Eiichiro Oda Reveals a Big One Piece Secret: Kaido’s Enemy Turned Friend Hanafuda is Ulti’s Father

Among the many One Piece arcs that fans have seen over the years, the Wano arc is considered to be one of the greatest. It is also the biggest arc in the series, with over 195 episodes in the anime and 149 chapters in the manga, but still, there are many aspects of the arc that have been left incomplete by Eiichiro Oda because of the central storyline.

From Zoro’s lineage to the details about King’s race, Oda has left out many details that fans hope to discover in the future of One Piece. However, it looks like fans won’t have to wait for so long, as the One Piece mangaka has already started giving answers about some of it through his widely popular SBS column, which provides additional data about the One Piece storyline.

Among the many questions answered by Oda in the latest SBS volume, one covered the history of Ulti and Page, the members of the infamous Tobiroppo of the Beast Pirates. The One Piece creator made the startling revelation that Ulti and Tobiroppo were children of Hanafuda, the former warlord of the sea who was taken down by Ace.

Eiichiro Oda reveals the relationship between Hanafuda, Ulti, and Page One

Ulti and Page One were the brother-sister duo of the Tobiroppo who faced Usopp and Nami during the battle of Onigashima in One Piece. They were quite strong and had the powers of the ancient Zoan Devil Fruits that literally turned them into dinosaurs. While Ulti was defeated by Nami, Page One was taken down by Big Mom because they burned down her favorite town in Wano.

According to the leaks of SBS volume 111, which is scheduled to be released on March 4, 2025, Eiichiro Oda was asked about the lineage of Ulti and Page One and whether or not they were connected to Hanafuda, considering the parallel of ancient Zoan Devil Fruits.

The One Piece manga creator confirmed that Hanafuda was the father of Ulti and Page One.

He even revealed that he left them in Kaido’s care because he had faith in Kaido, and the two had formed an alliance. Not only that, but even his habit of collecting ancient Zoan Devil Fruits was meant to help the Beast Pirates become stronger and reign in the One Piece world as the crew of an Emperor.

The relationship between Hanafuda and Ace

Although Hanafuda has never been a part of the central storyline of One Piece, he was introduced by Oda in SBS volume 109. It was revealed that he was a vicious pirate who was popularly known as the King of Lizards. He was quite powerful and thus was appointed as the Warlord of the Sea by the World Government. But Ace took him down, and he was then replaced by Bartholomew Kuma.

While talking about Hanafuda’s relationship with Ulti and Page One in SBS volume 111, Oda revealed that he was affiliated with the Beast Pirates. The mangaka pointed out that he and Kaido clashed in the past, but as they shared a common goal, they decided to form an alliance, which led to Hanafuda helping Kaido in his dream to become Pirate King in One Piece.

He was captivated by Kaido’s strength and thus trusted him with the lives of his children. Sadly, he was killed by his enemies when he was on his way to reunite with his children. His story was truly great, and fans hope that he might get a role in the upcoming season of the One Piece live-action adaptation.

One Piece is available to watch on Crunchyroll.
