John Cena appeared in front of the WWE fans for the first time after turning heel on the March 17 episode of WWE RAW in Brussels, Belgium. The 16-time WWE champion was showered with hate as he made his way into the squared circle.
Cena then proceeded to deliver one of the best promos in the history of the promotion but there was a single problem. Cena’s speech and then his verbal feud with Cody Rhodes took more time than WWE expected, affecting the post-match angle between Jey Uso and Gunther.
How did John Cena’s promo affect Jey Uso’s feud with Gunther?
Cena’s promo took more than 30 minutes and because of that WWE had to reduce the duration of further matches. Dakota Kai bested Ivy Nile in just 3 minutes and LWO defeated The Creeds in just 6 minutes. But, fans were baffled the most as they witnessed Jey Uso defeat Austin Theory in just 29 seconds.
This resulted in the post-match feud between Uso and Gunther lasting longer than the match itself. Which was not WWE’s initial plan. According to Sportskeeda’s Backstage Pass podcast, Uso vs Theory should have lasted at least 11 minutes but had to be shortened.
“This match was spaced out for 11 minutes last night. I don’t know if Cena drawing out the opening of the show affected it, I know it affected other things on the show.”
Jey Uso is supposed to take on Gunther at a main-event bout in WrestleMania 41. Gunther vowed to make Uso’s life miserable for ten weeks before their showdown at WrestleMania. This attack on Uso by Gunther after his win against Theory is a testament to this threat.
Things tend to have backfired for Gunther as Uso quickly stood his ground after struggling initially to counter Gunther’s surprise attack. Uso went on to snatch the WWE championship belt from Gunther and waved it around as Gunther stood helplessly.
Uso finally went on to throw the belt at Gunther giving him a taste of how brutal and dangerous he can be.
Gunther reveals the virtue that will help him defeat Jey Uso
In an interview, Gunther opened up on his WrestleMania opponent and revealed the virtue he believes to be crucial against Uso.
“Resiliency? The only one resilient here is me because I uphold the highest standard for myself and the World Heavyweight Championship,”
Gunther further claimed that the match would be the biggest bout of Jey Uso’s career but the case would not be the same for him as he had previously faced better and stronger opponents.
WWE fans will be glued to their screens on the day of WrestleMania to witness which way the tide will turn and whether Gunther will be able to defend his title or we will get a new WWE champion.
