The Dallas Mavericks have been plagued by health issues all season long. Kyrie Irving is done for the 2024-25 due to a torn ACL, while Derrick Lively, Daniel Gafford, and Dante Exum, among others, remain out. However, Anthony Davis has been assigned to the Mavs’ G League squad for rehab.
While the organization has tried to talk Davis out of a return this season due to where the team sits in the Western Conference standings, he reportedly remains “determined” on playing again before the campaign concludes.
Via ESPN’s Tim McMahon:
“[Anthony Davis] is steadfast in his determination to want to return this season, maybe as soon as next week despite the fact there are people within the Mavericks organization that have tried to talk him out of it.”
Davis had an awesome Mavericks debut back on February 8 with 26 points in 31 minutes of action, but he suffered a hip injury that has sidelined him ever since. AD is with the Texas Legends in the G League and has been participating in 5-on-5 drills. There’s no question Anthony Davis is the ultimate competitor who wants to be out on the court, but at this point, it doesn’t feel like it’s worth it.
Dallas is in 10th place with a 33-36 record and will likely make the Play-In Tournament. However, it’s crystal clear they’re not exactly going to be a playoff contender without so many key pieces, most notably Kyrie. While Davis wants to suit up again, the most logical decision is to rest up and get 100% healthy for next season.
The Mavs have been playing numerous games as of late with the league minimum of eight players as the injuries continue to pile up. You can’t blame AD for wanting to ball, but to preserve his health, Dallas should keep him on the sidelines. There’s nothing left to play for.
