CHILDREN will be dressing up as their favourite fictional characters tomorrow to celebrate World Book Day.
The event can, however, put parents under pressure to splash out on new outfits.

Save your pennies and instead get creative with what you already have. Try one of these easy ideas . . .
MATILDA: All you need for this Roald Dahl schoolgirl character is a navy dress.
Finish the look with a red bow, ribbon or band in your child’s hair.
ANGELINA BALLERINA: If your child already does ballet, repurpose the outfit to become the dancing mouse from Katharine Holabird’s series of books.
Just add some white tights and use some old make-up to draw on whiskers and a pink nose.
FUNNYBONES: Dig out Halloween outfits for an easy win.
Any skeleton costume can be used for Funnybones, the classic children’s book by Allan Ahlberg.
You could also use a witch’s outfit to represent the witch in Julia Donaldson’s Room On The Broom.
And if you have a black cape from a vampire outfit, combine it with a school uniform to bring JK Rowling’s Harry Potter to life.
Draw on some black glasses as a final flourish.
BUNNY UP: A pair of bunny ears lying around can be used to create the white rabbit from Alice In Wonderland.
Just draw on whiskers and a pink nose and dress your child in white.
Or you could use the ears for Beatrix Potter’s Peter Rabbit by matching with a blue jacket and brown trousers.
RAVI’S ROAR: Dig through your child’s wardrobe and, if you have a pair of red shorts and a red-and-white-striped top, you’ll be able to pull off the leading character from Ravi’s Roar, the book by Tom Percival.
You could also take it up a step by drawing some orange and white stripes on the face to be the tiger he transforms into.
