Amber Heard and Johnny Depp’s divorce battle was one of the biggest and most highly publicized court trials in Hollywood, and thousands of fans followed their strenuous journey from lawsuit filing up to settlement.

During their defamation trial, Heard alleged her ex-husband of domestic abuse following an opinion article she wrote for the Washington Post. Although she did not mention his name, it was clear that she was talking about her former partner whom she married in 2015.
Amber Heard turned down massive fortune during court battle against Johnny Depp

A 2016 document prepared for Amber Heard and Johnny Depp’s trial was published online, stating that the actress was entitled to half of the actor’s income from his work on Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales because it was done during their marriage. Therefore, the money was considered a community property asset in the state of California.
Amber Heard was entitled to over $20 million dollars from her divorce settlement with Johnny Depp, but turned it down for $7 million.

The amount was unknown at the time since the movie was yet to be released a year later, but the email revealed that Depp made $21 million for the first movie and $33 million for the fourth one. Assuming that the amount was within this range, Heard was reminded that she would be turning down loads of fortune. She responded to the email by stating:
I have independently chosen, on my own free will and volition, to waive my one-half interest and claim in the community’s estate/asset with regard to Johnny’s profit-participation for any and all projects Johnny completed during marriage.
Heard walked away from more than $20 million divorce settlement and chose to take $7 million only which she informed would be donated to charities. All of these happened after the Aquaman star filed for divorce in 2016 after she accused the actor of physical abuse. Four days later, she obtained a temporary restraining order against Depp.
The Edward Scissorhands actor firmly denied the allegations and counter-sued his ex-wife for defamation, a case he won in 2022. The rigorous process of deliberation, as well as the verdict, took a toll on Heard, finally dropping her appeal as she could no longer go on and she had lost faith in the legal system.

Following the exhausting court battle, Depp retained possession of their real estate assets and properties in Los Angeles, Paris, and his private island in the Bahamas. He also got to keep his collection of vintage cars and motorcycles. Heard took their two dogs and a horse. No spousal support for both parties as well (via BBC).
Heard choosing not to take half of Depp’s back-end movie deals demonstrated that she no longer wanted to be associated with him or his money. The actress has decided to move on and live a quiet life in Spain, although she confessed that she’s not retiring from acting.
In 2023, she starred in the thriller film In the Fire which she was also an executive producer. She also appeared in James Wan’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom in a reduced role.
