The success of Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece is something that needs to be studied. One aspect that is responsible for the majority of the series’ fame and recognition is its main character, Monkey D. Luffy. Since the beginning, Luffy has been the only character in the entire One Piece who has been a fan favorite, no matter what the situation.
Even his mistakes were sometimes ignored because of the character development he had in the story. Plus, his uniqueness as a shonen protagonist made him special in many ways and helped him become popular among anime and manga fans. But ever since the Elbaph arc started in One Piece, Luffy has been acting a little strange, and fans do not like his new shade at all.
In fact, many feel that his character in One Piece is regressing in terms of development, and that is not at all good for the series. It looks like he has changed, and this change is not good at all. Thus, Oda needs to do something about it, or One Piece will lose one of the most important things that made it special.
Luffy’s overall character development in One Piece
Ever since the One Piece story started, the only thing that has remained constant throughout is Luffy’s goofy personality. He has been the same dumb kid who wants to become Pirate King and has been doing whatever he feels right, no matter the situation. And while they may sound confusing, it was one of the things that made him special.
Although he has witnessed growth and character development in One Piece, in terms of power and his role as a captain of the crew, it didn’t affect his core personality, and that was really important. This way, he made it to the top of the pirate world but still retained his goofy personality, which aligned with the principles and ideas of Sun God Nika, whose powers he inherited.
There were some moments where it felt like Luffy might lose himself completely, like in Sabaody or in Marineford, but he went through those phases and got ready to face the New World. Now, he has entered the final saga in One Piece; hopefully, Eiichiro Oda will get him ready for the upcoming dangers of the world.
Luffy’s character is changing for the worse
As mentioned above, with the One Piece story entering the final saga, Luffy’s character will see a lot of changes that could affect his personality, and it feels like it has already started with Elbaph. Ever since Luffy entered Elbaph, it feels like he has lost the composure that made him plan his next move. And while there can be a lot of factors for it, the biggest one is definitely Shanks.
Elbaph has a special connection with Shanks, and ever since Luffy found out about it, he has been excited. In fact, he has taken some risky steps in order to get more information about him.

From fighting Scopper Gaban to freeing Loki, Luffy lost his goofiness and developed an obsessive nature that won’t change until he meets Shanks.
This development is not looking good for him and has resulted in him losing his fame among the One Piece fans. If this continues, Luffy will become just like the other shonen protagonists who obsess over one goal and lose everything that they built along the way just to reach that one particular goal.
