Temperatures plunge to biting -2.8C in ‘calm’ week as Met Eireann pinpoint exact day ‘unsettled weather’ to hit Ireland

TEMPERATURES hit a staggering low of -2.8C this morning, despite a “calm and uneventful” week ahead.

Met Eireann has said conditions this week are set to remain dry and mild as high pressure takes control over Ireland – but rain could appear soon.

And Carlow Weather’s Alan O’Reilly reported this morning that his weather station recorded temperatures as low as -2.8C earlier.

This comes as temperatures on Monday saw highs of 14C during the daytime, with parts of Ireland being hotter than Spain at times.

Met Eireann said that daytime highs are expected to remain in place for the rest of the week, with mild conditions for the majority of the country.

Met Eireann’s Mark Bowe said: “Our weather is going to be rather calm and uneventful over the next couple of days.

“We’re in that scenario where the jet stream is running just to our north, which helps keep an area of high pressure nestled just across northern Europe, and it’s stretching just about enough to cover Ireland.

“Which is great news as it means plenty of dry and hopefully mild weather for the next couple of days, with just some blustery winds to contend with, and highs touching possibly 12C or 13C.”

However, he warned that the good weather won’t be around for long as overcast conditions are on the horizon for the end of the week.

He added: “Now there is a couple of fronts stuck in the flow between ourselves and Iceland, and they will wax and wane a little bit.

“This means that counties in Connacht and Ulster will see a bit more cloud, and it’ll be mostly overcast this week with some rain or drizzle at times.”

This morning has started out cloudy but dry weather will remain until evening time, with some sun breaking through and temperatures of 9C to 13C.

Tonight will see temperatures drop to around 4C to 9C with some light rain in the north-west.

Tomorrow, conditions will remain much of the same, however, Thursday will see a shift begin to appear.

Mark said: “Now the cloudy but mostly dry weather will stay with us into Wednesday, but we have showers on the way for Thursday, and there’s signs of some possibly very unsettled weather heading our way for the weekend.”

WEEKEND CONDITIONS

Thursday is looking to start with a mix of cloudy and sunny spells, but showers developing in the afternoon and evening, with temperatures of 11C to 14C.

Overnight, it will be mild with some cloud and drizzle, but temperatures will remain high at 6C to 8C.

For Friday, Met Eireann said: “Mostly unsettled then for Friday with a mix of sunny spells and scattered showers.

“Winds will remain a light to moderate southerly although will freshen at times along southern coasts. Another mild day with highs of 10C to 14C.”

The weekend is looking to be unsettled for the most part, with rain or showers at times and some blistery winds possible in the south.

Some showers may turn heavy and possibly thundery at times, with temperatures to stay high at 14C or 15C.

NEXT WEEK

Next week is looking to be a lot different than the conditions experienced this week.

“Changeable” conditions will make an appearance as a band of low pressure pushes in.

Met Eireann said: “Weather conditions are predicted to turn more changeable towards the middle of March with areas of low pressure pushing in from the Atlantic at times.

“It looks set to remain milder than average, with mean air temperatures forecast to be above normal nationwide during the week.

“Rainfall totals will increase on the preceding week but are expected to be near or slightly below the climatological average.”
