I Can Excuse ‘The Beginning After the End’s Animation If They Fix One Thing

Studio A-Cat has been fully committed to The Beginning After the End. And by that, I mean it is committed to ruining the entire experience. The series isn’t half as bad as the studio has made it out to be. And with the latest episode, it has become clear that the series will never be able to redeem itself.

Ten episodes in, and I have already lost hope of a proper adaptation. After all, nothing short of a miracle can save this anime now. But at the same time, I desperately want the studio to honor the original plot, and I am ready to forgive its past sins if it can stick to the story.

The Beginning of the End diverges from the original plot again

Episode 10 of The Beginning After the End featured Arthur’s first day at the Xyrus Academy. But soon, he gets distracted from the hubbub around him by an owl. As Arthur followed the owl, he is lead to a clearing where a visibly pissed off old woman awaits him.

The woman in question is Cynthia Goodsky, the founder and current headmaster of the Xyrus Academy. But why did she call out Arthur, a new student, to a solitary area like a chuuni student who wants a battle? That is probably only known to Studio A-Cat. But the meeting between Cynthia and Arthur was quite different in the actual manhwa.

In the original material, Cynthia never called Arthur away from the school’s crowd. In fact, their first meeting happened before Arthur had even joined the Academy. In the manhwa, Cynthia had chosen to give Arthur a home visit after finding out that he is a prodigy. She wanted to test out his skills herself, but did so in a respectable manner.

The Beginning After the End needs to stop changing canon plot

It is clear that Cynthia has called Arthur out in the anime in order to have a battle with him. The fight itself isn’t non-canonical canon, but the situation it is held at and the scenes leading to it are. The new character has already gone through changes that were not present in the source material. Cynthia is supposed to test out Arthur during a home visit and not before classes begin. However, the animators probably did not want to animate a few extra backgrounds, as a clearing is definitely easier to set up.

Additionally, Cynthia’s whole attitude has been changed in the anime. In the last few seconds during which she debuts, she looks visibly angry as if Arthur has committed a crime by attending the Academy. But in the source material, Cynthia was actually quite pleased to meet Arthur and did not show even the slightest disrespect.

The studio seems to be actively changing the plot just to suit itself, but I am not having any of it. Cynthia is a sweet character, and she does not deserve to be butchered like this. If the studio next decides to make her a mean headmaster who mistreats Arthur and discriminates openly, then I am simply going to riot.

The Beginning After the End anime is currently available to stream on Crunchyroll.
