Balaclava-clad ‘travellers’ accused of terrorising town by ripping up gardens, setting animals on FIRE & raiding shops

BALACLAVA-CLAD “travellers” are accused of terrorising a town by ripping up gardens, setting animals on fire and raiding shops.

Around 300 people attended a public meeting last night to complain over police inaction after they were left “terrified” by a weekend of “shocking” criminal activity, which also saw the group of men allegedly threaten firefighters.

A convoy of up to 30 cars carrying dozens of men, one with a pick axe handle, are said to have tore around in the Cambridgeshire Fens on Saturday, ripping up farmers’ fields, ruining crops, speeding through villages and intimidating the locals, who have been left “traumatised”.

The men also damaged fire engines and attacked fire crew, who were taking part in a training exercise in Chatteris – with Cambridgeshire Police “ignoring” all 999 calls.

Farmers and residents gave harrowing stories at the meeting at Manea British Legion Club, which was called by MP Steve Barclay and Manea councillor Charlie Marks.

It was attended by Cambridgeshire’s Chief Constable Nick Dean, who heard from dozens of residents, who said they had been left unprotected despite making 999 calls for help.

One resident told police they needed to improve their response in the future, warning: “You get this wrong and you will have another Tony Martin on your hands.”

Martin was a farmer from Norfolk, England, who shot a burglar dead in his home in August 1999.

Farmer Matthew Latter, from Sutton Gault, Chatteris, said he was forced to barricade himself and his young family in their home after more than 70 masked men smashed their way through gates, and moved concrete blocks to access his land.

He said they suffered three-and-a-half hours of mayhem on the land around their home as he made numerous calls to police.

He added: “We had at least 70 people literally take over our farm from 1.30pm to 4pm. There were 13 4x4s.

“I called the police three times, I gave the What3Words coordinates of exactly where they were but we didn’t have any response – absolutely zero.

“My seven-year-old daughter was crying and was utterly terrified.”

Another woman said she called 999 as the petrol station at Witcham Toll was being robbed, but was told to call back on 101 as it was not an emergency.

Leo Butler, from Chatteris, said he had never seen anything like it and added: “What I would like to know is where were the police – there were no helicopters, no police cars, not one police officer – nothing.

“If the police aren’t going to confront these people somebody’s got to.”

Robert Sears, a former Conservative councillor, added “I haven’t seen lawlessness like this anywhere in the world” after he was confronted by 25 muddy 4x4s driving towards him.

Councillor Marks, who witnessed some of the criminality in Manea, said it was pure luck that no one had been killed or seriously injured.

“We could have been mourning a member of our village today,” he said.

The lawless activity began in Wimblington, then the cars zoomed around the Fens, with vehicles mounting pavements and speeding at more than 60mph in 30mph zones.

Chief Constable Dean told the meeting he had gone with his “gut feeling” over the allocation of extra resources and commented that “I perhaps got it wrong in hindsight”.

A Cambridgeshire police spokesperson said: “We are appealing for information, dashcam footage or CCTV following a number of incidents of hare coursing, yesterday causing thousands of pounds’ worth of damage to crops as well as putting lives at risk with dangerous driving.

“Up to 25 vehicles were seen, some in convoy, in various parts of the county, These included Fordham, Ely, Prickwillow, Littleport, Welney, Chatteris, Manea, Wimblington and Doddington.

“We understand the impact this has had on the community and we are investigating.”

Major boost for thousands of Irish commuters as two new 24-hour bus routes launched

IRISH commuters are set for a major boost as two new 24-hour bus routes launched this week.

The E1 and E2 services kicked off yesterday, January 27, as part of the BusConnects Network Redesign in Dublin.

Part 6a of the plan has been rolled out[/caption]

They began phase 6a of the new bus route design, which will include 13 new routes.

The scheme is being overseen by the National Transport Authority (NTA), who are in charge of public transport across the country.

And the bus plan will be delivered from a partnership between NTA, Dublin Bus and Go-Ahead Ireland.

Routes E1 and E2 will run 24-hour services, bringing a massive boost to commuters who work late nights or early mornings.

And it’s sure to be a big hit among partygoers who are out late.

The two new journeys are on the new E-spine routes that are part of the overall plan.

They will travel from north of Ballymun through Dublin city centre, to Dún Laoghaire and the Bray/ Ballywaltrim areas south of the city.

The E-spine routes and especially E1 and E2 will provide better access to some of the capital’s biggest colleges.

UCD, DCU, and Trinity College will be more accessible on the new bus route.

And hospitals such as the Rotunda and the Mater, as well as Loughlinstown, will be more accessible.

The introduction of routes E1 and E2 will bring the number of 24 hour bus services under TFI to 12.

The scheme aims to make it easier for people to use public transport over cars, and help to improve social interaction.

Bosses said the new plans are in line with the recommendations of the Government’s Night-Time Economy Taskforce.

The taskforce hopes to improve public life and provide good public transport solutions at night.

Phase 6a will serve the major commuter belt areas of Dublin Airport, north Dublin, the city centre, south Dublin, Dun Laoghaire and north Wicklow.

The changes are likely to bring about a seven per cent increase in bus services in these areas.

Overall, the phase will bring with it 13 new bus routes.

A new route, 19, will run from Dublin Airport into the city centre through Ballymun and Drumcondra.

And just days ago, new routes L1, L2, L3, L12, L14, L15, L26 and L27 became operational.

The new routes serve in particular the areas of south Dublin and north Wicklow.

Interim CEO of the National Transport Authority, Hugh Creegan said: “Today’s launch reflects our commitment to creating a more connected, accessible and reliable public transport system, ensuring our passengers have more choices and flexibility in their daily travel.

“Expanding our round-the-clock services and enhancing our connectivity is essential to support Ireland’s growing population with sustainable, efficient transport options.”

Ireland shoot down injury concerns over Leinster out-half Sam Prendergast ahead of Six Nations showdown vs England

Assistant coach Andrew Goodman said the out-half suffered a dead leg but will be fine for Ireland’s clash against England on Saturday

Ireland are based at ‘The Campus’ in Quinta Do Lago, which is a state-of-the-art performance centre used by some of the world’s top teams and athletes.

It has also high performance gym, tennis and padel courts, swimming pool, cycling, group classes and personal training, recovery suites and sports rehabilitation.

Simon Easterby leads the men in green ahead for their Six Nations opener against England on Saturday evening with Andy Farrell forced to take a sabbatical ahead of the 2025 Lions Tour of Australia.

And speaking ahead of Saturday’s clash against Steve Borthwick’s side in the Algarve, Ireland back’s coach Andrew Goodman dismissed any fears that Prendergast wouldn’t be fit for the huge clash before revealing the injury.

He said: “Yeah, he trained fully today, just a little dead leg I believe. I’m sure he’ll be alright.

“It’s been a great couple of months for Sam, just the game experience he’s managed to gather up both with Ireland – first with Emerging Ireland, then Ireland.

“Then some big Champions Cup games away to La Rochelle, home to Bath, so it’s been a great period for him to get real game experience.

“I know he valued the time at Leinster when he was training alongside the senior squad as an academy member but to get out there and feel it for himself, there’s been huge growth in his game.”

The 21-year-old is likely to start for Ireland, but Munster’s Jack Crowley would be able to step in if there’s any issues with the injury on Saturday.

Elsewhere, England have received a major boost ahead of their opening Six Nations clash against Ireland in Dublin.

Scrum-half Alex Mitchell is set to return for the Aviva Stadium opener in Dublin on Saturday.

The 27-year-old participated fully in training on Monday after recovering from a knee injury.

Steve Borthwick’s side are in Girona, Spain, ahead of their opening game in the Irish capital.

Mitchell missed the Autumn Nations Series due to a neck injury but now looks ready to face the defending champions.

The Northampton star’s availability will come as a major boost to under pressure Borthwick.
