James Gunn’s New Superman Post Leaves Netizens in Splits

After a decade of dark and gloomy Superman, followed by the overused trope of Superman-esque characters with an evil twist, we’re finally harkening back to the Superman we love, aka Clark Kent. Beneath all that Kryptonian strength, it’s Clark Kent’s humanity that makes him special, an aspect that hasn’t been fully realized on the big screen since Christopher Reeve’s Superman.

Fortunately, James Gunn, an admirer of the classic Superman and what he stands for, is taking the character back to its roots. The DC head is also not shying away from sharing tidbits that further lean toward the movie’s fun side, including an amusing post highlighting Clark and Jimmy’s dynamic.

In the now-defunct DCU, Jimmy Olsen dropped dead within the opening minutes of Dawn of Justice, and fans never got to experience his iconic dynamic with Clark from comics. Superman, on that front, is already proving to be promising, whether it’s the glimpses from the trailers or Gunn’s social media posts, including one that played on the joke surrounding the distinction between Clark and Supes.

Contrary to the DCEU, where the distinction between Clark and Superman was almost non-existent, the forthcoming release has already drawn this line, similar to Christopher Reeve‘s Superman.

James Gunn further highlighted the difference between the two in a humorous post, involving Skyler Gisondo’s Jimmy and David Corenswet‘s Clark, which sees the latter acting confused after Clark takes off his glasses.

In response, one fan responded “The most stupid disguise in the world…”, given the absurdity of the disguise, which Corenswet manages to pull off, followed by other comments, reading “You don’t think”, and “Hahahahaha, that’s great,” said another user.

James Gunn almost took the Zack Snyder route with Superman’s trunks

Since the first reveal of Corenswet’s Superman, which drew some mixed reactions, the new suit has steadily grown on fans, especially the trunks, which were absent in the last big-screen adaptation.

Interestingly, Zack Snyder did attempt to go the trunk route with his version, but wasn’t able to make it work, and Gunn, who consulted with the BVS director beforehand, too, intended to go the not-trunks route at one point.

Gunn said (via Rotten Tomatoes):

One of the biggest questions was, were we going to have trunks, or were we going to not have trunks? I talked to Zack Snyder, who was like, “You know, I tried a billion different versions with the trunks, and I couldn’t get there.” And I was feeling exactly the same way. I went in with David — he tried it not trunks, and he tried it trunks — and I was still going to go with not trunks.

Corenswet, on the flip side, insisted on the trunks, and Gunn, who grew up with the red trunks, eventually opted to go that route, and with a month ahead of the movie’s release, things are looking bright and hopeful, as it should be.

Superman will hit theatres on 11 July 2025 (USA).
