I nearly died after taking weight-loss jab Mounjaro… I was rushed to hospital with ‘life-threatening’ symptoms

A MUM has told how she nearly died after taking weight-loss jab Mounjaro.

Meghan Turner took the drug for 15 weeks before her health deteriorated and she was rushed to hospital.

The healthcare assistant was told her respiratory system was failing and that her phosphate levels were at “life-threatening levels” before receiving critical care that she said saved her life.

Speaking to The Sun, 35-year-old Meghan said she wanted to highlight the potentially deadly side effects of the injections.

She said: “I nearly left my kids without a mother for the sake of losing a few stones.

“I work in the medical profession and would say that I’m cautious.

“But the side effects of taking these drugs are not being talked about.

“I nearly died. If I hadn’t made it to the hospital in time and had that level of care, I’ve no doubt I’d be dead now.

“My kids would have lost their mum.

“I’ve never seen my mum cry and she was sobbing by my bed. It isn’t worth the risk.”

About half a million Brits take weight-loss drugs.

That number is expected to double in the next year as the NHS rolls out Mounjaro.

It suppresses the appetite, making people feel fuller for longer.

Weight-loss injections are licensed for patients with type 2 diabetes and to assist with weight loss for those who are clinically obese — with a Body Mass Index of 30 or over.

One jab is administered each week but the duration is dependent on a person’s weight.

The drugs can be lawfully supplied only when prescribed by a practitioner — like a doctor, nurse or a pharmacist-independent prescriber.

But many people are buying them through online pharmacies with insufficient checks.

Last month, it was revealed fat jabs had been linked to 82 deaths across the country.

Meghan, from Lewes, East Sussex, began taking Mounjaro after it was prescribed by online pharmacy My London Pharmacy in May 2024.

She had a BMI over 30 and weighed 16st 5lb.

But after 15 weeks — despite losing four stone — she started to feel unwell.

She added: “I had lost weight but the impact on my health was scaring me.

‘I’M GOING TO DIE’

“I couldn’t bring myself to drink a sip of water.

“I’d look at it knowing I had to drink but couldn’t force it down.

“I stopped taking Mounjaro and as soon as I felt my natural hunger come back I started to go downhill.

“It was less than two days after coming off it and I woke up and I knew I was in trouble.

“I told my mum to take me to the hospital and I started struggling to breathe. I said, ‘I am going to die.’ ”

After arriving at Brighton Hospital on October 22, Meghan was so unwell she could not talk to doctors.

She added: “I was in a blind panic.

“I couldn’t breathe and the nurses were desperately trying to get blood from me to see what was wrong.

“Once I was stabilised I was too embarrassed to say I was on Mounjaro.”

The Sun had approached Mounjaro maker Eli Lilly for comment.
