Suits LA Won’t Ditch Its Frustrating Tactic for the Entirety of 1st Season – Show Creator Reveals – “Four, maybe five, scenes…per episode”

Spoiler Alert !!!
Article contains spoilers for Suits LA Episode 1

Suits LA‘s first episode has dropped on NBC and fans are divided over the legal drama from the Suits universe. While some are interested to see where Stephen Amell’s Ted Black goes from here, others complained that it does not carry the same punch as Aaron Korsh’s original show.

One issue that fans noticed was the awkwardly color-graded flashback scenes that often broke the continuity of the current story. Unfortunately for fans, Korsh has shared that these flashback sequences will be a constant in all the episodes of the first season of the show.

Suits LA creator reveals the flashback scenes will continue throughout Season 1

The very first episode of Stephen Amell‘s Suits LA begins with a flashback. Amell’s Ted Black was a prosecutor in New York before he moved to Los Angeles and started a private firm. However, he has a lot of baggage from his NY days which is shown through these flashbacks.

The first episode carries an interesting plot point in his current firm in LA, but the episode makes frequent time jumps to Ted Black’s past. Many fans found this very annoying and distracting in the episode. They wouldn’t be happy to know that this trend will continue throughout the first season of the series.

During an interview with TVLine, creator Aaron Korsh shared that the first season had too many flashback scenes. According to Korsh, these scenes help to paint a picture of Ted’s transition from NY prosecutor to LA private practice. He also shared that each episode of the first season is set to have 4 to 5 flashback sequences.

However, the creator also noted that the first season would wrap up Ted Black’s New York storyline in the first season itself. These scenes would explain Ted’s investigation into the mobster mentioned at the beginning of the series, Eddie’s fate, and his relationship with his father. Korsh shared:

[There are] four, maybe five, scenes of flashbacks per episode, and we’re, basically, telling the story of what happened in Ted’s last year in New York. What happened with investigating [the mobster] and trying to put him away, and what happened to Eddie, and what happened with his father. And yeah, we are going to try to wrap that up in the first season.

This disruptive tactic might turn out to be a problem for the series. Fans would rather love to see Amell’s journey in LA in the new series. The first episode built a compelling story in the present at the Black Lane law firm with Amell’s Ted and Josh McDermitt’s Stuart Lane going against each other.

The series begins with a flashback sequence in NY where a witness in a trial against a mobster gets blown up in front of Ted Black. In the current scenario, Ted has moved to LA and started the law firm, Black Lane, with Stuart Lane. The law firm is in the midst of a merger and Stephen Amell’s character is initially shown to have an anti-criminal defense stance.

There is also a competition between two key attorneys in the firm Erica Rollins and Rick Dodson, played by Lex Scott Davis and Bryan Greenberg. They are both vying for the head of the entertainment division, with Ted supporting Rick whom he considers his protégé. However, Erica gains the position after bringing in celebrity client Dylan Pryor.

The first big twist arrives in the episode when Stuart secretly poaches Black Lane attorneys to his own new firm. After Stuart’s betrayal, Rick too leaves Ted for Stuart after he is offered the entertainment head position at the new firm. Erica remains at Black Lane, showing her loyalty to Ted.

By the end of the episode, Ted changes his ways and delves into criminal defense, even stealing a murder suspect client that Stuart was earlier representing. The episode ends with a final twist. Throughout the episode, we see interactions between Ted and Eddie. However, it is revealed that Eddie has been dead for years and that he was part of Ted’s trauma.

Fans will have to catch new episodes of Suits LA on NBC every Sunday and the episodes will be made available for streaming on Peacock.
