There Was a Clear Winner in Emma Watson’s Controversial Harry Potter Kisses With Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint

Known for portraying the role of Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter franchise, Emma Watson has been quite candid in discussing the awkwardness of filming romantic scenes with her co-stars, Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint, in the final two installments of the franchise.

While both experiences were uncomfortable to some extent due to their close, sibling-like bond, Watson later admitted that one scene was noticeably less awkward than the other.

Emma Watson reflected on filming the controversial kissing scene in Harry Potter

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 caught many fans off guard with the unexpected and intense kissing scene between Hermione and Harry, a vision triggered by one of Voldemort’s Horcruxes as Ron struggles with jealousy over their closeness.

Reflecting on her experience of filming the scene, Emma Watson described it as “the weirdest thing ever.” To make matters even more uncomfortable, she later learned they would have to perform the scene topless while covered in silver paint.

In an interview with JoBlo, Watson shared,

They were like, ‘Oh, and P.S., we hope you don’t mind but we’d like you both to be topless and covered in silver paint.’ I was like, ‘Ookay,’ if it wasn’t weird enough before. [laughs] So yeah, it was bizarre.

The scene sparked significant discussion, especially given the franchise’s family-friendly reputation. Many fans found it unnecessarily explicit and out of character, while others appreciated how it heightened the drama and emotional tension, as per ScreenRant.

There was also disappointment due to a slight shift from the book. While the novel also explores Ron’s jealousy over Harry and Hermione’s bond, the explicit nature of the scene was largely created for the film, making it even more controversial.

Emma Watson revealed why kissing Rupert Grint was more awkward than Daniel Radcliffe

Emma Watson has been candid about how uncomfortable she felt while filming kissing scenes with her Harry Potter co-stars, Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint.

However, despite the explicit nature of her scene with Radcliffe, she admitted she felt more at ease with him than with Grint, who played Ron Weasley. Speaking to JoBlo, she explained, “Luckily, Dan is very funny and talkative, and we could just have a laugh about it.”

On the other hand, her experience with Grint was different. “Kissing Rupert—he’s slightly more quiet, so I was like, ‘Oh, God, what’s he thinking?’” she shared. “Whereas with Dan, I knew EXACTLY what he was thinking, so that helped.”

Watson once again opened up about it during the 20th-anniversary reunion special, saying, “Obviously, us kissing was the most horrifying thing either of us has ever had to go through.”

However, the awkwardness wasn’t just felt by Watson, as Grint echoed the sentiment. “I never look back at that scene,” he said while discussing the kissing scene, as per the New York Post.

While both kissing scenes were undeniably uncomfortable, Watson’s reflections suggest she at least found some ease filming with Radcliffe.

The Harry Potter franchise is available to watch on Max.
