Well, in their defence, it’s not like Game of Thrones (the show) followed George R.R. Martin’s vision either. So what’s different with Game of Thrones: War of Westeros? For starters… It’s a video game.
A strategy video game with options for solo gameplay or multiplayer mode, you are the lord who has to conquer the Seven Kingdoms, command the great houses, rally your troops, and lead Westeros into victory (against the White Walkers and the enemies within). But, there is a twist in the tale as the cinematic reveal of Game of Thrones: War for Westeros went awfully right!
Jon Snow resurrects… as a White Walker
Martin published A Game of Thrones (the first novel in the A Song of Ice and Fire saga) back in 1996. Ever since then, the world has become obsessed with the world of Westeros, Essos, and everything within the realm of Martin.

Well, instead of the usual George R.R. Martin stuff, where Jon Snow gets killed by the Night’s Watch and Melissandra resurrects him, you can get Jon Snow killed by the Night King himself!
The cinematic trailer, which was revealed at the Summer Game Fest announcement show, showcased a real-time strategy video game that will be coming to PC in 2026. The trailer is simply iconic and reminds you of the 2004 game, The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-Earth.
You can see the exact moment Jon Snow wakes up with ice eyes. After a brutal fight with the Night King, Snow gasps, revealing that he has been stabbed by the Night King’s spear (that sounded wrong). A later clip sees a dead Jon Snow rising up to stand beside the Night King as Daenerys’ dragon falls in the battle.
That is probably when George R.R. Martin would have sighed the biggest sigh in his career in TV shows and video games.
All jokes aside, the game does offer you complete control over everything, including the survival of your favorite characters (which wasn’t the case in the TV show). War for Westeros will be a brilliant and clever game where the stakes (like the series) are very real and the choices you make will matter.
You will have a say in George R.R. Martin’s Game of Thrones
When you’re playing Game of Thrones: War for Westeros, several choices will be made, including which house you can lead: Stark, Lannister, Targaryens, or even the Night King.

Inspired by the works of George R.R. Martin (duh), the developers for War for Westeros have taken care to put the utmost details in the video game, but the outcome is completely up to the player.
That is what game director Ryan McMahon said in one of his statements (via Variety), when he was asked about the upcoming mangum opus of a project.
This time, you’re not watching the ‘Game of Thrones’ – you’re playing it. War for Westeros puts you in the seat of power, whether you’re leading the Starks, Targaryens, or Lannisters, or even commanding the Night King and his army of the dead, you’ll wield real power and rewrite the fate of the realm.
To put it in brief, it’s like the choices from Until Dawn and the storyline from Martin’s Game of Thrones creating a love-child who grew up being a fan of strategy games, and we are loving it.
The cinematic trailer looks awesome, the details in the graphics are simply stunning, and although it’s a strategy video game, the storyline looks wildly intriguing. A release date hasn’t been announced for the video game, but we do know one thing.
Game of Thrones: War for Westeros is slated for a release date in 2026 and will be available to play on PC (USA).
