Although the series is extraordinary and a must-watch for every F1 fan, the show must be watched with a hint of skepticism and suspicion. From scripted conversations to shots that never happened in the real world, the show is not as truthful or honest as one might it to be. Yet, the latest season of Drive to Survive deserves some credit for featuring one of the most divisive controversies of the F1 world that shook it completely: the Honor controversy.

The seventh and recently released season of the show delves deep into one of the most dramatic times in recent Formula 1 history in its first episode, which not only rocked the foundations of the Red Bull team but also created ripples across the entire F1 community. Providing some unprecedented behind-the-scenes glimpses into the Red Bull Racing Team Principal Christian Horner’s scandal, the show’s seventh season has shocked the world with its event coverage.

Here is all we know about the scandal and how Drive to Survive tackled it:

Back in 2024, the world of Formula 1 was gearing up for a new season of battling it out on the race track, but suddenly, the F1 world found itself in the midst of a scandal, with Red Bull Racing at the center of the whole conspiracy, which has been covered in detail by Drive to Survive season 7. Allegations had surfaced involving the Red Bull Racing Team Principal Christian Horner, accusing him of ‘inappropriate and controlling behavior’ towards a female employee.

Although the specifics were initially kept under wraps, things soon took a serious turn as Red Bull chief executive Oliver Mintzlaff promptly initiated an independent investigation to address the serious claims. Meanwhile, Horner maintained his innocence and continued to deny the said allegations. Soon, Horner had a nine-hour meeting, at a secret location, with the external specialist barrister appointed to examine the case.

While some supported the Red Bull Principal, who had been in the role since 2005, others like Toto Wolff called for greater transparency about the investigation. After almost a month, Horner was cleared of all charges on 28 February, with Red Bull GmbH stating the following: The independent investigation into the allegations made against Mr Horner is complete, and Red Bull can confirm that the grievance has been dismissed.

Despite calls for releasing the details of the investigation to the public, the matter was kept confidential, and Red Bull further remained that they would not comment on the matter any further out of respect for the parties involved (via The Independent). However, just a day later, as Horner returned to business, the situation escalated drastically as an anonymous source disseminated a Google Drive folder to several journalists, team principals, and FIA officials, including FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem. This folder contained nearly 80 files, predominantly screenshots of WhatsApp conversations purportedly between Horner and the female employee.

Just a day after Christian Horner was cleared and got ready for another potentially brilliant season, the Whatsapp messages were leaked. Containing intimate content and even requests for explicit photos, the messages painted a picture of a clearly, deeply personal, and potentially inappropriate relationship. While the authenticity of the content was unable to be verified, Horner responded with a statement shortly afterwards (via The Independent).

I won’t comment on anonymous speculation, but to reiterate, I have always denied the allegations. I respected the integrity of the independent investigation and fully cooperated with it every step of the way. It was a thorough and fair investigation conducted by an independent specialist barrister and it has concluded, dismissing the complaint made. I remain fully focused on the start of the season.

The timing of this leak, on the eve of the season opener, seemed like a calculated decision to maximize disruption. Horner, in the seventh season of Drive to Survive, refused to comment on the matter, stating: It was obviously premeditated to cause me the maximum amount of distraction, the maximum amount of aggravationIt was obvious that the end goal was for me to leave Red Bull. As for who he thinks leaked the messages, he did not answer.

Meanwhile, the scandal had a huge impact on Red Bull Racing, as internally, the team grappled with the potential ramifications for their reputation and performance in the ongoing season. While the female employee at the center of the allegations was suspended (via The Sun), the move underscored the seriousness with which the organization treated the matter. Externally, McLaren’s Zak Brown reportedly became a focal point of Horner’s ire. In the series, Drive to Survive, Horner even accuses him of exploring the situation for competitive gains.

Despite the controversy, Horner, along with his wife, the former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell, presented a united front throughout, with Horner even acknowledging at one point that you can either hide away or you can get out there and face it.

The Christian Horner scandal transcended the confines of Red Bull Racing and led to conversations about the culture in Formula 1. While the controversy gave rise to arguments about the endemic misogyny found in such sports communities, particularly within the F1 community, Red Bull’s handling of the matter was also criticized by many as it highlighted the structural problems of the male-dominated world and how it tends to treat its women employees.

The scandal also raised questions about the responsibilities of teams and governing bodies in safeguarding all, but particularly women employees. A more exclusive workspace culture is needed within the sport as it continues to garner a significant female fan base. Meanwhile, it was commendable of Netflix to capture this tumultuous chapter in Formula 1, offering fans an unfiltered look into the challenges faced by one of its most prominent figures.

When asked about the decision to include the controversy, the executive producer of the hit Netflix series, James Gay-Rees, stated to The Hollywood Reporter:

The show has never been out to bury anybody and bury any of the team principles. But it was a big story. So you can’t pretend it wasn’t there. Obviously, it’s all kind of calmed down now. We’re not looking to necessarily resuscitate it, but it was just at the beginning of the series, episode one, and then it kind of goes away like it did in reality. So we’re not trying to stir it up again, but we have to touch on it, just because it was everywhere for a bit and you couldn’t avoid it totally.

While many expected the series to downplay the controversy, ignoring it was never an option. This approach of Netflix shows the role as a documentary-style series but also the evolving culture of the sport, where transparency and media pressure have a greater influence than ever. While the episode ended with the confirmation of Christian Horner’s innocence, it was a pivotal chapter to include in the series, which is sure to continue to be dissected by fans and media alike for years to come, even though it isn’t making any headlines anymore.

Drive to Survive is available to be streamed on Netflix.
