RORY McIlory has admitted that he made a number of key adjustments to his golf bag at the Arnold Palmer Invitational last weekend.
The Down native finished T13 at Bay Hill, but still racked in a massive payout after his -3 total at the $20million Signature event.
The four-time major winner admitted a club gamble didn’t pay off at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
But he’s sure he’ll learn a lesson from the gamble he took with his woods at Arnold’s course, but admits he needs to get the clubs dialled in.
Speaking with the media after the API, he said: “I tried new woods for the first three days.
“They didn’t quite work out the way I wanted it to, so I went back to my old stuff (on Sunday).
“(On Saturday), I lost strokes off the tee, which is the first time I’ve done that in a long time.
“So, I just went back to what was familiar and what’s comfortable. I felt like I was just scrambling all weekend, just trying to save par and pick up the odd birdie here and there.”
The coming month is a big one for the Northern Irishman as he looks to end his 11-year wait for a fifth major at the 2025 Masters in April.
Three-time FedEx Cup winner McIlroy openly admits that he’s solely focused in majors at this point in his career as he outline some changes at Augusta National.
McIlroy added: “I think it’s just going to be a little bit different this year.
“Just with there’s some areas of the course that are maybe a little thinner tree-wise, just with the hurricane that rolled through.
“Sixteen is a new green.
“So, yeah, I’ll probably go up there once or twice beforehand.”
But first up is the so-called ‘fifth major’ as the PGA Tour heads to its HQ at Ponte Vedra Beach in Florida for The Players Championship.
World Number one Scottie Scheffler is favourite to claim a third straight title at the tournament, while McIlroy is second with the bookies after his 2019 success at Sawgrass.
All the action gets underway from Thursday on the course that boasts the infamous Par 3 17th.
