Michael C. Hall is set to reprise his iconic role as Dexter Morgan in the upcoming Dexter: Resurrection. And the actor appears to have fully embraced his inner Dark Passenger, as he came up with the idea to further expand the lore following New Blood.
New Blood marked the first revival of the Showtime hit after its original eight-season run concluded in 2013. Though it received a massive response, much like the original series finale, its ending proved underwhelming. And Hall recently discussed how this controversial conclusion ultimately led to the development of the new series.
Michael C. Hall revealed the inspiration behind Dexter: Resurrection
In the new Emmy Magazine cover story, Michael C. Hall revealed how he, the show creator, and producers developed plans for a new Dexter series following the underwhelming ending of New Blood.

“I said, ‘I know this is crazy, but what if that gunshot didn’t actually kill him?’” Hall recalled suggesting during an early conversation. Hall also discussed potential directions for the series’ revival with showrunner Clyde Phillips and network executives.
And they were quickly on board. Soon, plans to bring Dexter Morgan back to life were underway. The actor shared during the interview,
I spoke to Clyde Phillips about it, then [senior creative advisor for Showtime Networks] Gary Levine, and the next thing I knew, ideas were swirling around, and it gained its own momentum.
Hall also admitted being compelled by the concept of Dexter surviving and finally becoming the person he’s always wanted to be, someone who fully embraces his dark side in a kind of new awakening.

“I became increasingly compelled by the idea of Dexter surviving that trauma and maybe finding… a new lease on life,” he said. “A new access to a sense of himself that he’d longed for for years but had never quite managed to find.”
And with that vision, showrunner Clyde Phillips began crafting a story that would bring back the vigilante killer in full force, with Dexter Morgan ready to return in his kill suit, possibly darker and more self-aware than ever before.
Michael C. Hall also considered having an alternate ending for Dexter: New Blood
During his conversation for the Emmy Magazine cover story, Michael C. Hall also reflected on the underwhelming finale of Dexter: New Blood. The limited series ended with Dexter being shot by his son, Harrison, after breaking his long-held code by killing Officer Logan.
Despite efforts to provide a more fitting conclusion than the original series finale, many fans were once again left disappointed by what they saw as an unsatisfying end to the character’s journey.

Hall revealed that after the finale aired, he even joked about creating an alternate ending, assuming that Dexter’s story had truly come to a close. However, he still had the idea that it was not the end for the iconic TV character.
Dexter: Resurrection is now set to pick up after the events of New Blood, following his renewed journey, and this time, he may be more unleashed than ever.
Dexter: Resurrection is set to premiere on July 11, 2025, on Paramount+ with Showtime.
