The 69p kitchen staple that makes your white clothes even whiter – say goodbye to stained socks

AS the warmer months of spring approach, many people will be turning to white shirts and lighter clothing to stay cool and embrace the new season.

It also means we can look forward to hanging washing out on the line to air dry again.

But trying to keep your white laundry bright can be a challenge as they’re prone to discolouration, yellowing, and stains.

Socks and school uniforms, in particular, can be difficult to get mud stains out of.

One textiles expert, however, has shared a simple, cost-effective solution to bring back their brightness.

The best part? You probably have the item you need in your home already.

Thomas Bird, textiles expert and owner of Fabric Online reveals his quick and easy hack to restoring your clothes to their former glory.

“Lemon juice is a natural and affordable solution to making your whites even whiter”, he insists.

“Lemons contain citric acid, a natural bleaching agent that effectively breaks down even the toughest stains.

“Unlike chemical whiteners, such as bleach, it lifts stains from your clothes without the risk of damage making it the perfect alternative for brightening your whites.”

A pack of lemons costs just 69p in Aldi, making it a very affordable hack.

Beyond its stain-fighting power, Thomas points out that lemon juice also leaves your clothes with a fresh, citrusy scent whilst eliminating any unpleasant odours.

He adds: “Whilst lemon juice works wonders on whites, its bleaching effect can fade coloured fabrics.

“So, to avoid unwanted damage, be sure to only use this trick on your white clothes.”

To use lemon juice in your laundry, simply squeeze three lemons into a glass, which should equal about half a cup of lemon juice.

Next, add the lemon juice directly to your washing machine along with your regular laundry detergent.

Then set your washing machine to the normal spin cycle and let the magic happen.

After the wash, let your clothes dry as usual, and watch the noticeable difference appear as they dry.

With Pancake Day coming up on Tuesday, March 4, it’s the perfect time to give the hack a go if you have extra lemons left over.

If you want to avoid squeezing your own lemons, you can also pick up bottles of lemon juice for as little as 55p in supermarkets.
