Filming the CBS drama series Tracker is no cakewalk. Justin Hartley, who portrays Colter Shaw on the show as well as serving as executive producer, admitted that filming some of his scenes is harder than it looks.
Colter travels around the U.S. in a silver Airstream, taking viewers along as he meets up with some familiar faces on his quest to solve missing persons cases. However, he admitted that filming in such a confined space was “challenging,” per Sioux City Journal.
Other cast members don’t seem to mind filming in such a small space, though. Fiona Rene, who plays Reenie Greene, said, “It’s been really cool to play in such a small space.”
The series is filmed in Vancouver, but the production team does an incredible job of making the viewer feel like they are journeying across the U.S. with Colter and company.
“We’re a roadshow,” executive producer Ken Olin said. “We’re out on location seven out of eight days shooting. Physically, it’s challenging – particularly for Justin. It’s a very physical show and he’s in 90 percent of it.”
Justin, 48, reflected on the show’s success, and attributed it to the fact that “everybody’s protecting the baby. And the baby is the show. There are the viewer gods that we can’t control, but just like anything else, if you put your best foot forward and you surround yourself with the best people, your chances increase.”
It did not come as a surprise when CBS renewed Tracker for season 3 as season 2 continues to air on CBS. There’s some exciting things to come for the show, as executive producer Elwood Reid teased seeing more of the Shaw family unpack their drama in future episodes.
“Colter came from a dysfunctional family,” he said. “He bore the brunt of that … and we’re going to unpeel more stuff with his sister.”
Melissa Roxburgh portrays Colter’s sister, Dory Shaw, while Jensen Ackles plays Colter’s older brother, Russell Shaw. Melissa, 32, previously hinted that fans would see her return to the show.
“I mean, I hope so. I had so much fun on that show,” she told Us Weekly in a February 8 interview.
She had nothing but great things to say about working with Justin and the rest of the cast.
“Justin is great. It’s such a lovely and warm set [because] Justin does such a good job of making it that way,” the Hunting Party actress told the outlet. “So I’d love to go back. Justin is a friend and it’s nice to play with your friends and I love the show, so we’ll see.”
During a February 16 interview with TV Insider Justin was asked if both of his onscreen siblings would return to Tracker in the future. “We’re writing for them, yeah,” he confirmed, also hinting that the mystery of who killed Ashton Shaw will be closer to being solved.
“I think there’s a beautiful way to tell a story in sort of the best way, and I think that’s what we should do,” the This Is Us alum told the outlet. “And all the writers are on board with that, too, everyone wants to do that.”
