ends the following day, February 12 at 11am.

Fans can sign up for this presale from now until February 6 at 12pm UK time at livemu.sc/beyonce for both her U.S. + UK shows .

The album, which includes mega hit Texas Hold Em, hit No 1 when it was released last year.

Beyonce last played the stadium in May 2023

The Sun first exclusively revealed Beyonce would be announcing a run of tour dates in the UK back in September.

We reported that she would go head-to-head with Oasis for ticket sales – with millions of fans expected to rush to get seats to the shows.

A music source told us at the time: “Beyoncé is about to raise the roof. The demand for tickets will be just like Oasis’ and will rival the rush of fans to get their hands on a seat.

“2025 is going to be an incredible year for live music.”

Last year, Beyoncé’s eight-date UK stadium tour helped boost the economy by £8billion, with billions more set to come next year thanks to fans splashing cash on travel, hotels and eating out.

A source added: “Oasis and Beyoncé are top tier and demand for tickets will be fierce. Over seven million people tried to get Oasis tickets — and Beyoncé’s fans will be out in force too.

“This summer, major artists like Dua Lipa, Billie Eilish, Usher and Sabrina Carpenter are booked to play UK arena shows too.

“The boost to the economy is going to be phenomenal. This is what the public needs right now — something to look forward to.”

Catherine Shuttleworth, chief executive at marketing consultancy Savvy, said: “Cities fight to have Beyoncé playing because she sparks a huge influx of visitors ready to spend.

“Her tours boost hotels and restaurants and even salons as people want to look their best.”

Iconic rock star Steven Tyler made his comeback tonight at his Grammys fundraising event Janie’s Fund at The Palladium, LA.

He had retired from singing it was thought after they canceled their final tour.

It is the first time he has sung publicly.

As well as the huge UK shows, Beyonce will also play multiple dates in Paris,France.

She will also play seven cities across America including Los Angeles, New York and Las Vegas.

Virgin Media customers receive free TV upgrade after closure of popular channel is announced – check your emails now

VIRGIN Media customers should check their emails for a bittersweet TV upgrade in light of a major channel’s imminent closure.

Last week, Eurosport announced that it will disappear from UK screens at the end of February after 35 years on-air.

Fans have been left in despair about the future of free-to-air sport, with Eurosport home to tennis, the Tour de France, winter sports and more.

Much of the content is expected to move to TNT Sports channels, which is owned by the same company, Warner Bros Discovery (WBD).

However, TNT packages for Virgin Media and Sky customers cost £30 per month.

To soften the blow, selected Virgin Media customers who regularly watch Eurosport are being offered TNT Sports at no extra cost, the firm has confirmed to The Sun.

The offer is being issued for the remainder of the customer’s contract – after that, they will have to pay full price.

Customers have reported already receiving an email alerting them of the upgrade, so others should also check.

“Following Warner Bro Discovery’s decision to stop broadcasting Eurosport channels in the UK from later this month, in cases where we know customers regularly view Eurosport content, we will provide access to TNT Sports for the remainder of their contract at no extra cost,” a Virgin rep told The Sun.

“We have already contacted these customers to advise them of the channel closure and of the options available to them to continue to access Eurosport content.”

Eurosport 1 and Eurosport 2 will cease broadcasting on February 28.

The channel will continue to exist in other markets outside of the UK.

Some content will be moved to WBD’s free channel Quest.

Quest will air every MotoGP Sprint race, as well as a new weekly cycling show, highlights of the Giro d’Italia and La Vuelta a España.

WBD Sports Europe chief Scott Young has said “parts” of the Tour de France will be shown on Quest too.

The changes won’t impact the Olympics, with WBD set to continue sharing the rights with the BBC going forward.

Even more changes expected soon

Analysis by Jamie Harris, Assistant Technology and Science Editor at The Sun

Broadcasting is going through an almighty shift at the moment with the push toward streaming at a key point.

Despite this latest move, Discovery+’s days are likely numbered.

The streaming service has closed in several countries already to make way for a replacement, Max, bringing HBO and Discovery content under one roof.

The UK is one of the few big markets where Max hasn’t launched yet because of existing agreements with Sky, allowing Sky Atlantic to air big HBO-made hits like Game of Thrones and The White Lotus.

But the pair recently announced a new deal that will pave the way for Max’s launch in the UK early 2026 as a standalone app, while Sky customers will get access at no extra cost.

So expect even bigger changes in the TV and streaming world next year.

David Tennant reveals he was born with a rare disorder as he opens up on condition for the first time

DAVID Tennant has confirmed for the first time that he was born with a rare genetic disorder.

The 53-year-old actor opened up on the condition after speculation from fans started circulating online.

In particular, a group of die hard fans on Reddit had grown to believe that he had an extra toe on one of his feet.

Speaking to Metro.co.uk, David actually confirmed that he did, in fact, have six toes on his right foot, explaining it was “sort of like a nubbin”.

When asked if people knew that, he joked back: “Well, they do now.”

The revelation comes as the actor prepares to return to the BAFTAs as host for a second year in a row.

“It was a slightly mad thing to be asked to do, not something I ever aspired to or imagined would come my way,” he said of taking on presenting duties,

“When you’re standing on that stage looking out at all the most famous people in the world, you just think ‘How did I end up doing this?'”

David joked that he had a “free pass” when standing on the Bafta stage as “noone thinks he’ll be any good” as a host.

The Scottish star is preparing for another busy year at work as well, with the return of the raunchy rompfest Rivals as well as the final installment of Good Omens with Michael Sheen.

In December, the actor celebrated his 13th anniversary with wife Georgia, whom he met on the set of Doctor Who.

Georgia is the daughter of Peter Davison, who played the fifth regeneration of The Doctor, and appeared as a leading character in a 2008 episode, The Doctor’s Daughter.

In a twist of fate, David was starring as the titular character at that time – the tenth regeneration.

The couple married in 2011, and together they have five children.

Ty, 21, is following in their parents’ footsteps as an actor, most recently appearing as a young Aegon Targaryen in smash-hit House Of The Dragon.

Georgia had Ty in a previous relationship, with David officially adopting him shortly after they were married.

They also have another son, 10-year-old Wilfred, as well as daughters Olive, 12, Doris, 8, and four-year-old Birdie.

What is polydactyly?

Polydactyly is a condition when a baby is born with digits – either fingers or toes.

According to Hopkins Medicine, this tends to only occur on one hand or foot, and is not normally fully formed or functional.

While it is a rare condition, it is the most common form of congenital limb difference.

Though its cause is not officially known, in some cases it is seen to be genetic, with members of the same family having polydactyly.

Treatment for polydactyly often takes place when a child is still in their infancy, around the age of one or two, and would be the removal of the extra extremity.

However, depending on size, and how formed it is – with skin, tissue and bone all being a factor – some opt to leave it, and it places no extra burden on the body besides a cosmetic one.

A range of skin care essentials from top brand The Inkey List – which is a favourite with celebs – have gone on sale at Home Bargains for just £3.49.

Posting on the Facebook group Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK, which has 2.6million followers, an eagle-eyed shopper said: “The Inkey List £3.49 At Home Bargains.”

And the label reveals this is a massive saving on the £14.99 recommended retail price.

The post racked up more than 800 likes and nearly 1,000 of comments as people were stunned by the bargain.

Among the products on offer are Fulvic Acid Cleanser, which helps to brighten skin and gently remove make-up, Hyaluronic Acid Cleanser, which hydrates skin, and Tranexamic Acid Serum, which smooths out uneven skin.

Meanwhile, Supersolutions Express Oil, which improves texture, is also on sale alongside Q10 and Retinol serums, which both target signs of ageing.

Shoppers took to social media, stunned by the incredible buys.

One said: “This is simple and effective skincare, usually fairly reasonable but these are really good prices.”

Another gushed: “This stuff is fantastic.”

While another was stunned by the price-tag, saying: “Look at this price!”

And one mum was gutted she’d already bought elsewhere, commenting: “I’ve just spent £50 buying this for my daughter from the makers! “

The beauty brand was founded in 2018 in a bid to simplify skincare and help people understand their needs.

They make sure quality is prioritised but also try to make the goods as affordable as possible – and they’re even more pocket-friendly now with the Home Bargains buy.

A number of top Hollywood celebs have said they swear by The Inkey List products.

Scarlett Johansson is apparently a fan of the brand’s  Hyaluronic Acid Serum.

Meanwhile, the ever youthful Reese Witherspoon preps her face with a number of the Inkey List’s potions including the Q10 Serum and Caffeine Eye Cream.
