THE HISTORY OF LIDL IN IRELAND

LIDL first opened in Germany in 1973.

Back then, it employed just three people, stocking 500 product lines.

The first Irish store, located just off Molesworth Street in Dublin, was opened in 1999.

This was Lidl’s first entry into the Irish grocery market.

Then, Lidl opened more stores in 2000, in Limerick, Letterkenny, Mullingar, Athlone, Cavan, Ballinasloe and Portlaoise.

Now, the retailer has over 180 stores and three distribution centres, employing over 6,000 people.

They work with a network of more than 260 Irish suppliers from the communities they operate in.

He launched his ambush at around 11.15am on March 21, 2023.

Dashcam evidence reveals Corden pulling a lollipop school crossing sign from the boot of his car and smashing up the lorry in his brutal attack.

Seconds later he is seen with three other thugs armed with an axe, sledgehammer and gun.

A binman hides inside the vehicle, as the gang begin beating up another employee.

The group can be seen shattering the bin lorry windows with their weapons.

After the dashcam footage cut off, a gun shot could be heard.

It is understood the horrific incident was sparked after a different bin lorry nearly smashed into Corden’s Vauxhall Corsa.

Incensed with road rage, Corden rallied the trio who unknowingly went after another crew.

Their victims, who were unaware of the near smash, were assaulted in what is understood to have been a case of mistaken identity.

Corden, 29, Jack Spackman, 25, and Kyle Worthington, 21 appeared Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court this week.

The court heard three binmen were injured, with one hospitalised needing treatment for his face, head and leg.

Corden admitted two charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and conspiracy to commit grievous bodily harm with intent.

He also pleaded guilty to two charges of wounding with intent, possession of an offensive weapon in a public place, damaging property, driving without a licence and driving without insurance.

Spackman pleaded guilty to one charge of conspiracy to commit grievous bodily harm with intent, possession of an offensive weapon in public and criminal damage.

Worthington accepted charges of conspiring to cause grievous bodily harm with intent and possessing a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence.

Spackman and Worthington are due to be sentenced on February 7.

Corden’s basis of plea hasn’t been accepted by the prosecution so his case could be adjourned.

All three men are remanded in custody.

Landmark car dealership announces sudden closure in just DAYS under plans to axe 50 sites

A RENOWNED car dealership has announced it will close in just two days  in a huge blow to customers.

Allen Ford in Rugby will permanently close its sales and service operations on January 31.

The Allen Ford car dealership has been in business for 30 years and will finally be closing its doors[/caption]

The announcement has sparked confusion, as it remains unclear whether this closure is linked to Ford’s wider plans to axe 50 dealerships across the UK by 2025.

A spokesperson for Allen Ford Rugby said: “Effective from 31st January, our Ford Sales and Service operation at Rugby will close permanently.

“Communications in the form of letters and emails have been sent to as many customers as possible to inform them.”

The closure comes as a blow to the local community, with the dealership being a landmark business in the area.

Staff at the site were unable to comment on potential job losses, leaving many employees uncertain about their futures.

As part of Ford’s long-term strategy to enhance profitability, the company is prioritising larger, more profitable sites while gradually phasing out smaller operations

Just over four years ago, the company announced its intention to cut its 395 sales outlets in half, aiming to reduce the number to around 210 by 2025.

A Ford spokesperson said: “We have been actively restructuring the dealer network over the past several years to better align with the evolving needs of our business and deliver enhanced service.

“It is also worth noting that all but three of the dealerships impacted have retained their Ford Authorisation section, so they are still operating just without a retail arm.”

While the Rugby site will no longer operate as a sales and service hub, it is unclear if it will retain any Ford-related services.

The antiques expert urged fans to buy their loved ones a copy of his booked, A Lifetime In Antiques, while there were copies still available.

Despite being gravely ill, Michael managed to joke that his tome could even become a “collector’s item” if he passed away.

Michael said in the Instagram video in December: “The perfect gift for Christmas, especially for someone you love, especially for someone you don’t want to spend a great deal of money on.

“Hospital bed marketing. Pulling on the heart strings, I suppose. If you’re looking for a Christmas gift, why not buy A Lifetime in Antiques by Michael Baggot.

“There are very few copies left and the chances are, as you can see, I’m in a hospital bed on considerable amounts of medication, coursing through my veins, I may well drop dead soon and in that case the value of it will soar and become a collector’s item.”

Dancing on Ice exit ‘revealed’ as contestant set to finally be axed after shock two shock eliminations and fan backlash

DANCING on Ice’s next exit has been ‘revealed’ as one contestant is set to finally be axed after shock two shock eliminations and fan backlash.

Retired rowing legend Sir Steve Redgrave, 62, has emerged as the favourite to be sent home next.

Dancing on Ice’s next exit has been ‘revealed’ as one contestant is set to finally be axed[/caption]

Despite narrowly escaping the skate-off last week, he faces mounting pressure following a low score in week three.

With odds of 5/4 (44.44% probability), he’s the frontrunner to go home in the next elimination.

The competition remains fierce, with Michaela Strachan continuing to dominate.

After another stellar performance, she has solidified her position as the frontrunner, shortening her odds to 7/4 (36.36% probability) and showing no signs of slowing down.

Sam Aston has also gained momentum, improving his position to 3/1 after a joint top performance with Michaela in week three.

Mollie Pearce remains close behind with odds of 11/4, keeping herself firmly in the running for a top spot.

The sportsman, who is paired with Vicky Ogden, recently received support from ITV viewers after bosses made him look like “a joke”.

The Olympic champ and his skating partner had performed a routine to the 1973 song Rock The Boat.

But they were both dressed in sailor costumes, with Steve – who is 6ft 5in tall – bizarrely wearing sparkly shorts teamed with blue and white stripy socks with his skates.

Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, disgruntled fans shared their annoyance after seeing Steve’s first skate on the ice.

One wrote: “Oh silly outfit for Sir Steve. Don’t make him a joke. Everyone vote for Steve let’s mess up the show. They’ve set him up with that outfit.”

Another added: “Sir Steve has been made to look a right plonker.”

A third said: “Done Steve dirty there with that outfit.”

And another fumed: “Omg wtf is this lol Steve Redgrave in them shorts.”

Sir Steve is the oldest contestant to take part in this year’s series of Dancing On Ice.

Earlier this month, Steve spoke to The Sun’s TV Mag and admitted what he wears is ‘the least of his worries’.

The dad-of-three suffers from diabetes and arthritis and said he is more concerned about his dance moves on the ice than sequins.

In fact, he had hoped his opening night ensemble would be “over the top”.

Sir Steve said: “With the type of skating we’re doing, part of it is about being elegant on your skates, and that doesn’t come easy to me.

“When I first signed up, they said to me, ‘What about the sequins?’ That’s the least of my worries! I don’t mind that side of it.

“They mentioned about the spray tan when we had our first get-together. That was just after a holiday, so  I was reasonably well tanned.

“By the time we get to the first show, I’ll probably be pale just with the worry, so I’ll need some spray tan.”

He added: “I’m not sure how glammed  up I’ll be – I’m hoping it’s over the top. I just don’t want people to think that’s normally how I would dress!”
