I’ve tested 100 dupes as a beauty editor – here’s the ones that REALLY work including LED mask that saves you £366

ALMOST daily, I am asked if dupes are any good.

Like most of life’s big questions, the answer is complicated.

Budget brands are owned by the same parent companies as luxury names[/caption]

Beauty editor Tara Ledden has tried over 100 dupes[/caption]

Despite the fact that it can be seen as companies benefiting from someone else’s hard work, the thrill of finding a bargain means I just can’t help myself.

And I’m in good company.

According to market researchers Mintel, 64 per cent of Gen Z believe buying dupes is a good way to save money, while 74 per cent agree that affordable products work just as well as premium ones, which is becoming a problem for luxury brands.

This month Charlotte Tilbury launched “Legendary. For A Reason”, its campaign which promotes her “undupable” products.

“I’m an innovator, not an imitator,” says Charlotte, who won a legal battle with Aldi over its mirror image blush palette in 2019.

“When you dupe, you dupe the consumer.”

But there is a smart way to shop for cheaper copycat products.

Many budget brands are owned by the same parent companies as luxury names, where factories and research are often shared.

Take regular brand L’Oreal, which owns luxe names such as SkinCeuticals, La Roche Posay and CeraVe, as well as make-up brands YSL and Lancome, among others.

So here I present my top ten dupes.

Remember, once they’re on your face, nobody’s going to know what you paid for them.

JELLY CLEANSER

Drunk Elephant Beste No. 9 Jelly Cleanser tube.
Supplied
Drunk Elephant’S Beste No9 jelly cleanser costs £31 for just 150ml[/caption]
Byoma Creamy Jelly Cleanser bottle and cap.
Supplied
Byoma’s creamy jelly cleanser is just £9.99 for a bigger bottle[/caption]

REAL: Drunk Elephant Beste No9 jelly cleanser, 150ml, £31, lookfantastic.com

DUPE: Byoma creamy jelly cleanser, 175ml, £9.99, boots.com

SAVE: £21.01

BOTH have a jelly-like formula that lightly foams to melt away grime without upsetting the skin barrier – perfect for skincare-obsessed teens and adults alike.

And both contain vitamin E and glycerin, to hydrate skin, but Byoma is missing the soothing aloe vera found in the Drunk Elephant.

Neither is a match for a make-up remover, however, so best used after micellar water or a balm cleanser.

CLEANSING BALM

Clinique Take the Day Off Cleansing Balm jar.
Clinique’s Take The Day Off cleansing balm will set you back £34
Supplied
B by Superdrug Melting Cleansing Balm: Shea butter formula, removes dirt and makeup, suitable for all skin types and the delicate eye area.
Superdrug’s B. Melting cleansing balm is only £9.99
Supplied

REAL: Clinique Take The Day Off cleansing balm, £34, marksandspencer.com

DUPE: Superdrug B. Melting cleansing balm, £9.99, superdrug.com

SAVE: £24.01

AT face value, these don’t look very similar and it’s important to note you only get half as much product in the Superdrug tub.

But the formulas used in each of these balms overlap heavily.

Both contain vitamin E, as well as linoleic acid to brighten the skin, and seed oils to moisturise it, as well as the same blend of emollients that are responsible for the balm texture.

In a blind test, I would struggle to tell them apart.

LED FACE MASKS

The Dr Dennis Gross DRx SpectraLite FaceWare Pro mask is £465[/caption]
StylPro Wavelength LED face mask.

The StylPro Wavelength LED mask is just as good and comes in at £99[/caption]

REAL: Dr Dennis Gross DRx SpectraLite FaceWare Pro, £465, cultbeauty.co.uk

DUPE: StylPro Wavelength LED, £99, lookfantastic.com

SAVE: £366

NEARLY £100 for a dupe – really?

But when you consider the cost of high-end LED masks, it’s by far the best value on the market.

Both boast red LED, near-red LED and blue LED to reduce breakouts, wrinkles and inflammation, but I like that the StylPro is made from a flexible material which makes it comfier than the upmarket version, and easier to pack for travel.

PERFUME

Yves Saint Laurent Black Opium perfume bottle.
Supplied
YS’s Black Opium eau de parfum is £67 for 30ml[/caption]
Midnight Blossom Eau De Toilette bottle.
Supplied
M&S Midnight Blossom eau de toilette is just £6 for 30ml[/caption]

REAL: YSL Black Opium eau de parfum, £67 for 30ml, boots.com

DUPE: M&S Midnight Blossom eau de toilette, £6 for 30ml, marksandspencer.com

SAVE: £61

IT took less than five seconds for me to draw this parallel the first time I sprayed M&S Midnight Blossom, as it’s so similar.

As they dry, the two scents differ slightly, with M&S’s being more cosy and masculine, while Black Opium remains sweet and attention-grabbing.

But at a tenth of the price, you can afford to reapply the M&S version as often as you need to.

NIGHT SERUM

Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair serum bottle.
Supplied
Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair synchronised multi-recovery complex serum, costs £48.75[/caption]
Revolution Pro Miracle Night Serum bottle.
Supplied
This Revolution Pro dupe is only £12[/caption]

REAL: Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair synchronised multi-recovery complex serum, £48.75, lookfantastic.com

DUPE: Revolution Pro Miracle night serum advanced complex, £12, lookfantastic.com

SAVE: £36.75

THERE are incredibly similar ingredients listed on both these night-time products, though the Estée Lauder one has far fewer overall.

It has less perfume, too, but both contain a heavy dose of antioxidants as well as the same three skin-identical moisturising ingredients (glycerin, hyaluronic acid and squalane) and plenty of microbiome-friendly additions to bolster the skin barrier.

BRONZER

Benefit Hoola bronzer in its compact.
Supplied
Benefit’s Hoola Matte Bronzer will set you back £26[/caption]
Natural Collection bronzer made with meadowfoam seed oil and natural mica.
Supplied
Natural Collection’s bronzer is just £3[/caption]

REAL: Benefit Hoola Matte Bronzer, £26, boots.com

DUPE: Natural Collection Bronzer, £3, boots.com

SAVE: £23

THE Natural Collection Bronzer surprisingly comes in more shades and a formula that’s just as pigmented and easy to blend out.

Although it doesn’t have a mirror in the compact, it shares the same square-shaped pan.

Arguably, the plastic of the Natural Collection bronzer is more durable than the cardboard of the Benefit, although it’s not as easily recycled.

EYEBROWS

Glossier Boy Brow tube.
Supplied
Glossier Boy Brow is £22[/caption]
Essence Make Me Brow eyebrow gel mascara.
Supplied
Essence’s cult Make Me Brow gel is under a fiver[/caption]

REAL: Glossier Boy Brow, £22, uk.glossier.com

DUPE: Essence Make Me Brow gel, £4.44, amazon.co.uk

SAVE: £17.56

THERE’S a whole Reddit thread from make-up insiders dedicated to this trendy dupe, so that’s a pretty fair indicator that it has what it takes to impress.

They both have a long-hold, waxy consistency and added fibres that grip on to brow hairs to make them look fuller – perfect for disguising years of overplucking.

Boy Brow’s shade range is better, but if you are a brunette, there are plenty of Essence options to choose from.

FOUNDATION

Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Makeup foundation, SPF 10.
Supplied
Estée Lauder double wear foundation is a pricey £39.50[/caption]
Collection Lasting Perfection Full Coverage Foundation bottle.
Supplied
This dupe from Collection is only £7.99[/caption]

REAL: Estée Lauder double wear foundation, £39.50, lookfantastic.com

DUPE: Collection Lasting Perfection matte foundation, £7.99, superdrug.com

SAVE: £31.51

WHILE they don’t look alike from the outside, the formula, consistency and staying power of both foundations is pretty similar.

Unfortunately, the Collection only comes in 20 shades versus Estée Lauder’s 60 options, which is a common problem with dupes.

So this money-saver is only worth buying if you can find your match.

LIPSTICK

Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk Lipstick.
Supplied
Charlotte Tilbury’s iconic Pillow Talk is £29[/caption]
L'Oreal Paris Color Riche Satin Lipstick in Beige A Nu.
Supplied
This L’Oreal dupe is only £9.99[/caption]

REAL: Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk, £29, cultbeauty.co.uk

DUPE: L’Oreal Paris Color Riche Satin Lipstick Beige A Nu, £9.99, boots.com

SAVE: £19.01

THE shades of these two lipsticks are virtually identical on the lips and both come in luxurious metallic cases.

However, the Charlotte Tilbury version is noticeably heavier – it’s actually made out of metal, in contrast to the plastic of L’Oreal Paris.

Another difference to note is that the Charlotte Tilbury has a matte finish, while the L’Oreal’s is satin, which makes it more comfortable to wear for long periods.

PRIMER

Milk Makeup Hydro Grip Primer bottle.
Supplied
Milk Makeup Hydro-Grip will set you back £35[/caption]
e.l.f. Power Grip Primer tube and cap.
Supplied
The E.l.f. Power Grip is only £10[/caption]

REAL: Milk Makeup Hydro-Grip, £35, sephora.co.uk

DUPE: E.l.f. Power Grip, £10, boots.com

SAVE: £25

THESE two share a similar green hue, as well as the same long-wearing, mattifying properties.

Milk’s is slightly more hydrating and has a cooling sensation when you apply it.

But otherwise, neither make a visible difference to skin and both do a great job of ensuring make-up goes on smoothly and lasts for hours .

In addition, E.l.f’s is so popular it’s just as hard to get hold of.

ALDI’S DRYER VERSUS DYSON

THE Supersonic hair dryer from Dyson has been my most used beauty tool of the last five years.

I put it into action three or four times a week – and it shows no signs of slowing down.

Dyson’s Supersonic hair dryer will set you back £329.99[/caption]
Woman holding a blue and orange hair dryer.

Aldi’s new Visage Ionic hairdryers is only £14.99[/caption]

But at £329.99, it’s an expensive purchase and for the same price you could buy 22 of Aldi’s new Visage Ionic hairdryers, £14.99 each, and still have change to spare.

So how does it fare?

It definitely looks the part, but the power and results were lacking.

It took twice as long as the Dyson to dry my hair, despite being much hotter (this is true of most affordable hair dryers) and my tresses became frizzy and static in the process, a major pet peeve.

If you have shorter hair, you might find the time difference is negligible.

The other obvious downside is that it’s much louder than the Dyson and doesn’t have nearly as many attachments.

Luckily, I only tend to use the concentrator nozzle, but it comes with just that and a diffuser.

On the plus side, the Aldi hairdryer is smaller than most on the market and super lightweight – even lighter than the Dyson.

Aldi’s tool has three heat settings and two speed options to Dyson’s three of each, and they both have a cool-shot button, too.

It also has a slim handle, which is great for small hands.

The temperature and speed controls are on the handle, so are easy to change without looking, while Dyson’s are on the head of the dryer.

Given the price, I was expecting something akin to a hairdryer on the wall of a hotel bathroom, which it’s certainly not.

I’m extremely impressed with the design and the tech it houses in such a small build.

And it outperforms dryers I’ve tried that are up to five times the price.

Ruben Amorim takes another swipe at Marcus Rashford and tells Man Utd ace he must change or remain in Old Trafford limbo

MARCUS RASHFORD has been told by Ruben Amorim that he must change – or stay in Old Trafford limbo.

The Manchester United boss insists his stand-off with the unhappy striker is “not personal.”

Ruben Amorim has again explained his stance on Rashford[/caption]

But he stresses that no matter what he will not back down after putting the 27-year-old in exile six weeks ago.

Rashford, desperate for a move to Barcelona after saying that he wanted “a new challenge” hasn’t played for 11 games and wasn’t even allowed on the plane to Bucharest for Thursday night’s Europa League clash with FCSB.

Amorim even suggested he would rather pick his 63-year-old goalkeeper coach Jorge Vital than any player who wasn’t giving everything in a pointed reference to the home-grown star.

The tough-talking Portuguese has said that Rashford has not been training well enough even for inclusion in his squad – and, he vows, the situation will stay the same until the front man proves him otherwise.

But having laid down the law again he also opened the door for Rashford to salvage his United career -but only if he shows he really wants to and toes the line.

He declared : “Look at our team and match the profile of the players.

“Imagine a talent like Rashford, our team should be so much better, but he has to change.

“If he changes, we will use a talent like Rashford, but in this moment we have to set some standards.

“We are waiting for Marcus (to see) if he wants it really bad.

“I have nothing against Marcus. It is nothing personal against Marcus.”

Amorim delivered his brutal put-down on Rashford following Sunday’s 1-0 win at Fulham but stressed: “My sentence was about every player who doesn’t give his maximum.

“I didn’t say it was just about Marcus. When I feel it’s the right moment I will put any player to play.

“We are a better team with Marcus Rashford, but until the right moment, I won’t change my mind.

“I already spoke about Marcus. Anything I give you will be a subject.

“It’s the same for every player. Rashford is not selected, that is my choice.

“I will not give you nothing about Marcus Rashford but I’m giving a little bit and I also say we need goals, we need one-on-one players.

Meanwhile Lecce wing back Patrick Dorgu is poised to put pen to paper on a transfer worth £25m plus £4m in add-ons today.

The 20-year-old is scheduled for a medical – and a pay rise that will more than quadruple his £12,700 salary with the Italian club to become Amorim’s first senior signing.

Army transporting power generators across Ireland after Storm Eowyn as thousands still without electricity amid warning

SOLDIERS were tonight transporting new power generators across the country, as they began to arrive from Luxembourg, Poland and Denmark.

It comes as 133,000 still remain without power after Storm Eowyn last week.

The Government response to the storm is under scrutiny, with the Cabinet today told it will be the weekend before the majority of people get their power back.

Retired ESB staff have been drafted in to help get power lines back up and running — with work crews also flown in from the UK, Austria, Finland, the Netherlands and France.

Ireland has also been forced to borrow 17 power generators to temporarily run water mains and other facilities around the country while repairs continue.

Two large generators arrived from Denmark today, with the Defence Forces transporting the equipment around the country and providing logistical support.

A further 15 generators are expected to arrive here over the coming days from Denmark, Poland and Luxembourg, as they respond to an urgent EU call to help Ireland.

The latest figures show that there remains 133,000 people without power and 7,000 people without water.

Some 143 emergency hubs have been set up across 15 counties to enable people to shower, charge phones and keep warm.

The Cabinet were today told that the vast majority of the 133,000 people without power will be hooked back up by the end of the week.

However, there was a warning some homes and businesses in remote areas may be without power well into next week.

Clean-up crews have been spotted carrying out extensive repair works nationwide in some of the worst affected areas.

IMAGES OF WRECKAGE

In Inverin, Galway, a wind turbine was blown to the ground during the gale-force winds.

Off the coast of Connemara, on Mweenish Island, shocking photos showed the wreckage after a roof was blown off a house.

In Clare, a number of caravans were spotted overturned following the high winds, while a pier at Liscannor that collapsed has yet to be repaired.

Officials said this is by far the worst storm experienced by ESB Networks, both in terms of customers losing supply and the scale of damage across the network.

POWER BEING RESTORED

ESB Networks said: “We anticipate that the vast majority of customers who lost power during Storm Eowyn will have supply restored by tomorrow night.

“For the remaining customers, they will have power restored over the course of the following week.”

The Department of Education confirmed that a number of schools had suffered “significant damage” during the worst of Storm Eowyn last week.

Tuam Educate Together National School is among a number that have yet to reopen following the record-breaking winds.

‘TERRIBLE PREDICAMENT’

While power has been restored to all other schools in the Galway town, Tuam ETNS remains without electricity.

Acting principal Fiona Feeney told RTE: “It is just a terrible predicament. Across the road from the school the power has come back, but not for us.

“Every day is a waiting game. It is just very frustrating and I’m sure parents are really upset.

“I feel really bad that all of the other schools are back today, but we are not.”

MAJOR DAMAGE

Several schools in Sligo suffered major damage during the storm, including Mercy College, Summerhill College and Curry National School.

Earlier, Gardai spoke out to reassure people who were cut off as a result of storm damage that every effort was being made to get services back up and running.

They also urged members of the public to check in on elderly or vulnerable relatives and neighbours, and to alert emergency services where necessary.

A Garda spokesperson explained: “The National Emergency Co-ordination Group (NECG) continues to coordinate the national response to the impact of Storm Eowyn across the country.”

HEARTLESS SCAMMERS

Cops also warned that heartless scammers were attempting to dupe people in the aftermath of the storm and urged punters to be vigilant.

They added: “Please be careful with unannounced visitors to your home over the coming days. Legitimate employees of State services will always have appropriate branded clothing and identification, and will always be patient while you satisfy yourself as to a person’s identity.”

Meanwhile, thousands of euro has been raised to support the family of a “bright and loving” man who was killed during Storm Eowyn.

Tragic Kacper Dudek, 20, was killed in Raphoe, Co Donegal, when a tree fell on his car at around 5.30am last Friday morning.

HORROR INCIDENT

The young man was on his way home from his workplace at Zeus in Letterkenny at the time of the horror incident.

The Poland native, who had been raised in Lifford, died at the scene.

His devastated father Artur had spoken to his son on the phone just before his death and had been waiting for him to arrive home.

He told a local priest after the tragic death: “He never came home.”

He is survived by parents Artur and Katarzyna Dudek, younger siblings Karol and Weronika, and his girlfriend Molly.

Kacper’s funeral will take place this morning in St Patrick’s Church in Murlog, Lifford, at 10.30am.

This will be followed by a cremation at Lakelands Crematorium.

When is the Champions League last 16 draw and when do the play-offs take place?

THE expanded Champions League has delighted and confused fans in equal abundance so far this season.

More teams and more matches – plus a league table to contend with – have left many fans wondering what exactly is going on.

Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez celebrating a goal.
AP
Liverpool are already into the hat for the Champions League Round of 16 draw – but have will have to wait to find out who their opponents are[/caption]

There is just one round of matches to play after Wednesday’s fixtures, with all remaining games set to take place on January 29.

But then what?

There will be a draw next week – but with some teams already into the knockout phase, it’s not how it was before.

Here’s everything you need to know about the Champions League knockout draw and stages.

When is the Champions League knockout stage draw?

The main draw for the knockout phase takes place on Friday, February 21.

However, there is ALSO a draw taking place for the knockout phase play-offs.

Under the new league table format, which has 36 teams, the top eight teams in the table are automatically put into the Round of 16 and are seeded.

The bottom eight teams are eliminated from European competition, with no move into the Europa League like in previous years.

The next 16 teams – those that finished between 9th and 24th – then head into the knockout phase play-offs.

The teams that finished 9th to 16th will be seeded and drawn against teams that finished 17th to 24th (unseeded).

The draw for that round of games take place on Friday, January 31.

While Liverpool have already guaranteed qualification, fellow English sides Arsenal, Aston Villa and Man City still have it all to play for.

New Champions League format is a snorefest

By Dan King

UEFA sold the idea of expanding the Champions League from 32 to 36 teams, with each playing eight games instead of six in the opening phase, as a way of creating more competitiveness and excitement.

The biggest clubs would have two matches against their peers, rather than having to wait until the knockout stage to meet.

The smaller clubs would meet teams of a similar level twice and have a chance of tasting victory that was so hard to achieve if you were the bottom seed in a group of four.

Ignoring for a moment the fact that the real motivation was the simple equation of more games = more money, the theory itself already looks flawed.

None of the matches between European giants has delivered a compelling contest yet.

And why would they? At the start of the long season with more matches in it, why would any team with ambitions to win things in the spring, go out all guns blazing in the autumn?

Especially when they know they have six games NOT against big sides to make sure they accrue enough points to qualify at least for the play-off round (and even more games).

There is even less jeopardy than before.

Read the full column on the Champions League format fail and why everyone – including YOU – needs a rethink.

When does the Champions League knockout phase play-offs take place and when is the Round of 16?

Teams that finished in the top eight and automatically reached the Round of 16 have a little bit of a wait on their hands.

After the final league phase game on January 29, the likes of Liverpool and Barcelona will not play their Champions League last 16 games until March.

Those fixtures are scheduled to take place on March 4-5 and 11-12.

For the knockout phase play-offs, there is a slightly shorter wait – those two-legged games take on February 11-12 and 18-19.
