Butte County Extends Humboldt Road Closure to Enhance Safety and Recreation

BUTTE COUNTY, Calif. – The Butte County Board of Supervisors has voted to extend the closure of Humboldt Road east of Chico, a measure initially implemented in 2020 to enhance safety and prevent illegal activities.

The decision, made following a joint recommendation from the Department of Public Works and the City of Chico, maintains the ban on vehicular traffic on certain portions of Humboldt Road. This strategy was first introduced to curb illicit activities in the area. The road closure had previously been extended in May 2022 and again in August 2023. With the latest decision, the road will remain closed until September 10, 2026.

Tod Kimmelshue, the Butte County Supervisor for District 4, noted, “We extended the temporary closure to vehicular traffic on portions of Humboldt Road for an 18-month period. We can continue to extend this closure five more times, each for 18 months.”

In addition to deterring unauthorized activities, the closure has opened up space for recreational activities such as hiking and biking, which have seen growing interest in the region.
