“Wesley was going crazy”: Ryan Reynolds Wasn’t the Only Actor Who Had Problems With Wesley Snipes in Blade: Trinity

Sometimes, the tales that unfold off-screen are much more dramatic than the ones captured in the film, and this holds for Blade: Trinity. The infamous third installment in the Blade franchise was plagued by chaos during its production, and a lot of it was allegedly due to Wesley Snipes.

His supposed clashes with Ryan Reynolds are only one piece of the puzzle. So, what really happened behind the scenes of this Marvel disaster? Let’s find out through what the actors have said in the past.

Patton Oswalt’s hilarious yet shocking account of Wesley Snipes’ antics during Blade: Trinity

Patton Oswalt is the only artist who recounted the events of Blade: Trinity’s filming in the most hilarious way possible. The actor-comedian had a small role in the film, but he became the most vocal source about the behind-the-scenes anecdotes and did not hold back on The Pete Holmes Show.

The fact that that movie exists puts it above Citizen Kane, the fact that they, with all the craziness that went down, we were in Vancouver and Wesley Snipes was going crazy and he wouldn’t come out of his trailer and you’d walk by his trailer and this wall of pot stench would just like, woah, would kind of push you to the side.

He would only answer to the name Blade, you couldn’t call him, and after a while he resorted to just to just give, he would communicate with Post-Its, he would give to the director, and each one he would sign ‘Blade,’

While Oswalt delivered these stories with comedic flair, it paints a picture of how the production was disorganized. Moreover, he also admitted that the film itself was disastrous, but he still rates it highly because they managed to create it in the first place with everything that happened on the set.

The feud between Ryan Reynolds and Wesley Snipes

Patton Oswalt’s account is only a glimpse because the feud between Ryan Reynolds and Wesley Snipes is full-blown drama. The former played vampire hunter Hannibal King in Blade: Trinity, and in an interview with IGN, he recalled his experience of working with the seasoned method actor.

There’s a moment in the movie where I look up at Jessica and I swear to God, I didn’t even know the cameras were rolling anymore and I say, ‘He hates me, doesn’t he?’ And she’s like, ‘Yeah.’ I’m just saying this about my relationship as Ryan Reynolds to this guy, and it works.

According to reports, Snipes referred to Reynolds as “the cracker” and dismissed his co-stars in general (via The Independent). So their animosity seemingly extended beyond just creative differences. Director David S. Goyer described the production as “tortured” and revealed that no one who worked on the project was happy with the final product.

From Wesley Snipes’ method-acting antics to his feud with Ryan Reynolds, the film was a masterclass in dysfunction. But it also brings up the issue of actors who overly commit to method acting, as there have been several such cases when their actions have disturbed co-stars and other professionals on the set.

You can watch Blade: Trinity on Prime Video.
