NINE people have been rushed to hospital after a fire broke out at an apartment building in Wicklow.
An alarm was raised early this morning, at around 5am, that a blaze had broke out in one of the upstairs apartments on Lower Dargle Road in Bray.
Emergency services from Bray, Dun Laoghaire and Greystones all rushed to the scene as Gardai assisted in closing off the road.
Nine people in total from the building were treated by paramedics at the scene for smoke inhalation.
They were all later taken to hospital.
Gardai said in a statement: “Gardaí assisted local fire services at the scene of a fire at a residential premises on the Lower Dargle Road in Bray, Co. Wicklow this morning, Monday 10th March 2025.
“Emergency services were alerted to the fire at approximately 5:00am.
“No serious injuries have been reported however eight residents of the building were conveyed to hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.
“The fire has since been extinguished and the scene is preserved for technical examination.”
Gardai also confirmed that enquiries are ongoing.
Local Sinn Fein TD John Brady has praised firefighters for rescuing the nine injured people.
He said on X: “Really bad fire in an apartment block on the lower Dargle Road in Bray overnight.
“Firefighters rescued 9 people from the blaze, all gone to hospital. No extremely serious injuries.
“Well done to the firefighters, heroic stuff.”
One resident in the apartment building and has lived there for 10 years told RTE that the entire building is “homeless now basically”.
Donal said: “I saw blue flashing lights, the ambulance (man) asked us to leave the building.
“There was an awful lot of smoke, a lot of black smoke spilling out of the back of the building.
“It’s the end of an era for this building.”
He added that he had seen two men leaning out of windows upstairs before being helped down by firefighters.
Donal believes they were two of the people who were treated at the scene and taken to hospital.
