Ireland’s latest Lotto winners go public after winning life-changing €500k EuroMillions prize

A LUCKY family collected a cheque for a life-changing EuroMillions Plus prize worth €500k at Lotto HQ today.

The Donnelly family from Louth, fondly known as “The Donn’s”, purchased their winning ticket from Centra, The Mell, Drogheda, Co. Louth on Friday, January 24.

The tight-knit clan of 18, including brothers, sisters, nephews, and nieces, have been playing together for two years, and this is their first major win.

The head of the family syndicate, Kenneth Donnelly said: “We’ve been playing as a family for two years, and it’s always been a fun way to stay connected.”

Kenneth admitted that he’s a very honest Lottery player, photographing the bought tickets for the week ahead and sharing any wins in their group chat.

Every month, he collects €10 from the members to go towards the month’s tickets, mainly EuroMillions – but they’d certainly take a Lotto win!

He added: “We’ve had small wins of €4 or €8, which we usually bundled together to celebrate at Christmas.

“I’m usually very good at checking the tickets on the night, or soon after the draw.

“But this time, it slipped my mind, and my wife text me that the winning EuroMillions Plus ticket was bought in The Mell – our local!

“When I saw the winning numbers, I nearly died with shock! I was at work in Dublin and had the ticket sitting in the car back in Drogheda.

“I immediately had to drive back to check the ticket, and when I scanned it on the app, it popped up ‘You’ve Won Big’.

“I sent a screenshot to our group chat, (not-so) very creatively called ‘Lotto-group’, and it just erupted in excitement!”

The Donnelly family had always joked that their small wins were contributions towards buying a small island.

Now, with their significant win, their dreams have grown even grander.

One family member has already booked a trip to Nashville, and the long-awaited family trip to New York is back on the table.

National Lottery spokesperson, Emma Monaghan said: “We are absolutely delighted for the Donn family and their incredible win.

“It’s so heartwarming to see a family come together and share such a joyous occasion.

“We wish them all the best in their adventures and celebrations—and maybe we’ll be hearing about Donn Island in the near future!”

Last week was certainly remarkable for the smallest county in Ireland.

Not only did the Donnellys strike it big, but Louth also celebrated its first Lotto jackpot winner of 2025, who secured a whopping €4,642,646.

That winning ticket was sold just 2.5km from the Donn’s purchase, at Centra, Platin Road, Drogheda, Co. Louth.

Mum leaves people in disbelief after naming her daughter after a popular meal as they cry ‘she’ll be bullied for life’

PICKING the perfect name for your little one isn’t always easy, especially if you want someone a little more unique.

But one mum has left people in disbelief after she gave her daughter a name that sounds exactly like a tasty Italian meal.

People were left stunned when she revealed the unique name

She recently took to social media to reveal her little one’s name and people were convinced she was joking.

In the video, the mum, who is called Kayla, revealed she called her bundle of joy Liz Anya.

If you’re thinking that sounds a lot like Lasagne, you’re not the only one.

In the clip, the mum showed her little one in the hospital being wrapped in a blanket and a cute lilac hat.

The text over the clip reads: “So what are you gonna call her?”

Before she showed off the newborn’s name on the hospital info sheet, confirming she gave her the moniker Liz Anya.

Kayla captioned the throwback video: “Happy almost two years to my baby. Can’t believe she’s a toddler now. Liz Anya Maguire.”

After revealing her tot’s name online people still weren’t sure if Kayla was completely serious.

One said: “Just say yes or no, is that her real name?”

Kayla replied with a video of the now two-year-old Liz, responding when called by her name, putting any rumours of her joking to rest.

Some people slammed the mum for the name, as one claimed her daughter would be “bullied for life” because of the name pairing.

“This is cruel if true,” she said.

And a second agreed: “I hope this is a joke because oh wow.”

Meanwhile, others loved the unique name and praised the mum for her unique choice.

“I was like ‘oh what an adorable name, what’s wrong with that?’ then I finally understood, lasagne,” wrote one TikTok user.

“I’m so mad I didn’t think of this! My husband is Italian so this would have been genius lol,” one mum commented on the viral clip.

“This was my go-to for twin girls,” another mum wrote in the comments.

“I wanted to name my daughter Lizard but have everyone call her Liz,” someone else joked.

MORE UNIQUE NAMES

Kayla isn’t the only mum who has come under fire for picking a unique name though, as another parent was recently slammed for her “tacky” choice.

Taking to Reddit, another woman revealed that she “can’t get over” the fact that she recently spotted a child who was named “Khemistry”.

Banned Names in the UK

The UK has no law restricting names, but names that contain obscenities, numerals, misleading titles, or are impossible to pronounce are likely to be rejected when registering a child.

  • Hitler
  • Monkey
  • Cyanide
  • Martian
  • Akuma
  • Chow Tow
  • Rogue

“I’ve got nothing against the kid, it’s not her fault,” she said.

“But my God, the name is horrible. I feel so bad for this little girl.”

Reddit users flooded the comments section of the post, to share their thoughts on the unusual name choice.

One person said: “That name is a crime.”

Another person joked: “Maybe she’ll meet Fysixs and they’ll be best friends.”

A third person said: “As a Chemistry student, I do not approve this message.”

Met Office warns of SNOW and ice as temperatures plunge to freezing -5C in just days

THE Met Office is warning of snow and ice – with temperatures forecast to plunge to a freezing -5C in just days.

The national weather agency says there is a “risk of some sleet or snow showers feeding in on the east to southeasterly wind” from this weekend.

Its long-range forecast also adds a chance of Atlantic fronts “making inroads” from the west bringing “the possibility of at least transient snow” and further overnight frost.

It comes after parts of the UK were washed out with up to 60mm of rainfall last night after the Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for rain.

Meteorologist Alex Deakin said most of the UK would experience a “pretty dry week”, although added rain would hit today across parts of the country.

That band of rain is continuing to move east across England and Wales this evening – with heavy showers seen further north.

The Environment Agency has 40 flood alerts and eight warnings in place across England today.

While the Scottish Environment Protection Agency has five alerts and two warnings in place.

Chief meteorologist Frank Saunders said: “It’s worth being aware that despite a largely pleasant week ahead, there’s a good chance the UK will experience a dip in temperatures at the weekend and into next week.

“High pressure is set to move in, bringing along with it easterly winds, low temperatures and an increasing risk of wintry hazards like snow and ice.”

And meteorologist Aidan McGivern said there would be a “big change this week for the UK’s weather as high pressure builds by the end of the week, bringing a return to overnight frosts and widespread settled weather”.

Chilly conditions are due to take hold from Thursday – following what was the country’s fifth sunniest Januarys on record, despite the storms.

Sleet and snow showers later this week will be met by temperatures as low as -5C in Belfast, -3C in Birmingham, -2C in Manchester and Cardiff, and -1 in London, Newcastle and Glasgow.

Parts of Britain are still recovering from Storm Éowyn last month, which brought very strong winds and heavy rain to parts of the UK.

The highest gust of 100mph at Drumalbin in Scotland was the eleventh highest maximum gust since the Met Office started naming storms in 2015.

More than 100,000 properties were left without power, with further disruption caused by road and rail closures, fallen trees and damage to buildings.

This was swiftly followed by a weather system named as Storm Herminia by the Spanish Meteorological Service – with more significant impacts seen in Spain and France – struck British shores.

5-day weather forecast

This Evening and Tonight:

Cloud and patchy rain clearing southeast England, then increasingly dry with clear periods for most.

Blustery showers in northern areas, these wintry on hills. Colder than recent nights with a patchy frost developing. Rather breezy.

Wednesday:

A dry and bright day for most with periods of winter sunshine.

Showers in the northwest, wintry over the hills at first, but these fading during the day. Feeling colder.

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:

A sunny Thursday for many but isolated freezing fog patches may linger locally.

Most places staying dry on Friday and Saturday albeit generally cloudier. Turning colder with widespread overnight frosts.

Michael Schumacher’s close pal Jean Todt gives rare health update after ‘regular’ visits to see stricken F1 star

MICHAEL Schumacher’s close pal and ex-Ferrari boss Jean Todt has opened up about his “regular” visits to the stricken Formula One legend.

The seven-time world champion, now 56, has not been seen in public since his horror skiing accident in 2013.

The ex-Ferrari and FIA boss previously said Schumacher is ‘no longer the Michael we knew’[/caption]

His family has remained fiercely private about his condition, with only a select few given access to the German ace.

Todt, who led Ferrari during Schumacher’s dominant era, remains one of the family’s closest confidants.

Speaking to La Repubblica, the former FIA president revealed he still visits Schumacher frequently and cherishes their friendship despite the tragic turn of events.

“The family has decided not to answer the question (on his condition). A choice that I respect,” Todt said.

“I see him regularly and with affection, him and his family.

“Our bond goes beyond the past work. It is part of my life, which today is very far from Formula 1.”

BEHIND CLOSED DOORS

Todt’s words offer a rare glimpse into Schumacher’s life behind closed doors.

He has previously acknowledged that his old friend “is no longer the Michael we knew”, but has remained steadfast in his support.

The Frenchman is one of the very few people allowed to visit Schumacher, joining a tight circle that includes his former teammate Luca Badoer, longtime manager Sabine Kehm, and ex-Ferrari ace Felipe Massa.

It is believed that Schumacher and Todt still share their love for racing, with reports suggesting they watch Formula One together whenever possible.

GRANDDAD SCHUEY

The F1 legend is now set to become a grandfather for the first time after his daughter Gina announced her pregnancy just three months after her wedding.

The 27-year-old shared the exciting news on Instagram, writing: “Impatiently awaiting the arrival of our little girl.”

She accompanied the message with a picture of a foal standing next to pink balloons.

Gina married longtime partner Iain Bethke at the family’s £27million Majorca villa last September, with initial reports claiming Schumacher was present.

Guests were reportedly forced to hand over their phones to prevent any leaks.

But Schumacher’s former F1 teammate Johnny Herbert later dismissed the speculation as “A1 fake news”.

“It will always be a closed shop,” Herbert told Flashscore.

“The most recent rumour was he attended his daughter’s wedding.

“Unfortunately, from what I understand that was all A1 fake news and no truth in it.”
