Boy, 3, died in ‘furious’ dog attack at farm after his ‘parents allowed him to wander into pen unsupervised’

A THREE-year-old boy died in a “furious and prolonged” dog attack at a farm after his parents allowed him to wander into a pen unsupervised, a jury heard.

Daniel Twigg was savagely mauled to death at Carr Farm, in Rochdale, Manchester, on May 15, 2022, due to the alleged negligence of his parents Mark Twigg, 43, and Joanne Bedford, 37.

The pair are now on trial at Manchester Crown Court accused of Daniel’s manslaughter.

The prosecution claim the toddler was allowed to enter a dog pen where two large, “dangerous” 50kg dogs – one a Cane Corso called Sid and another Boerboel or Boerboel cross Tiny – were kept.

Daniel entered “alone and unsupervised”, it’s alleged, and “without effective precautions being taken”.

John Elvidge KC, prosecuting, said the dogs, who belonged to the farm owner, were used as guard dog and for breeding and were not family pets.

They were “deliberately kept outside” in enclosed pens, he said, and the jury heard how the RSPCA had warned the dogs were a danger but the warnings were ignored.

While steps were taken to stop them escaping, Mr Elvidge said, “no effective precautions were taken to keep Daniel out’.

CCTV from a neighbour’s property showed Daniel inside the pen at 12.50pm, the jury heard, and he was seen moving around inside for a few moments before disappearing from view.

At the same time, a dog in an adjacent pen became “excited, bouncing up and down in animated fashion”.

The prosecution, Mr Elvidge said, say this “coincides with the beginning of a ferocious and prolonged attack” on Daniel.

The tot suffered catastrophic injuries, principally to his head and neck, which were consistent with the “predatory behaviour of dogs”.

A 999 call was made by Daniel’s mother almost 20 minutes later after he’d been inside the dog pen, the jury heard, and while it’s not known for certain whether both dogs were involved in the attack Sid was the “likely” culprit.

“No-one suggests that these catastrophic events were intended or desired by his parents but this attack and Daniel’s death were utterly foreseeable consequences of negligently allowing Daniel to enter Sid and Tiny’s pen alone and unsupervised,” Mr Elvidge said.

“It is the prosecution case that his parents were aware that Daniel could enter the pen if he was left unsupervised.”

The jury heard how the dog pen, situated at the side of the farmhouse, was accessed through gates secured by a Karabiner clip – rather than a secure lock – that could “easily” be slipped open.

Daniel’s parents had a “long association” with the farm, owned by a Matthew Brown, with Twigg working as an odd job man and Bedford keeping horses there.

The couple, who’ve got two other children, leased the farmhouse from Brown in March 2022 after he’d been remanded to prison when his girlfriend Deniqua Westwood made a complaint to police.

Westwood, who operated a puppy breeding business, moved out and but it was agreed the guard dogs would remain and the couple would look after them.

Twigg was paid £450 to attend to the day-to-day security, running of the farm, and the dogs’  care.

The couple, who also had another eight or nine dogs to look after, including three of their own, stayed on at the farm despite having a home in Blackley, Manchester, when Brown was released on bail, the jury heard.

The pair continued to have responsibility for the dogs over weekends when he was away, with Daniel attacked one such weekend, argued the prosecution.

‘CATASTROPHIC’

Mr Elvidge said the dogs had been kept in “filthy and disgusting conditions” and the couple were aware of concerns raised by the RSPCA and a warning that Daniel “might be bitten”.

And there were a number of incidents involving dogs at the farm escaping, biting people and fighting each other.

Police were also aware that “dangerous” dogs at the farm were being injured and neglected, the jury heard.

It is claimed that RSPCA inspectors had expressed specific concerns about Daniel being around the dogs and mentioned a recent fatal attack involving a small child, but they were “disregarded’ by the couple.

And they were also warned about the dogs being loose and kept locked up in suitable areas.

The RSPCA also told police on March 30 that “something could happen if the dogs started fighting near the child,” Mr Elvidge said, and his parents had been advised to be careful.

The jury also heard how Rochdale Children’s Services visited the farm just three days before the attack and expressed concerns.

These included signs of “neglect” of Daniel and that he was “in danger” from the dogs.

Twigg and Bedford, of Radcliffe, Bury, both deny charges of gross negligence manslaughter and being in charge of a dog that was dangerously out of control.

The trial, due to last three weeks, continues.

Brave Spanish tourist reveals life was ‘turned upside down’ after being raped by Louth man in Dublin on New Year’s Eve

A BRAVE Spanish tourist has revealed how her life was “turned upside down” after she was raped at a New Year’s Eve party in Dublin.

The claim was made by the woman, now 26, after Christopher O’Grady’s legal team apologised at the Central Criminal Court on his behalf for raping the then 19-year-old on January 1, 2019.

O’Grady, 33, from Dundalk, had been found guilty of one count of rape in March. The court also heard that he had accepted the verdict of the jury and “harm was done” to the victim.

A previous court hearing heard how the woman, who had been under the influence of alcohol, had been raped when she was looking for her friend after they became separated.

Although he was due to be sentenced, the case was put back after the victim claimed in her impact statement that she wanted to “meet” O’Grady.

In her victim impact statement, which was read to the court, she said: “Although I don’t know why, I know I want to speak to my attacker in a safe place and ask him why.

“He turned my life upside down and he didn’t see the person behind my body.

“I would like to be able to look him in the eye and ask him what reasons anyone could have to be so cruel to a young woman who, alone and driven by fear, found no other way out than to trust a stranger to help her.

“I want to see if he believes his lies and I want him to witness the pain he has caused, to suffer my pain and see the wounds he’s left on me and to see himself as monstrous as I have seen.”

She also said in her statement: “I am afraid of things that I used to enjoy – like walking alone in the street at night time, going out to parties.

“I carry many painful memories both with myself and around me.
“I have to move forward and I need to close this case.”

She also used her victim impact statement to thank the Gardai, the Rotunda Hospital and the Victim Support Service for their support.

The court heard how the Probation Service has been asked to decide if a meeting is possible.

The case has been adjourned until July 24.

Crystal Palace likely to be handed never-before-seen Uefa penalty if Lyon win appeal against relegation

CRYSTAL PALACE face a unique penalty if Lyon win their appeal against relegation.

The Eagles‘ Europa League place for winning the FA Cup is under threat due to Uefa’s multi-club ownership rules.

John Textor’s role in both Palace and Lyon is the big issue[/caption]

John Textor is selling his 43 per cent share in Palace to New York Jets owner Woody Johnson and also owns Lyon through his Eagle Football group.

And if the French club are successful with their appeal, Palace are likely to be demoted to the Conference League.

Eagles’ chiefs have been in talks with Uefa’s Club Financial Control Body to argue their case and expected a resolution this week.

But Uefa have put their decision on ice awaiting an outcome from Lyon’s appeal.

The Eagles have argued that Textor had no effective control at Palace and that there were no links to Lyon.

He has sold his stake at Selhurst Park and resigned his post in France amid the club’s financial trouble, but Uefa are yet to make a decision.

But that might not satisfy Uefa’s Club Financial Control Body (CFCB)  as it’s understood Textor did not give up his stake by the March 1 deadline.

In a statement on Monday, Uefa said: “The CFCB First Chamber has decided to postpone its assessment of the multi-club ownership case involving Olympique Lyonnais and Crystal Palace.

“This postponement relates to Olympique Lyonnais’ compliance with the settlement agreement concluded with the CFCB First Chamber for its breach of the financial sustainability requirements.

“As part of this settlement, Olympique Lyonnais agreed on an exclusion from the 2025/26 UEFA club competitions should the French authority (DNCG) confirm the club’s relegation to Ligue 2.

“Further details on this multi-club ownership case and this settlement agreement will be communicated in due course.”

For now, Textor’s issues at Lyon have seen the seven-time French champions relegated to Ligue 2.

The American responded to that punishment by resigning his position as president.

Textor – who tried to buy Everton last year – explained his decision to go in a statement.

He also confirmed his interest in buying another English club following the Palace sale.

Textor said: “On a personal level, I am truly looking forward to the reduction of my day-to-day management responsibilities in Europe, so I can focus on markets where we have the full freedom to run our football clubs…to invest, innovate, grow and compete.

“I will focus on Botafogo, Daring Brussels and our next club in England.”

Lyon have appealed against the relegation but will forfeit their place in Europe should they fail.

Flag of principle or fashion statement? Festival crowd flag debate rages & our writers are divided after Kneecap set

KNEECAP performed at the Glastonbury Festival in front of tens of thousands of fans chanting “Free Palestine” over the weekend.

The group’s Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh appeared on stage wearing his trademark Palestinian keffiyeh in front of the capacity crowd, including many people waving Palestinian flags.

However, the issue of political colours in festival crowds has caused controversy.

Over the years there has also been some conflict regarding flags: festival-goers either love them or hate them.

For some it’s a way to make a statement and convey a message to the crowd.

But for critics, they are nothing more than a fashionable way to get noticed.

A number of years ago, Glastonbury organisers actually consulted fans on whether they should implement a ban on flags at the festival after noticing people complaining about them.

Writing in The Irish Sun today, EMMA MOONEY and NICOLA BARDON argue both sides of the coin.

FOR – NICOLA BARDON

Nicola Bardon is in favour of the flags
Collect Through Journalist

A FEW weeks ago I was at Macklemore’s gig in St Anne’s Park in Dublin.

The crowd was awash with colour — Irish flags, Palestinian flags, Bohs jerseys in support of those in Gaza, and many, like myself, wearing the keffiyeh.

I knew I was supporting the right musician and was among the right crowd there and then.

You see in this day and age, it is easy to sit on the fence and say nothing.

That way, you can sit back and see what the outcome is and then claim that’s what you believed all along.

Or despite having millions of followers online, live in fear of what will happen if, God forbid, you say the slaughter of babies is not OK.

But I will not stand for that silence anymore.

According to Al-Jazeera, 62,614 Palestinians have died at the hands of the IDF since October 2023.

That is 11.5 times the population of my hometown.

That is more than the entire population of the county of Carlow. Or Longford. Or Leitrim.

My colleague will use words like ‘virtue signalling’ a phrase used by the far-right or basically anyone who doesn’t understand something and just thinks people who care about other people are ‘woke.’

But let me tell you, when you are watching videos from Gaza every day, babies dying without food, entire families being bombed, kids clamouring to get out of burning buildings, five-year-old Hind Rajab and her family blasted to death in a car that was shot at 335 times by the IDF, we need to do something.

We can show the world where we stand

Nicola Bardon

But we feel powerless. We feel guilty for going to gigs and having a good time when someone across the world, the same age as us, probably has not eaten in days.

So what can we do? We can show the world where we stand. We can show each other where we stand.

If that means looking across St Anne’s Park or Stradbally or Malahide Castle and seeing a pin, a flag, a jersey or hearing a chant of ‘Free, Free Palestine’ to know you are in the right company, then I will wear my keffiyeh every time.

AGAINST – EMMA MOONEY

Woman on a ferry.
Emma Mooney thinks it is ‘little more than accessorised activism’
Garrett White - The Sun Dublin

APPARENTLY a Palestinian flag is the latest must-have trend for some festivalgoers.

Where once it was socks and a bucket hat, it’s now draping yourself in a keffiyeh and hoisting the striped cloth with all the pride of US marines on Iwo Jima.

They were everywhere at Wicklow’s Beyond the Pale.

A Palestine flag makes you look up-to-date and, dare I say it, woke. It suggests that you are “on the right side of history”.

But it’s hard for me to see this as little more than accessorised activism – in other words, virtue signalling.

Is the flag less about Palestine and more about you?

Never was this more obvious than when one camp got their flag up only for one festivalgoer to cry, “it looks lovely”, followed by the inevitable selfies.

Whatever side of this atrocious war you find yourself standing on, such examples of lazy activism is in my view offensive.

Is the flag less about Palestine and more about you?

Emma Mooney

A devastating fight that’s claimed thousands of innocent lives is not an excuse to play dress up.

For me, it’s not protest, it’s performance.

I notice how such people never carry these flags while doing the weekly shop.

It seems it’s more often at highly photographed, ultra-crowded spaces they are donned.

In my opinion, you can’t say ‘free Palestine’ without saying ‘f*** Hamas’.

And it doesn’t change some of their behaviour – raving to techno on ketamine isn’t a form of protest simply because you’ve made a cape out of a Palestinian flag.

Instead, it trivialises a devastating situation and reduces it to festival attire.

But to find such behaviour distasteful is to go against “right think”.

As Peep Show tells us: “If there isn’t room here for people who stand against everything you believe in, what sort of hippy free-for-all is this?”

Real activism doesn’t require you to be at the centre of it – make donations, sign petitions, go to protests, do anything and everything you can to bring about a ceasefire, but for the love of God, take down the flag.

Irish Love Island star becomes dad for first time and reveals baby’s name as he shares ‘beautiful’ first snaps

IRISH Love Island star Rob Lipsett has become a dad for the first time and revealed his baby’s name.

The Dublin native, who appeared on the dating show in 2017, met his wife Linda almost through mutual friends at Rob’s house party almost seven years ago.

The happy couple went on to tie the knot at the Boho Beach Club in Marbella in 2024.

And just nine months later, Linda has given birth to a beautiful baby girl, which they welcomed into the world last Saturday on June 28.

Rob took to Instagram to share heart-melting snaps with their little bundle of joy, who they named Isabelle.

The pair looked happier than ever as they looked down at their new arrival while Linda held her in her arms in the hospital bed.

The fitness guru captioned his post: “Welcome to the world Isabelle Lipsett. 28.6.2025. Our greatest blessing has arrived!”

Rob’s friends and fans flooded the comment section with love and support.

Love Island star Greg O’Shea wrote: “Beautiful. Winning at life.”

RTE star Laura Nolan wrote: “Huge congratulations guys.”

Influencer Louis Cooney said: “Huge congrats guys. She is beautiful.”

Ally commented: “OMG OMG OMG I’m so happy for you guys. Isabelle is such a beautiful name.”

Rob also shared another picture of him holding Isabelle in her car seat while flexing his muscles.

He jokingly added: “17 years of bicep curls. All for this moment.”

The influencer thanks his fans saying: “Appreciate all the kind messages, me and Linda are honestly blown away.

“Grateful doesn’t even cover it!”

VILLA

Rob and Linda relocated to Marbella, Spain, during the pandemic and bought an incredible villa in Puerto Banús villa that came with a surprisingly low price tag.

With property prices through the roof in Ireland, Rob revealed he bought a house abroad because he dreaded getting a “bad deal” back home.

He explained: “Of course I love Ireland, I wanted to buy there first, but I can get a detached villa with four beds and a pool in Marbella versus what I can get an apartment for in Dublin, and you just feel like you’re getting a bad deal.

“I looked at a few apartments two or three years ago in Rathgar and a development in Foxrock, and they are really nice, but I would just feel  I could fly two hours away to a hot country and get a house instead for the same price.

“As much as I love Dublin, the housing market is a bit strange, to say the least, so I feel I’ve got a good deal at the moment, and in a few years hopefully I’ll look at Dublin again.”
