Scotland braced for return of snow after mild March spell as weather map reveals flurries THIS WEEK

SCOTS are bracing for the return of snow following days of mild weather.

After basking in glorious 17C temperatures this weekend, the mercury is set to plummet to as low as -4C.

Parts of the country will also see a smattering of flurries with widespread frost expected.

Weather maps from WXCharts show the white stuff is predicted to hit parts of the Highlands and Edinburgh.

In the north of the country, up to 12 inches of snow could fall by Thursday at 6am.

In Edinburgh and the east of Scotland, residents could see several inches hit the ground.

This is despite the start of meteorological spring on Saturday, March 1.

Last Thursday, The Botanical Gardens in Edinburgh reached 16.8C which is the highest on record this early in the year, experts said.

But Met Office forecaster Marco Petagna warned: “Winter’s not finished with us yet. There will be a complete reversal from a very mild southerly flow to a cold northerly, with a big change in temperatures.

Meanwhile, BBC weather experts added: “Wednesday will be breezy and chillier with mostly cloudy skies and the odd shower across the east and north, wintry possibly down to lower levels at times.

“A few bright spells are still possible in the south. Generally cloudy with the risk of isolated showers on Thursday, bringing snow mainly on the high ground. Gentle winds. Turning increasingly dry and bright on Friday.”

They added: “It’s best not to pack away the winter wardrobe quite yet – next week temperatures are set to drop.

“Northerly winds will develop bringing colder air to all parts with some wintry showers. Daytime temperatures will fall just below the seasonal average and night-time frosts will return.”

Weathermen said chills this week will be followed by Atlantic showers, then sunny sizzles as the clocks go forward on March 30.

Last month, an Atlantic storm arrived with high winds barrelling in from the west.

Gusts reached 60mph inland, with 70mph recorded on the west coast and on higher ground.

A yellow weather alert covered the whole country from 6am until 6pm.
