Capcom cleverly fooled everyone at Summer Game Fest 2025 by teasing Resident Evil 9 halfway through the event and then officially revealing the game titled Resident Evil Requiem, with a trailer at the end.
The trailer offered a glimpse into the post-nuke world of Raccoon City, but it also gave our first look at our protagonist, who looks a lot like Ethan’s daughter, Rose from Resident Evil Village, but she’s not. Yet, her past has a deeper connection to the RE universe.
She may seem like a completely new character, but her name’s Grace Ashcroft and truly passionate Resident Evil fans will know it’s not the first time someone with the name Ashcroft appeared in an RE title.
Grace Ashcroft is the daughter of Alyssa Ashcroft from Resident Evil: Outbreak

For starters, Resident Evil: Outbreak was a 2004 online multiplayer survival horror title released by Capcom, and it wasn’t your traditional single-player RE title as it leaned more towards co-op and online play. The game featured eight playable characters, with Alyssa Ashcroft being one of them.
Now, let’s talk about Grace’s connection to her. The first part of Resident Evil Requiem’s trailer shows her working as an analyst in the FBI and her superior, Nathan Dempsy, asking her to investigate an unidentified infection circling the Wrenwood Hotel.
Nathan presents Grace with a file and tells her, “I know that’s where your mother was murdered,” referring to her mother getting killed in the hotel he’s sending her to, immediately followed by “Alyssa died eight years ago.”
These two lines, one after the other, confirm that Alyssa is Grace’s mother, and she was killed while investigating Wrenwood, hence tying Grace to the bigger RE universe. Even if Capcom is trying to throw us off with the trailer, Grace and Alyssa are undoubtedly related since both are Ashcrofts.
The haunting flashback snippets in between feature a blonde woman in a red jacket carrying a flashlight and investigating a withered hotel, which is unmistakably Alyssa, as she’s blonde and she used to wear a similar red jacket in Resident Evil: Outbreak.
Interestingly, Alyssa’s last mention was in Resident Evil 7, as the game featured a newspaper article written by her dated January 19th, 2016, meaning that she was alive during that time.
But the new trailer confirms that she’s no longer alive, and Grace’s trauma stems from that very event. Wrenwood Hotel will also seemingly play a huge part in her narrative, we just have to wait and see what Capcom’s got in store for us with Resident Evil: Requiem.
Will other Resident Evil characters appear in Requiem?

The reveal trailer confirms that Alyssa is dead and she was murdered in the Wrenwood Hotel. But it could be another one of Capcom’s throwaways, and we might just see Alyssa pop up either as herself or as a creature in Resident Evil Requiem since she already has a new character model, as seen from the flashbacks.
We’ll be following Grace throughout the story, but previous rumors have suggested that everyone’s favorite federal hotshot, Leon S. Kennedy, will be another playable character for Resident Evil Requiem. He’s also rumored to have a huge part in the narrative since we’ll be revisiting Raccoon City and the RPD post bombing.
Iconic characters like Ada Wong and Chris Redfield may also make an appearance in this title, given that Ada was set to appear in Resident Evil Village, but the idea got scrapped, and the BSAA was heavily involved in the same game, where Chris had a major role to play.
Assuming the Requiem takes place after Resident Evil Village, it would make sense for all of these characters to appear. Plus, the fans yearn for Leon and Ada as they’re long overdue for an appearance in a current mainline RE title, barring the remakes.
What we do know is that Resident Evil: Requiem will be another gut-wrenchingly terrifying entry in the legendary horror series. So, what do you think about Grace’s connection to the bigger RE universe? Share your thoughts and opinions in the comment section below.
