Ghana Revenue Authority’s (GRA) Commissioner-General, Anthony Kwasi Sarpong, has underscored the urgency of resetting Ghana’s economy to ensure sustainable growth for future generations.
Speaking at the National Economic Dialogue on Channel One TV as monitored by MyNewsGH, he highlighted the importance of aligning revenue mobilization efforts with broader economic development.
“We must be grateful to God for the president that he has given to us, and he has indicated that we need to reset Ghana, which also includes resetting the economy,” he stated.
According to him, Ghana is at a crucial point in its economic journey, and decisive steps must be taken to strengthen businesses, foster economic stability, and ensure long-term prosperity.
“If you look at this century, at the end of 2025, a quarter of the century is already gone. We are just at the threshold of the next quarter, which will take us to 2050.
“It’s so important that we reset our economy in a manner that will enable us to build our nation and create the necessary opportunities for ourselves and future generations,” Sarpong emphasized.
He noted that revenue mobilization cannot be discussed in isolation from economic growth, as taxes are primarily generated from thriving businesses.
“One couldn’t have talked about revenue mobilization without actually rebuilding the economy. After all, in every economy, it’s when businesses do well that revenue is collected, irrespective of the type of tax.
“When the economy is not doing well, it affects business growth, business profit, and, obviously, the taxes we collect. Similarly, if businesses are doing well, revenue should go up together with the level of compliance.”
Sarpong stressed the need for policies that encourage business expansion and economic stability to ensure sustainable revenue collection for national development.
“When we support businesses to grow and succeed, then, of course, we can have the opportunity to collect the taxes that are necessary for our national development.”
