UK weather: Brits to bask in 35C heatwave today as Glastonbury revellers return home & tennis fans flock to Wimbledon

SCORCHING temperatures are forecast today in a sweltering start to the week – which could be the hottest of the year so far.

The Met Office says some parts of the UK could exceed 35C after thousands of Brits flocked to beaches over the weekend to soak up the summer rays.

Britain is expected to be hotter than holiday hotspots like Ibiza, where highs of 29C are forecast – with revellers returning home from Glastonbury and Wimbledon kicking off.

Charlwood in Surrey recorded the hottest temperature of the year so far at 33.2C on June 21.

Meteorologist Greg Dewhurst said: “Temperatures climbing quickly through the day today – but it’s not dry everywhere, we do have low pressure across the northwest of the UK, introducing some cloud and heavy rain across Northern Ireland and Scotland as we move through the day.

“But it is a hot picture as we move across England and Wales, particularly towards the southeast where temperatures could be around 34C or maybe even 35C.”

He went on to say temperatures will certainly be “higher than the weekend” and the “mid to high 20s for many of us and then the low 30s across central and eastern parts of England”, the hottest towards London.

Mr Dewhurst added: “The heat of the day could spark one or two heavy showers across eastern England as we move through the afternoon into the evening.”

A tropical night may also be on the cards, with parts of England to stay above 20C overnight into Tuesday, the Met Office said.

He said those leaving Glastonbury after the annual music festival drew to an end last night could be doing so in highs of 29C.

Since 1960, UK temperatures in June have surpassed 34C in only three years, with the hottest being 35.6C, recorded on June 28 1976.

Wimbledon is set for its hottest opening day ever on Monday, with temperatures expected to surpass the previous record of 29.3C set on June 25 2001.

The hottest day the tournament has seen was on July 1 2015 when temperatures reached 35.7C.

A heatwave in the UK is met when a location records a period of at least three consecutive days, with temperature values meeting or exceeding the heatwave temperature thresholds.

Across the north and west of the UK this is 25C, and across Greater London and the Home Counties, 28C.

A second amber heat health alert in two weeks came into force on Friday.

The alert, which covers London, the East Midlands, the South East, the South West and the East of England, will last until 6pm on Tuesday.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) also issued a yellow alert for Yorkshire and Humber and the West Midlands for the same time period, warning of significant impacts on health and social care services.

An amber alert was previously issued for all regions in England on June 19, the first time it had been used since September 2023.

London Fire Brigade assistant commissioner Thomas Goodall said: “London is already facing its second heatwave of the year and we know that people will be looking forward to getting outside to enjoy the wonderful weather.

“But the high temperatures and low rainfall in recent months means the current risk of wildfires is severe.

“So far this year, firefighters have responded to around 14 wildfires in the capital.

“There have also been countless callouts to smaller fires involving grass, trees and in other outdoor spaces, as well as in people’s gardens.

“During this latest heatwave, it is important everyone acts responsibly to prevent fires from occurring.

“As the weather has been so dry, it only takes a few sparks to lead to a fire spreading rapidly.

“In London, this is can be dangerous because so many of our green spaces lie close to homes and other properties.”

UK 5 day weather forecast

Today:

Sunny and hot with light winds for England and Wales with isolated heavy showers possible in the afternoon, particularly in northern and eastern England. Cooler and fresher in the northwest with a band of locally heavy rain gradually moving east.

Tonight:

Rain clearing Scotland, but cloud extending across northern England and Wales, bringing a little drizzle at times. Drier and clearer elsewhere. Very warm and muggy in the south and southeast.

Tuesday:

Hot and muggy in the southeast with the odd heavy shower possible. Bright and fresh in the northwest. Elsewhere, rather cloudy with patchy light rain or drizzle over the hills.

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday:

Fresher for all, with cloudier skies bringing spells of rain, these sometimes heavy on Wednesday and Friday, but some drier, brighter intervals as well. Temperatures near or slightly above average.

TWO teenagers have died and several other people have been rushed to hospital following a “tragic” crash near the Cambridgeshire border.

The collision, on June 28, saw a huge emergency response scramble to the Sandy Road between Everton and Sandy at around 2pm.

The men’s next of kin have been informed and police family liaison officers are supporting them.

A number of other individuals were injured in the smash and were rushed to hospital.

The road was closed while cops carried out an investigation into the incident.

Sergeant Nicholas Kane, from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Roads Policing Unit, said: “This is an unbelievably tragic incident, and our thoughts are very much with all of the family and loved ones of the two men who have sadly died in this collision.

“I am appealing for anyone who was travelling along Sandy Road and Everton Road shortly before 2.40pm to contact us, especially if you have dash-cam footage, even if it doesn’t show the collision itself.”

Evil predator groomed me to access my kids – my family faces lifelong sentence of pain but he’s protected behind bars

A MUM whose former partner raped and abused her children has revealed how he groomed her to “gain access to my children through me”.

Georgina Tuohey branded Brendan Cornally, 51, a “monster” who left her wanting to die because she could not cope with the devastation his horror abuse caused.

And she said the predator has left her family with a “lifelong sentence” while he is “protected” behind bars in the Midlands Prison in Portlaoise, Co Laois, before his eventual release back into society in 12 years’ time.

In an interview with The Irish Sun, Georgina told how no words can describe what pervert Cornally’s actions have done to her as a mother.

Georgina told us: “He raped my children and then I got into bed with him. Do you understand what that might do to someone?

“You self-loathe, you hate yourself. You feel you’re not good for anything. I am so angry.”

The Kildare woman is now channelling her anger to battle for new legislation — Francis’ Law — which seeks to get electronic tagging for those convicted of rape but who have time shaved off their headline sentence in mitigation.

It is named after one of her sons, who has special needs and was repeatedly raped by evil Cornally.

She said: “Until somebody actually makes changes in the law, people like me and my family, specifically my children, we’re just one of the faceless names that go into the backlog of horrendous stories.”

Georgina met Cornally in 2009 through a boxing club he was involved in.

And in the early years, she felt he had become a father figure to her kids, while also caring for his own parents and being involved in education and boxing.

But looking back now, Georgina reckons the perv knew exactly what he was doing.

She said: “He became what he needed to be in order to groom the likes of myself and to gain access to my children. It was to gain access to my children through me.”

Their relationship subsequently ended and Georgina and her kids moved to Kildare from Tullamore, Co Offaly.

But as a single mum, she was working and sent her boys to Cornally’s home town for the weekends as she trusted him.

It was in 2018 when one of Georgina’s sons told her about the abuse he had suffered at the hands of the beast, before his brother and sister disclosed that they too had been victims of his vile acts.

‘I COULDN’T COPE WITH THE PAIN’

Georgina went to the Gardai and reported it.

But it changed her life forever, as she told us: “There were times I wanted to die because I just couldn’t cope with the pain.”

Vile Cornally was first jailed for ten years for the sexual abuse and rape of one of Georgina’s sons between 2015 and 2019. The boy was aged between ten and 14 at the time.

The twisted beast was then jailed for an extra 21 months last July after pleading to the sexual assault of her daughter between May 2012 and June 2014, when the girl was aged between 13 and 15 years old.

In March, Cornally was further jailed for five years and nine months after admitting to four sample charges of raping Francis in 2018 when he was 13.

The sentence left Georgina outraged, with an overall sentence of 17.5 years.

But in reality the beast will be out in 12, with his release date set for 2037, after the Irish Prison Service informed Georgina it will include the 25 per cent standard remission given to well-behaved inmates.

SON IN ‘CATATONIC STATE’ AFTER ABUSE

By contrast, son Francis’ life has been “altered forever” by the abuse.

He was diagnosed as a child with learning difficulties and autism.

And the lad had done well to overcome challenges and finished his Leaving Cert Applied.

But after his interviews with cops, and in the run up to the trial, he went into a “catatonic state”.

Georgina said: “Francis’s life is altered forever. He’s like a two-year-old. This young man did his Leaving Cert two years ago. He can’t even cross the road anymore.

“He doesn’t know how to wash himself. You have to tell him. His prospects of friendship, relationships and employment are gone.

“That’s what this monster has done to my son.”

ELECTRONIC TAGGING DEMAND

Along with the sexual abuse, Francis was beaten, had his glasses removed so he couldn’t see and was even kept in a dark, damp room with the curtains closed while under the care of savage Cornally.

Georgina has issues with how the sentencing went, including how it heard Cornally’s guilty plea was the most valuable mitigating feature, which reduced the headline sentence from 15 years to 11.

But Georgina pointed out that Francis had to wait a number of years for a trial, only for Cornally to then enter a last-minute plea before trial, while during that time her son’s health declined.

Although Cornally never showed any remorse, he said sorry through his legal team, which Georgina believes added to his mitigation.

She now wants laws put in place to protect people from predators like Cornally through an electronic tagging system.

Georgina said: “If they’re going to get it, let them serve the mitigation years in society wearing a tag.

“It will prove that the guards know their whereabouts.

“The second thing is that for any other mother or father with children who go into relationships with offenders, they will know by the tag.

“The tag is there and the tag highlights them to be paedophiles.”

US tariffs, Gaza ceasefire, economy & dynamic pricing on gigs – Michael McGrath speaks on big issues facing Ireland

THE Irish Sun sat down with European Commissioner Michael McGrath in his office in the Berlaymont building in Brussels last week.

The ex-Irish Finance Minister was last year given the Democracy, Justice and Rule of Law portfolio by European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen.

Proposals will be taken forward next year to help protect consumer rights in an online environment[/caption]

The wide-ranging brief sees him deal with everything from gangland crime, consumer protection to cracking down on social media influencers.

At the same time, the Commission is dealing with a trade dispute with the US as well the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza.

Here, Michael McGrath gives The Irish Sun’s Head of Content, Mark May, his assessment of some of the current issues facing Ireland and the EU.

ON TARIFFS

AN agreement is needed as soon as possible and we’re doing everything we can to get one. The US side is very clear on what the EU position is, what our expectations are.

We are a trusted partner, a very reliable partner. US trade is beneficial for European companies and US companies.

Businesses crave certainty, predictability and stability and we want that as quickly as possible.

Negotiating comprehensive trade agreements or settlements can take a long time.

So it may not be possible to have a level of detail that you would normally have in a trade agreement completed by July 9, but hopefully we can have the outline of an agreement that can provide the stability we need.

ON OTHER MARKETS

WE are finding the EU is being reached out to increasingly by countries all over the world who view us as a reliable partner, a tough negotiator but one that honours deals once they are made.

Others want that certainty so we are in negotiations with a number of countries in Asia Pacific.

We are always expanding the network of trade agreements we have.

It’s in the region of 44 trading agreements with about 76 countries and we are confident that will be extended.

It’s not possible to replace the US as a trading partner nor is that the objective.

But we also have to look at opportunities elsewhere and we’re pursuing every option.

ON BIG TECH

THE Digital Services Act is our digital rule book. There are various actions underway against companies in areas such as product safety, consumer protection law, child protection and the protection of electoral integrity.

So we defend the DSA as vital for our overall architecture of the digital space and we continue to uphold and apply it without fear or favour.

It doesn’t just apply to American companies (as has been claimed by the Trump administration), it applies to European and Asian companies as well, and we continue to apply in an objective and fair ended manner.

The DSA does not target companies from any particular country. It is equally applied.

We reserve the right to set legislation in the European Union and to apply it in an objective and even-handed manner.

ON GAZA

WE need an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. We need the full restoration of access for humanitarian aid, including by the international organization. We also need the release of all the hostages by Hamas.

What we are witnessing in Gaza is abhorrent and it is untenable. The international community has to work together to find a solution.

We need an urgent ceasefire and we need the trucks that are waiting at the border to be allowed to enter Gaza.

It is unconscionable that we are watching scenes of children who are clearly malnourished and emaciated while thousands of trucks of food and medicine are waiting at the border.

Israel needs to allow those trucks into Gaza so that lives can be saved.

ON THE ECONOMY

I KNOW from my previous role there are a range of economic forecasts published by member states, including by the Irish government, which is forecasting continued growth, for the economy.

Similarly we recently had the commission forecasts for the European economy which are predict growth.

We would like it to be higher growth and that’s why we are a very serious around the competitiveness agenda.

The issues of trade have been to the fore and are complex and changing, but there are levers that are within our control and that is maximizing the potential of the EU single market.

Although a recession is not forecast, you never know what can happen with an economic shock. But maximizing the potential in the market is largely within the control of the EU and its members.

ON DYNAMIC PRICING

I WILL be developing the Digital Fairness Act. We will bring forward proposals next year to help protect consumer rights in an online environment and also focus on the protection of minors.

It will look at issues such as addictive design, dark patterns, the role of social media influencers, and child protection issues in the context of certain video games.

MEPs have raised the issue of dynamic pricing and we have given a commitment that we will examine it.

It doesn’t mean it was necessarily lead need to a ban but, at a minimum, more information is needed for consumers joining a queue to buy concert tickets.

Jhon Duran set for Al-Nassr exit just SIX MONTHS after £70m transfer – but it will cost him millions to return to Prem

JOSE MOURINHO is closing on a deal to sign Jhon Duran — just SIX MONTHS after the striker left Aston Villa for £70MILLION.

Fenerbahce boss Mourinho believes he can wrap up a loan deal to sign Duran from Al-Nassr.

The Colombian, 21, wants to leave Saudi Arabia after fulfilling his dream of playing with his hero, Cristiano Ronaldo.

He has scored 12 goals in 18 games amid reports of bust-ups in Saudi and on international duty.

Villa made a huge profit on Duran, who they signed in a £17.75m deal from Colorado Fire in January 2023.

He scored 20 goals for Villa in 78 appearances, including a winner against Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

Duran made the switch to Saudi after a prolific first half of the season in the West Midlands.

It followed on from a summer transfer window in which he was almost transferred to West Ham.

Duran had even pulled a ‘hammers’ sign during an Instagram Live before the move collapsed.

And there is no doubt that there would have been Premier League interest in his signature upon leaving Al-Nassr.

West Ham were rumoured to be interested in the striker again but his wages put him out of reach.

However, if he had made a return to England’s top-flight, it could have cost him millions.

This would be in the form of a massive tax bill from the British government

His £320,000-a-week wages were signed on a tax-free basis.

But that would only be honoured if he stays for the first two years of his contract.

Therefore, if he comes back to play in England, he would be hit with a massive tax bill.

Liverpool legend Jordan Henderson faced the same problem when he decided to return to Europe and join Ajax.
