IT’S TIME to bring back the weekend break as experts say Brits favouring day trips is not good news for the future of seaside towns.
An expert has claimed that the economy in some of the UK’s bustling seaside towns has declined despite a huge amount of visitors continuing to go year on year.
Blackpool, the home of Pleasure Beach Resort, is struggling to maintain overnight visitors, according to reports.
A tourism leader in Blackpool has revealed that its economy took a hit in 2024 despite there being an increase in visitors – all because the number of overnight stays declined.
The day trip is what Brits are opting for as Blackpool is not short on visitors, with the footfall on the famous Blackpool Promenade increasing year-on-year.
The Illuminations switch-on ceremony in 2024 saw around 80,000 people attend.
While it means a more affordable day out, it results in hotels being unable to make or maintain bookings.
Claire Smith, president of hoteliers group StayBlackpool, described 2024 as the “perfect storm”.
She claimed the challenges Brits experienced from the cost of living crisis to the bad weather influenced the lack of overnight holiday makers.
And Blackpool wasn’t the only place that felt the impact either; VisitBritain’s statistics for 2023 showed that cities have more day visitors than weekend ones.
VisitBritain revealed London had 174.5 million day visitors in 2023, but just 18.3 million overnighters.
Greater Manchester saw 43.9 million daytrippers, but only 5.5 million who came to spend the night.
Last year, The Telegraph even noted a rise in what they called the “extreme day tripper”.
The term describes people who go on the ultimate day trip, like jumping on a flight to Italy to sample their pizza for an afternoon before coming home that same evening.
The term ‘Victorian seaside break‘ was a term used for workers who swapped city life for the coast to enjoy a few days of entertainment and improve their health.
Over the last few years, we’ve fallen back in love with our country’s coastline, with some going for the purpose of a ‘Victorian seaside break’.
However, while turning up for the day to enjoy the sunshine and have fish and chips is fun for us it doesn’t do much for the economy.
To boost it, visitors need to stay, and spend money on local hospitality from hotels to restaurants.
VisitEngland’s CEO Patricia Yates has said: “Overnight holiday visitors [are] spending an average of £94 per night in England compared to £44 for day visits.
“We know how important it is for destinations to convert day-trippers into overnight stays, which also encourages visitors to discover more of an area and to go on and spend in local businesses including accommodation and hospitality.”
Interestingly, ABTA found that the average number of holidays taken per person has reached a new high.
The trend has become that Brits prefer quantity of quality, and are going on more day breaks or shorter trips to break up the year.

A LOVE Island legend has revealed his incredible body transformation in a new topless video.
The former reality star met the love of his life on the hit ITV show and now they have three kids together.
Jamie Jewitt today showed off his new body after saying he was transforming his “dad bod”.
The former Islander was one of the lucky ones to meet his future wife on the show.
Jamie is now married to his 2017 Love island co-star Camilla Thurlow and they have three beautiful children.
The busy dad has revealed he has been upping his game in the gym and today posted a shirtless video of his impressive body transformation.
In the Instagram post he can be seen showing off his muscles, playing with his kids and working out at the gym.
Jamie captioned the post with: “DAD BOD DIARIES! 94.1kg and I’m feeling goooooooood! 
”
Last May, Jamie and Camilla‘s family got a little bigger with the addition of their third child.
At the time, they shared pictures of their full brood on Instagram and Camilla wrote: “And just like that.. we are a family of 5.
“Meet baby Brodie.
“12.38pm 8th May 6lb15oz.”
Camilla and Jamie are also parents to Nell, four, and two-year-old Nora.
The couple announced they were adding to their family with a sweet post on Instagram.
Camilla wrote: “Our lovely girls are getting a baby brother. Delighted to share our little family is growing, baby boy due in Spring 2024, it’s going to be a busy house!”
She also shared an adorable video of her girls getting in on the action, pretending to study for the arrival of their little brother.
In their bedroom, the girls were looking at a blackboard which read: “Big sister 101: with brand new module ‘Boys’. Final exam May 2024.”
DOTING DAD
Camilla previously gushed over her husband in a birthday tribute – and confessed Jamie is an amazing dad to their children.
Sharing a sweet montage of Jamie with his daughters, she said: “You’ve always been the man who had it all, naturally good at anything you tried.
“But the single greatest thing I’ve ever seen you do is to turn all that towards your family, because now our children are growing up wanting nothing more than to be best friends with their dad.
“Because he is the person who helped them believe that they hold the magic to make their own dreams come true.
“Happy birthday @jamiejewitt_ , it’s going to be another big year for us and we can only keep doing our best.
“But I hope you can see how much everything you do means to our family, because kids don’t get to pick their parents, but if they did our little girls would pick you, they would pick you every single time.”
MEETING IN THE VILLA
The couple met of third season of Love Island in 2017.
At first Camilla, who previously snogged Prince Harry, initially struggled to find love in the villa, after she was dumped by millionaire Jonny Mitchell.
However, all that changed when former Calvin Klein model Jamie joined the show for the Casa Amor part of the show and swept her off her feet.
They bonded over books and Camilla’s passion for humanitarianism – including her work clearing landmines in Afghanistan.
It wasn’t long before Camilla fell for the hunk, and told the other other Islanders: “I am falling for him and I’m trying really hard not to and so I’m fighting every feeling.”
After coming third on the show, the happy couple continued their romance outside of the villa and are now enjoying being married with kids.

Marcus Rashford ‘willing to make sacrifice’ to seal ‘dream’ Barcelona transfer – but Man Utd may still need to help out
MARCUS RASHFORD is reportedly prepared to take a pay cut to make his “dream” move to Barcelona a reality.
The out-of-favour Manchester United striker has been left out for ten-straight games by boss Ruben Amorim.
Rashford watched on from the stands as the Red Devils picked up a dramatic 2-1 win over Rangers on Thursday night.
The 27-year-old has reportedly been offered to clubs all over Europe this January.
But only Barcelona remain in the race as teams struggle to take on Rashford’s £325,000-a-week wage packet.
According to reports in Spain, Rashford is “willing to lower his salary” in order to push through a loan move to the Nou Camp.
Mundo Deportivo cite negotiations between Rashford’s camp and Barcelona sporting director Deco.
The report suggests the Catalan giants are struggling to afford the England striker’s wages unless they offload players.
Rashford is reportedly “aware” of the issue and would “take a pay cut” in the short term to make the move happen.
Even then, it would take United paying “at least half of the forward’s salary” for a deal to be struck.

Dortmund, AC Milan, and Napoli have all been linked with a move for Rashford this January.
But all have found his wages to be a stumbling block in negotiations.

Just 18 months later, Amorim was unable to confirm on Friday if he would ever pull on a United shirt again.
Asked about the England forward’s future, the Portuguese boss replied: “I don’t know. I really don’t know.
“We will see in the end of the window what happened.
“And then we will talk about that in the moment.”
United currently sit 13th in the Premier League table with just one win from their last five games.
The Red Devils have lost 10 of their 22 league games this season, with a tough visit to Fulham next up on Sunday.

A STUNNED woman has revealed that she peeked inside her hoarder neighbour’s home – only to be left totally horrified by what she saw.
The woman lives in a maisonette in the US and was left baffled when her neighbour of three years abruptly moved out in the middle of the night.
After taking a look inside her neighbour’s property to see what was going on, she was horrified to see mountains of rubbish, with all things from takeaway wrappers, pizza boxes and paper bags, to fizzy drink cans and countless black sacks full of waste.
And if you thought that was bad, prepare to be horrified, as she even claimed that professional cleaners, who were sent in to dispose of the waste, even found dead cats amongst the endless plastic and beer bottles.
Shocked by the huge pile of rubbish, which covered the entire room and was so huge it was almost touching the ceiling, the anonymous woman took to social media to share it with others, leaving many in complete shock.
Posting on Reddit, on the r/oddlyterrifying thread, the woman, who writes under the username @mama_ji, uploaded a picture of the mess.
Alongside her post, she wrote: “Our duplex neighbour of three years mysteriously moved in the middle of the night.
“We had never seen the inside of his house the whole time.
“Now we know why.”
The woman claimed that despite living in the same building and contrary to what people may think, she and her partner “never smelt anything” from her neighbour’s flat.
She also shared that it’s not just her neighbour’s house that is filled with mess – it’s his car too.
She explained: “We only found out because I saw him on our Ring [camera] dragging stuff and his dog into a company car, because his was so messy it couldn’t be driven, and woke up to this.”
The bewildered woman phoned her neighbour immediately after his departure, as she shared: “Worse, when we asked him why he left, he said it was because his rent was being RAISED to $600. A two bed condo with a backyard and all.”
Not only this, but she also revealed that her neighbour claimed the landlords “wanted me out”.
What is a hoarder & is it a medical condition?
According to the NHS, Hoarding is a mental health problem that involves storing an “excessive” number of items in an unmanageable way. Newspapers, clothes, junk mail, bills, containers, and household supplies are among the variety of items kept.
The disorder can impact a person’s everyday life by putting a strain on relationships when someone else tries to clear the clutter and also makes it difficult to move around the house. The condition causes unhygienic living conditions, fire risks, and trip hazards.
Hoarding is often associated with other mental health conditions including severe depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder and psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia.
A GP can recommend the best treatment, which may include therapy or antidepressants.
Due to his swift exit, the neighbour reportedly said: “I didn’t even have a chance to clean some of it up.”

Reddit users were left horrified by the image of inside the hoarder’s home – and many eagerly flocked to the comments to share their thoughts.
One person questioned: “How does hoarding get this bad? For real. What’s the progression?
“Does it start with an overflowing garbage can morphing into a garbage pile? It’d be wild to see a time lapse.”

The next-door-neighbour wrote back and confirmed: “We did look and nothing! The building is quite old and all concrete.”
A third commented: “Wonder how many dead cats [are] in there.”
