If You’re Copying Halo, At Least Do It Right: Helldivers 2 Can’t Create The Illuminate And Forget a Fan-favorite Covenant Race

Let’s be honest; we all know that Helldivers 2 borrows a lot from the Halo universe. Sure, it’s not a one-on-one copy. However, we’ve seen developer Arrowhead taking a number of thematic and gameplay elements from the Halo games and using them to craft its own unique title.

One of the most obvious areas where we can see Helldivers 2 borrowing from Halo‘s playbook is the Illuminate faction. It’s a take on the fan-favorite Covenant alliance that’s been known to wreak havoc on humanity and Spartans. However, it’s quite mind-boggling that Arrowhead didn’t go all into this idea and bring the most terrifying Covenant race.

Helldivers 2 has fumbled hard by not properly copying Halo

One of the best things about the Covenant in Halo was its diversity. If you think that it didn’t play a role in the alliance’s dominance, you’re wrong. The fact that it was built up of a number of alien species, who all had unique strengths and personalities, helped Covenant put up a fight against humanity.

What was the most powerful warrior class among the Covenant? Well, it’s undoubtedly the Sangheili, also known as Elites. The faction is known for its battlefield powers, thanks to their agility, strength, and tactical intelligence. Seriously, Sangheili were the UNSC’s worst nightmares.

Among this faction, the most lethal force was the Sealth Sangheili. They could camouflage, which made them invisible. This allowed them to stalk their targets and strike them down. The faction is known for using the energy sword, a weapon that can wreck even the most armored Spartans in an instant.

It’s been roughly two months since the introduction of the Illuminate in Helldivers 2. As we all know, the faction has an uncanny resemblance to Covenant’s elites, weapons, and tactics. It’s clear that Arrowhead was heavily influenced by Halo‘s energy sword wielders.

However, the Illuminate doesn’t have its own version of Sangheili. Seriously, where are the tactical warriors who make every battle feel like a life-and-death situation? If Helldivers 2 is really pushing to learn from Halo, it should have brought the energy-sword-wielding warriors that would have struck fear into the hearts of players.

The Illuminate presented Arrowhead with the perfect opportunity to bring a faction that forced gamers to rethink their combat strategies beyond just simple shooting.

Helldivers 2 has a brand-new crossover on the way

While Helldivers 2 dropped the ball with the introduction of the Illuminate, it seems like the game wants to make it up with the next updates and even plans for a special crossover.

As reported by GamesRadar, when the developer Sephez was asked about the future of crossover events in Helldivers 2, it was revealed that Arrowhead is still in the early stages of planning something new. The developer hasn’t shared any other details, which leaves fans wondering which popular franchise could be coming to the game soon.

Some believe that the next crossover might be with Warhammer 40k, as there was a leaked silhouette of a melee weapon that resembles Chainsword from the franchise.

It won’t be the first time we see a crossover in Helldivers 2. Arrowhead has previously partnered up with Killzone 2, bringing various weapons and armor pieces inspired by Sony’s iconic FPS series.

Alongside these crossover updates, Arrowhead has introduced a number of new updates in recent weeks. These patches have brought balancing adjustments, quality-of-life changes, and bug fixes. With the tease that another crossover is on the cards, Helldivers 2 gamers now have even more reasons to spread democracy.

With that said, do you think The Illuminate in Helldivers 2 needs a Sangheili-like enemy type? Let us know in the comments below
