Sarah Jessica Parker Responds to Fan Dislike for And Just Like That’s Che

Sarah Jessica Parker was surprised to learn And Just Like That character Che Diaz (played by Sara Ramirez) was not a fan favorite.

In an interview with The Guardian published on Friday, June 6, Parker revealed she had no idea that so many fans of the series didn’t like the controversial nonbinary character until a friend brought it up.

“A friend of mine brought it up to me, and it’s like: ‘What are you talking about?’” she explained. “And he said: ‘Yeah, there’s all this conversation.’ I’ve been an actor for 50 years, and I’ve almost never paid attention to peripheral chatter. I loved working with them.”

Parker also spoke about the attention that the show and her character Carrie Bradshaw has received from Gen Z, who admire the character decades after viewers were first introduced to the Manhattan writer.

“It’s curious, because their lives are so different – the language they use around dating is different,” she said. “They’re less patient. They’re more punitive. They’re not as forgiving of people’s shortcomings. I’m not condemning it, it’s just what I’ve heard. So it’s really interesting that they feel so spirited about it. It doesn’t mean they aren’t objecting to Big and Carrie’s relationship, or the way he treated her, or choices Carrie made. But people had those strong feelings back then, too.”

As for whether or not she feels disappointed that the plotlines of the original series, and especially the negative relationships of the show’s main characters, are still so relatable, Parker gave a thoughtful response.

“I think it would be a reason to feel disheartened, but the show is also about finding home and contentment, whatever home means to you,” she explained. “I feel that 20- and 30-year-olds should be searching. There should be something in the distance that’s important and exciting, and worth the wait. Part of it is rather dreary that great women of all ages are still incredibly frustrated by the dating scene, but I also see a lot of happy endings.”

And Just Like That’s Biggest Scandals: Shocking Death and Departures

The third season of the series kicked off on May 29, on HBO Max, and new episodes are released each week. The show’s June 5 episode saw Parker’s Carrie Bradshaw battling a rat infestation at her new Gramercy Park home.

Carrie sold her Upper East Side brownstone in season 2 after she was reunited with Aidan Shaw (John Corbett), who refused to enter the home where she cheated on him. She also sold the home she once shared with her husband Mr. Big, (Chris Noth) who was killed off in the series’ inaugural episode. The townhome cost $5 million in real life, though the show doesn’t specify what Carrie paid for it.
