Akira Toriyama Had No Intention of Making Bulma and Vegeta a Couple Until a Last-Minute Decision Out of Boredom Changed His Mind

The recent Dragon Ball DAIMA series by Akira Toriyama has become popular for a lot of things, but the one thing that fans have expressed the most interest in is the display of Vegeta and Bulma’s relationship within the story. From Vegeta being protective towards Bulma to Bulma controlling Vegeta, all these aspects have certainly shed light on their relationship as husband and wife.

The reason why Dragon Ball fans are so attracted to finding out more about Vegeta and Bulma is because Toriyama never really focused much on the love angle of the couples within the series. Thus, there has always been an intrigue among fans about what a relationship between the Prince of Saiyans and the genius scientist of Capsule Corp would look like.

However, what fans don’t know is that Toriyama created the bond between the two out of sheer boredom. It was recently revealed that when Trunks was being introduced within the story, Toriyama had no backstory for him. Thus, as an improvisation, the Dragon Ball creator decided to marry Vegeta to Bulma and introduce Trunks through this relationship.

Vegeta and Bulma’s uncanny relationship in Dragon Ball

When the Dragon Ball series started and characters like Vegeta were introduced, no one would have guessed in a million years that Vegeta would one day have a proper family, and that too with Bulma, who already was in a relationship with Yamcha. In fact, the two didn’t have any kind of proper connection with each other for a long time.

However, as the Dragon Ball story progressed, Vegeta and Bulma started developing a bond that mainly comprised anger and rage towards each other. Still, there was a soft spot that both of them had. This was the moment when Trunks was introduced, and he made the shocking revelation that he was the son of Vegeta and Bulma, confirming their relationship.

This was the most unexpected move from Akira Toriyama, and while it was shocking, it made sense in some ways. Thus, when the Buu Saga started in Dragon Ball, both of them appeared as a couple, and their relationship got a new definition. Since then, they have been together, and Dragon Ball DAIMA helped fans understand how the two act as husband and wife.

Akira Toriyama created Vegeta and Bulma’s relationship because of boredom

While fans find the uncanny bond between Vegeta and Bulma in Dragon Ball DAIMA interesting, what they don’t know is that Toriyama wrote them as a couple only because he wanted to add a backstory to Trunks’s character. This was recently revealed by the editors of Dragon Ball, Kazuhiko Torishima, Yu Kondo, and Fuyuto Takeda.

In an episode of the KosoKoso podcast (which was translated and shared by @Venixys on X), the Dragon Ball editors pointed out that when Trunks was first introduced in the Dragon Ball storyline, Toriyama had no idea how he was going to make sense out of the character. As he was not a long-term character at the time, Toriyama decided to make the connection between him, Vegeta, and Bulma.

He came up with a plan that Vegeta will marry Bulma and the two will have Trunks as a kid. However, this dynamic worked so well within the story that Toriyama decided to make it permanent and wrote the narrative around it. It eventually became one of the biggest aspects of the Dragon Ball storyline.

Dragon Ball is available to watch on Crunchyroll.
