We Still Don’t Know if ‘Dragon Ball DAIMA’ Is Canon and That May Be for the Betterment of Akira Toriyama’s Franchise

The expansive world of the Dragon Ball franchise does come with some confusion within the fandom. The latest addition to the series, Dragon Ball DAIMA, has become the subject of it. Fans aren’t sure if it’s canon, although it is a continuation of the Majii Buu Saga of Dragon Ball Z.

From the art style to the completely new realm Goku and friends have entered, Dragon Ball DAIMA stands out in the franchise. New villains were introduced and the characters we love are much smaller. It’s both cute and funny while maintaining the same stakes as any other Dragon Ball series.

Now that DAIMA has come to a conclusion with 20 episodes on February 28, 2025, fans are still itching to find out if the series is connected to the overall franchise. The updated appearance of Goku’s Super Saiyan 4 doesn’t make it easier. The producer of the series, however, refuses to confirm or deny it.

Only Akira Toriyama can confirm if Dragon Ball DAIMA is canon to the universe

Despite the unfortunate passing of the Dragon Ball creator, the production team behind DAIMA was still left behind with instructions. Akira Toriyama was particularly heavily involved in crafting the new version of Goku’s Super Saiyan 4.

In Episode 18 titled Awakening, fans got what they were waiting for. We witnessed Goku transform from Super Saiyan 3 to Super Saiyan 4. It still surprised fans considering the only other time he has used this form is in Dragon Ball GT.

In Dragon Ball DAIMA, this form has been updated. The color scheme looks closer to Goku’s Super Saiyan God, suggesting a connection to Dragon Ball Super. The producer of the series did not offer a confirmation nor denial when asked about this.

Fans react to this, saying that this might be the best for the current trajectory of Dragon Ball. Toriyama is the only person who could’ve confirmed if the series is indeed a continuation. Moreover, it was unfair to ask a producer about this.

It’s also better to leave stuff up to imagination sometimes. Some fans argue that Toriyama’s involvement means it is, and some are too annoyed by the continuity issues to care.

Toriyama didn’t care about continuity issues in DAIMA

The major problem with Dragon Ball DAIMA is its disconnect from the rest of the franchise. In Super, Goku states that Super Saiyan 3 is his strongest form and yet he needed to go to another level in DAIMA.

Toriyama’s forgetfulness possibly played a part in retconning integral plotlines. In DAIMA, it’s revealed that Namekians are originally from the Demon Realm, despite establishing that they were from Namek in Dragon Ball Super. Piccolo also somehow forgets how to speak the language.

Other issues are rather insignificant, such as Shenron only granting one wish to newcomers but offering special treatment to others. DAIMA keeps adding to the lore in very confusing ways. So it’s ultimately up to your interpretation if it’s canon or not.

Dragon Ball DAIMA is available on Crunchyroll and Netflix.
