One of the greatest characters in the history of anime, Itachi Uchiha from Masashi Kishimoto’s Naruto, has been a fan favorite since the beginning of the series. From his character development to his fighting style, everything was absolutely brilliant about Itachi, and by creating him, Kishimoto guaranteed the success of his masterpiece.
One aspect of Itachi’s character that fans absolutely love is his Sharingan, which is without a doubt one of the most powerful Sharingans, and he has proved it multiple times. Also, the fact that Itachi keeps them activated almost entirely throughout the series was one of the most intriguing developments of his character within the narrative.
The real reason behind Itachi continuously activating his Sharingan was never officially revealed in Naruto. However, a small detail about Sarada Uchiha, Itachi’s niece and one of the Sharingan users from Boruto, might have just given a perfect explanation that links it all with Itachi’s eyesight, which got worse by the end.
Itachi consistently kept his Sharingan activated
It won’t be a stretch to say that Itachi Uchiha is one of the best-written characters in Naruto and probably the entire anime and manga industry. The development that he went through in the story was filled with unbearable pain and suffering, but no one was ready for the revelation of his biggest secret within the Naruto storyline.

What made him even more special was the fact that he had his Sharingan consistently activated, which required a huge amount of Chakra and a lot of capabilities as a Uchiha. However, Masashi Kishimoto never really explained how or for what reason Itachi was using his Sharingan for simple activities that could have been done with normal eyes.
Still, fans came up with quite a few speculations behind Itachi’s actions. One such speculation pointed out that because Itachi was a spy, he needed to be vigilant of his surroundings and make sure nobody jumped him. Another speculation was that his Sharingan looked cool with his character design, thus Kishimoto made sure that it stayed activated whenever Itachi made an appearance in Naruto.
One detail about Sarada explained the reason behind Itachi’s Sharingan
While the Naruto storyline never gave a logical explanation behind Itachi’s need to keep his Sharingan activated consistently, its sequel spin-off series, Boruto, managed to make things clear for the fans. The story did this through Sarada’s character, who wears glasses despite having a Sharingan, which proves that her normal eyesight is a little weak.
However, whenever she activates her Sharingan, she removes her glasses and lets her ability take control. Just like Sarada, Itachi also had weak eyesight, which became even worse as he used his Mangekyo Sharingan.

On top of all that, Itachi was also suffering from a disease in Naruto which killed him in the end, when he was battling with his brother Sasuke.

Thus, it is safe to assume that Itachi’s Sharingan worked as glasses for his worsening eyesight and helped him with clear vision in Naruto. It might not be his biggest flex within the story, but the fact that he was able to maintain it for so long speaks about the capabilities of one of the greatest Uchihas to have ever lived in Naruto.
Naruto and Boruto are currently available to watch on Hulu.
