“It’s a reverse Robert Downey Jr. situation”: Marvel Changes the Lives of the Original Avengers but It May Have Backfired for One Actor

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is one of the biggest and most successful franchises, consisting of movies, series, short films, digital series, and literature. Actors including Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, and others played a significant role in setting up a solid foundation for the franchise, which started with Iron Man in 2008. The MCU’s Phase Six will begin with The Fantastic Four: First Steps and conclude with Avengers: Secret Wars.

The MCU’s multiverse saga, which began with Avengers: Endgame in 2019, went on to inspire other studios to adopt a very similar shared universe. Ardent fans of Marvel Comics are always enthusiastic about new projects, and the actors who have worked in the Marvel movies since their inception have a dedicated and loyal fan base with their popularity unmatched. However, one actor’s fans pointed out who might have had a reverse effect.

Did Marvel projects affect Mark Ruffalo’s career?

Mark Ruffalo is one of the most versatile actors of his generation and is widely known for his work in romantic comedies like 13 Going on 30, Just Like Heaven, and more. The actor gained critical acclaim and international recognition after he starred as Bruce Banner, a.k.a. The Hulk, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2012. He took over the role after Kevin Feige decided not to bring back Edward Norton, who portrayed the character in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk.

Ruffalo was highly appreciated for his work as The Hulk and grew to be one of the fan favorites in the franchise. It has been known that Ruffalo’s Hulk appearances haven’t had Lou Ferrigno’s cameo, who played the first live-action version of the Hulk in the 1978 TV series The Incredible Hulk.

The actor has recently been a part of critically acclaimed movies, including Poor Things, All the Light We Cannot See, and the very recent Mickey 17. Even though the movies and his performances have been highly appreciated, his characters haven’t been quite established. One of the fans wrote,

The MCU really did a number on Ruffalo’s image because he actually is one of the best actors of his generation. It’s a reverse Robert Downey Jr. situation.

Another user wrote, ‘I think he’s great as the Hulk! It’s a shame they never made a Hulk movie with him. That’s money on the table.’ Fans also noted that Ruffalo’s image isn’t talked about much, and they believe it should change. Robert Downey Jr.‘s career sky-rocketed after he starred as Tony Stark/Iron Man in the Marvel movies.

At the world premiere of the movie, Mark Ruffalo spoke to CNN and described his character as an amalgamation of every petty dictator that the world has seen over the last century, all rolled into one. He added,

Add a little bit of, you know, Christian nationalist in there or religious zealot in there, and you have Kenneth Marshall. They all end the same way. I mean, it might be brutal on the way to getting there, but all of these guys end the same way. It’s not sustainable.

The actor noted that he thinks that it’s one of the nicer things about the movie that, eventually, the people always win. He added that it takes some time and some suffering, but people have to remember that the good guys always win and the bad guys always lose. He mentioned that the dictators are too selfish, self-centered, arrogant, and stupid.

Mark Ruffalo, however, shared at the world premiere that people can take whatever they want to take from the movie, but that’s the message that he takes from it—that good guys always win. He concluded that it was a lot of fun to play the character.

Mickey 17 is out in cinemas.
