Yesterday Freddie Osborne, six, took the day off school to became the show’s youngest dog-handler.

He and his eight-year-old fox terrier Penny took home two winning rosettes in different categories at Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre.

Freddie said: “I love dog shows and I love Penny because she’s not just my dog, she’s my best friend.”

Dad James Osborne, 42, of Bobbington, Staffs, added: “He took it all completely in his stride and we’re very proud of him.

“He just seemed a natural out there and nothing seemed to faze him.”

Yesterday judges ranked the Terriers and Hound breeds, including Wolfhounds.

Security at the venue is expected to be tightened this year after last year’s show was interrupted when protesters stormed onto the showground – with guards forced to pull a man and a woman out of the arena.

Crufts runs to Sunday.
