CONVICTED murderer Robert ‘Roo’ Redmond is suspected of ordering an attack which has left a fellow inmate in critical condition, The Irish Sun can reveal.
Stephen Kearney, 39, is fighting for his life in Beaumont hospital following the brutal attack on Dublin’s Mountjoy Prison on Friday evening.
Jail chiefs have now identified at least three brutes, who have a combined 255 convictions between them, involved in the shocking beating.
Kearney, who had previously served time for manslaughter, was set upon in the exercise yard of the prison.
Three ambulances rushed to the scene and he was then taken to hospital where he has been in intensive care since.
Authorities involved in the major investigation now believe that killer Roo Redmond is the man suspected of ordering the attack.
A source told us: “Redmond is certainly under investigation for ordering it but he wasn’t physically involved in the attack itself.
“The motive is still being looked at but obviously it was a row within the prison.
“There are a number of men identified for carrying out the attack and good progress is being made.
“It was shocking brutality, an awful incident and the victim is in very serious condition.”
Redmond is a notorious gangster from Kilbarrack in north Dublin with over 100 convictions for serious and organised crime.
He is locked up on life imprisonment for the murder of dad-of-eight Barry Wolverson in Swords, Dublin on January 17, 2020.
But he was also sentenced to 19 years to serve consecutively.
He got seven years for conspiring to murder drug dealer Jordan Davis, who was blasted to death by drug dealer Wayne Cooney as the victim pushed his young child in a buggy in 2019.
Redmond ordered Davis’ hit over a €70,000 drug debt.
Prior to the hit, Redmond text Davis: “I’m on your case mate, it won’t be long. Get off me phone, soon, very soon, bang bang.”
TWO PROBES
Two investigations are underway following the attack on Kearney, one by Irish Prison Service and other by the gardai, which will take priority.
Victim Kearney – who was due to be released in the coming weeks – is from Coultry Drive, Ballymun, Dublin, and has over 120 convictions.
His most serious is for manslaughter, for which he was jailed for nine years after he killed Francis Gallagher, 18, at Coultry Road on October 25, 2004.
An Irish Prison Service spokesman said: “The Irish Prison Service can confirm that an incident occurred at Mountjoy Prison on 06 June 2025 involving a prisoner. The incident has been referred to An Garda Síochána.”
A garda spokesman also confirmed the incident and added: “Investigation into the incident is ongoing.”
