Sir Keir Starmer must pick one of US or EU – he cannot have it both ways

Pick one, PM

KEIR Starmer emerged from the White House with a potentially huge prize. But a crunch is coming which he cannot duck.

First, let us commend him for the success of his US jaunt.

It is true he had the ultimate Trump card — the King’s invitation to a second State visit — but he played it well.

It is ironic that a Labour Party which campaigned with pious rage AGAINST a Trump visit in 2019 now deploys exactly that for Britain’s advantage.

That’s the reality of politics and governing.

It was helpful to the PM too that he has belatedly accepted our depleted defences must be rebuilt using the scandalously wasteful aid budget.

That has cost him his Development Minister . . . but she is no loss.

Sir Keir, though, looks guilty of wishful thinking that he can do both a bumper Brexit trade deal with the US and another with the EU smoothing the path for our goods.

It’s not just that a Trump agreement will be vastly harder to strike if we follow EU rules, as will be required.

It’s that Brussels will actively sabotage it. It remains vindictive and vengeful.

It cannot afford Brexit to succeed, especially if our independence spares us from the punitive tariffs the President imposes on the EU.

Sir Keir won’t be able to face both ways.

His almost inevitable choice will be that lucrative new US deal OR a tweaked one with an increasingly irrelevant EU, and Britain then battered by Trump’s tariffs too.

We would be insane not to go with America — as the PM surely now accepts.

Terror vision

THANKS to the BBC your licence fee may now be sitting in Hamas coffers.

The broadcaster’s anti-Israel, pro- Palestine bias has finally spilled over into potentially bankrolling terrorism, albeit through negligence rather than intent.

A new low even for a corporation engulfed by seemingly daily scandals.

The BBC failed to do due diligence on a Hamas propaganda “documentary” because, let’s face it, it suited its narrative.

Its production company even funnelled your cash to a Hamas goon’s wife.

Shame on the BBC — and the celebs who idiotically supported this programme only for the broadcaster itself to suddenly denounce it.

The BBC should not wait for counter-terror cops to act.

It should fire all those responsible now.

Jolly Will done

CONGRATS to Prince William after securing £50million to build homes for those at risk of becoming rough sleepers.

The plight of the homeless has been his obsession since Princess Di took him to shelters as a lad.

His Homewards project was inspired by those experiences.

Your mum would be so proud, William.
