Severe cold front to bring snow, rain and strong winds this weekend

A powerful cold front will sweep across the western parts of South Africa this weekend, bringing harsh winter weather and warnings from the South African Weather Service (SAWS). The public and small stock farmers are urged to brace for a sudden drop in temperatures, heavy rainfall, snowfall, and strong winds.

Adverse weather to begin early Saturday

According to the SAWS, the cold front is expected to make landfall early Saturday morning before spreading eastward during the weekend. The storm system will bring widespread rain, particularly to the Western Cape and parts of the Northern Cape.

“The highest 24-hour rainfall amounts are expected on Saturday, with 10 to 20 mm likely over the western parts of the Western Cape and 30 to 40 mm over the mountainous regions,” SAWS confirmed.

In addition to rain, snowfall is also forecast for high-lying areas.

“Light snowfall is also likely over the Western Cape mountains and the southern high-lying areas of the Northern Cape,” the service added.

This rare weather pattern could disrupt travel and rural farming operations.

Warnings for sea travel and road safety

The weather conditions are likely to cause hazardous driving and maritime challenges. Roads may flood, and visibility on highways will be reduced, especially in areas receiving heavy rain or snow.

“The weather conditions will result in difficult driving conditions and flooded roads,” SAWS warned.

They also highlighted that strong winds and rough seas pose a risk to sea navigation.

Farmers and residents urged to prepare

Small stock farmers are urged to take precautions against the cold and wet conditions, as livestock may be vulnerable to sudden weather shifts. The SAWS continues to monitor the system closely and will provide updates as it progresses.

With winter weather intensifying, are South Africans ready to face the season’s first major cold front head-on?
