Hollywood wasn’t always big on boundaries, and one Marvel star took things way too far. Back in the day, Kim Basinger found herself in a scene that went off-script, and not in a good way. The incident left her physically scarred and shook her to the core.

Had that happened today, the backlash would’ve been nuclear. But back then, it barely made waves.
A role in 9 ½ Weeks that left a mark on Kim Basinger – literally and emotionally

Kim Basinger walked away from 9 ½ Weeks with more than just a career boost; she left with a literal scar. The 1986 erotic drama, co-starring Mickey Rourke (who played Whiplash in Iron Man 2), wasn’t just steamy on screen. Behind the scenes, stuff got way too real.
The actress later revealed that filming a rain-drenched stairway s*x scene in Manhattan left her physically injured, with a lasting mark on her forearm. Describing the brutal conditions, she called it horrid. Rusty bricks, harsh elements – her body felt it. She said (via Best Life Online),
It was horrid, up against that brick where there were rusty things going into my back. I still have a scar.
But the physical toll was just part of the nightmare. Emotionally, 9 ½ Weeks pushed her to the edge. Director Adrian Lyne and Rourke admitted they manipulated Basinger throughout filming, aiming for raw, unscripted reactions. The result was a haunting experience that stayed with her long after the cameras stopped rolling. She admitted,
After that movie was over, I didn’t want to see anybody I had ever seen on that set. If I ran into the guy who brought the coffee, I was going to kill him.
The U.S. box office didn’t love 9 ½ Weeks, but it became a cult hit overseas. Basinger, though, moved on to bigger roles – playing Vicki Vale in Batman (1989) and winning an Oscar for L.A. Confidential (1997). As for Rourke, she didn’t see him again for decades, until they reunited in Black November (2012).
Time may have healed old wounds, but the scars never really fade.
Alec Baldwin reflects on divorce with Kim Basinger, regrets its impact on daughter Ireland

Alec Baldwin has one big regret: how his divorce from Kim Basinger affected their daughter, Ireland. The messy split and drawn-out custody battle left lasting scars. The media was having a party about everything, he stated, adding that the whole ordeal stretched on for seven years.
But what haunted him most? How Ireland got caught in the middle.
Baldwin and Basinger, married from 1993 to 2002, had their share of public drama, including that infamous voicemail that temporarily cost Baldwin visitation rights.
In 2022, Basinger called the divorce “heavy-duty”, admitting co-parenting wasn’t easy. Though they rarely spend holidays together, she shared,
Alec and I have a great relationship. I have great respect for where he is today and his family. We don’t spend Christmases and holidays or see each other very much. But we talk. He’ll pick up the phone and call me, and we have a very genuinely cordial and, I think, loving relationship in a lot of ways, just because we share a daughter, and I don’t wish him anything but everything good.
Baldwin mentioned he and Ireland are in a good place. She also shares a sweet bond with his seven kids (three daughter Carmen Gabriela, Maria Lucia Victoria, and Ilaria Catalina Irena, and four sons Rafael Thomas, Leonardo Angel Charles, Romeo Alejandro David and Eduardo “Edu” Pao Lucas) from his marriage to Hilaria.
Again, time may not heal all wounds, but it certainly softens them.
9 ½ Weeks is available to watch on Prime Video & Apple TV.
