During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, showrunner Sarah Lampert teased that the mystery would be ongoing for some time.

Lampert made the above statement, revealing that both possibilities were explored before landing on the answer. When asked whether the mystery would be drawn out, showrunner Sarah Glinski confirmed fans will have to wait for a while in season 4 before learning the answer. As a result, the entire plotline risks being too drawn out and putting viewers off.
