Former Cork City star Joe O’Brien-Whitmarsh joins Accrington Stanley on loan from Southampton
JOE O’BRIEN-WHITMARSH has joined Accrington Stanley on loan from Southampton until the summer.
The 19-year-old has been a regular scorer in Premier League 2 since moving from Cork City a year ago and made his first-team debut in a Carabao Cup tie against Cardiff City.
And he will now get to add to the significant first-team experience he gained for the Leesiders during the 2023 campaign.
O’Brien Whitmarsh said: “I just really wanted to get back into men’s football. I had a period back home in Ireland playing men’s football.
“I played for Cork City, I spent five seasons there and one year in the first team. I played around 25-30 times so I am not naive to men’s football.
“I moved to Southampton just over 12 months ago and have been playing 21s football.
“I have had the odd time training with the first team and made my debut in the Carabao Cup.
“I feel I can offer something positive here and this was the perfect opportunity for me.
“I like to score goals. Hopefully I can chip in with a few goals, create a few chances and help the team.
“This is a step up in my career.
“I have had all these challenges throughout my career and been able to overcome them so this is another challenge. It’s very exciting.”
Elsewhere, Cork City have signed Preston North End ace Kitt Nelson on loan after player penned a new long-term deal with Championship side.
Nelson, 20, should get his first taste of men’s football with the Leesiders after agreeing a switch to Turner’s Cross until June 30.
Nelson said: “I’ve been here since I was eight so to sign a new deal, I’m just delighted and looking forward to the hard work ahead.
“I’m really excited for my loan spell at Cork now. They’ve got good fans out there and they’re a big ambitious club.
“So, I’m delighted with the opportunity to get some more experience.”
Ruth Langsford’s huge six figure salary revealed as she cashes in after split from Eamonn Holmes
RUTH Langsford helped herself to almost £1m in cash from her firm last year as she split from her husband Eamonn Holmes.
And that’s on top of the £2.3m she took out of her firm in 2023.
Ruth and Eamonn announced their split in May last year[/caption] The GB News presenter is now dating grief counsellor Katie Alexander[/caption]Figures for her Hey Ho Ltd firm that takes in cash from her roles on the telly like Loose Women and lucrative ad deals with the likes of Tesco reveal details of her monster paydays.
Accounts filed late last year show that for the 12 months to the end of May 2024, she took out a dividend of £770,000.
She also spent more than £12,000 on “furniture”, according to the balance sheet.
The annual accounts also revealed that the firm has cash and assets of more than £3m.
Ruth set up the company in 2013 and she is its sole director.
Last May, it was revealed how Ruth and Eamonn had ended their 14-year marriage and how he’d fallen for another woman.
Revealing their split after 14 years of marriage their spokesperson said: “Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes have confirmed their marriage is over and they are in the process of divorcing.”
GB News presenter Eamonn, 65, is now dating West Yorkshire grief counsellor Katie Alexander, 43.
Friends say Eamonn may soon propose to his new woman.
Katie wore a sparkling ring on her engagement finger on a trip to Paris in December 2024.
British tourists saw the couple looking loved-up as they came out of the Louvre.
A source said: “Eamonn has been talking openly about his plans to marry Katie and has made it clear he wants to spend the rest of his life with her.
“They’re already living together and he knows it feels right. They have a very strong connection and get on very well.
Ruth and Eamonn's relationship timeline
Before the shock split announcement, Ruth and Eamonn seemed like one of the strongest couples on UK TV – even with their signature bickering style.
Here’s how their romance played out…
1997 – The couple first meet after being introduced by mutual friends, two years after Eamonn splits from his first wife, Gabrielle, with whom he has three children.
1997-2002 – To be respectful to Gabrielle, the couple kept their relationship out of the limelight. Ruth told Daily Mail: “I thought it spoke volumes about the sort of man he was, the sort of father he was and the integrity he had. It made me love him more, not less.”
2002 – Ruth and Eamonn welcome their son, Jack, to the family.
2005 – Eamonn finalises his divorce with Gabrielle.

November 2020 – Ruth and Eamonn are replaced on their regular Friday slot by Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary in a ‘show shake-up’.
December 2021 – After a year of being moved to the bank holiday presenting slot, both Eamonn and Ruth left This Morning.
January 2022 – Eamonn debuted on GB News, while Ruth stayed with ITV in her long-standing role on Loose Women.
September 2022 – Eamonn undergoes spinal surgery after years of back issues including a trapped sciatic nerve.
November 2022 – Eamonn falls down the stairs of his Surrey home with Ruth and breaks his shoulder, requiring a new operation.
September 2023 – Eamonn has a spine and neck stretching procedure as part of his year-long recovery.

September 2024 – Eamonn was spotted on a luxury holiday in Barcelona with his new girlfriend Katie Alexander. Ruth calls in a ‘fierce’ divorce lawyer.
“She has given him a real lust for life and she looks after him.”
It comes as Ruth recently addressed her “difficult” marriage split.
She told Woman & Home magazine: “Relationship breakdowns are very difficult, but you deal with it and have to move on.
“You can let yourself crumble or you pick yourself up and get on with life. It’s a choice.”
